The Trailer For Liz Phair's Film About Guyville
If the bonus tracks, the new liner notes, or your general love for early '90s nostalgia aren't enough for you to put down for the 15th Anniversary re-release of Exile In Guyville, maybe an hour's worth of Liz talking to cool guys about Guyville on location in studios and rooms with bongs will do it. It's called Guyville Redux, it's a look at working through the guy-dominated Chicago indie scene of the time, and it's included in the re-release package. Liz produced and directed the 60 minute sort-of-documentary, because she is feeling creative again, and kudos to her: having Steve Albini say "You had become exactly precisely, what we hated all along" makes for promising viewing. Here's a trailer, which features interviews with the aforementioned Albini, Exile producer Brad Wood, Chicago roots guys John Cusack and Ira Glass (a former Northwestern student), Matador's Gerard Cosloy, and Urge Overkill's Nash Kato. Oh and an intro from ATO honcho Dave Matthews, supervising the project and making sure Liz is cutting the corners of her loose ends, loose ends.
So it's that, the CD, the Alan Light-penned liner notes, the unreleased Guyville session tracks "Ant in Alaska," "Wild Thing," "Say You," and an untitled instrumental, all of which can be yours when the Exile In Guyville reissue is out 6/24 via D. Matthews' ATO label.

Yeah, that's Gerard. He's unmistakable (glasses, seated in the zebra-printed room). I know Chris is in the DVD but I don't know what he looks like so he didn't get a namecheck (sorry Chris).

I think it's kinda weird how they sent her out to talk about the importance of the record - what, they couldn't find someone else to carry the torch for her?
And also, Cusack is definitely making his move. It's all about the water bottle.

Anybody else think its weird she went around asking people to say great things about that album.....while she was sitting there across from them?? I mean, what else are they gonna say, "I think its an alright record, really."?

hate that i know this, but chris lombardi is the guy with the creepy-ish mustache.
i definitely agree that it's a little weird that she's the one soliciting the accolades...but it also looks very conversational and entertaining too. while it looks like everyone has ultimately positive things to say, looks like more many of these guys the delivery will be more interesting than mere ass-kissing.

There has to be a name for these people who had big success with one or two songs, then wandered around tryin' new stuff on, mannn, for awhile, then decide to revisit the big successes and run it one more time. And previously unaware kids are actually buying it. Think Alanis with her "You Oughta Know" unplugged. Liz with this dreck. Maroon 5 putting out that thing congratulating themselves on their classic album, like 3 or 4 years after it was released? something like that
