The Flaming Lips Bring "Watching The Planets" To Conan

thumbnail icon: The Flaming Lips Bring "Watching The Planets" To Conan

The Flaming Lips have already done Colbert in support of their recently released, return-to-freak LP Embryonic, but there's something particularly amusing about seeing the Coyne company bring the gong-banging soundtrack to a bad-acid flashback "Watching The Planets"' to NBC's 11:30 time slot. But then again, the network's viewers were just slogging through the 10PM-slot mindfuck of passing off Jay Leno as "comedy," which is even trippier. Wayne's collapse in a put-on '60s psych stupor at song's end being immediately succeeded by Conan's sunny salutation is fun, but not as much as the juxtaposition of this performance being followed by the Tonight Show Band's goofy funtimes theme song.

(via TMS)

Embryonic is out, and furry. Tomorrow (10/15) in Los Angeles, there will be a one-time only Flaming Lips pop-up store at at the Nike / Ricardo Montalban Theater, located at 1615 Vine St. in Hollywood. They'll have tons of weird Lips goodies, and the band will play a MySpace secret show which promises some surprises. Hmm.

Yeah, that's pretty crazy...if you are twelve years old.

Just post the video and spare us your predictable, overwrought commentary. "mindfuck"...hahaha.

pretty sure the mindfuck comment was referring to the jay leno show. besides, i'm sure the minds of all the middle aged tourists in the audience were pretty fucked by the end of this song.

how boring a place the web would be if everyone did as you suggested. this is a blog. please stop reading blogs and just search youtube if you want to watch videos. also, i'm sure that your band is much 'crazier' and targets an older demographic. let us know when you're scheduled to appear on Conan so that we can make snarky web comments.

yep. terrible performance; cool album (Ican't say anything beyond 'cool' at this point because I've only listned to it 1.5 times)

The best part is at the way end when Conan asks Wayne and then hits the giant gong himself

Lets face it, Wayne and Co. are at the end of their rope. Heard the new album and was just not fazed by it at all anymore. Hey Wayne...Game Over.

I have no clue what any of you watched with this clip or listened to with this album - both are pretty damn good. But I'm sure I'll called out for being an "idiot" because that's how we debate music now. *sigh*

The bass line in this song reminds me a lot of Silver Apples' "Program". It's less noticeable in this clip than it is on the album. Embryonic is superb though. I'm really tempted to splurge for that furry packaging.

who's playing guitar?

The guitarist is one Mr. Derek Brown, the Lips' sideman since the Pitchfork Festival. He and his wife Raechel play in an excellent band called Crocodile- there's more info on him (and them) at http://www.crocodileforever.blogspot.com

First time I've ever seen the bass player stand up and play. It's been a while since I've seen them though. I've only listened to the album three times and nothing jumped out as a single so I'm glad the Lips figured out what would pass as one. I don't mean that in a bad way. I think the album is pretty spectacular.

Derek's on Wayne's right, behind Drozd. That may be Dennis on Ivins' side of the stage, but I'm not sure.

Good music, the ego brings it down a bit though.....still enjoy their music.

People calling others "haters" can sometimes boarder on the same idiotic generalizations that said "haters" may be pulling their comments from.
In other words, I'm sure theyre are plenty of people that were openminded about giving this song a chance and then decided it wasn't for them, plain and simple. I understand that going to lengths to discuss one's dislike for the music can be unnecessary, but then again- is it a whole lot different from expressing one's gleeful admiration? these forums were designed to accommodate both and well, some posts get more positive than negative, some the other way around, some not much of anything, etc.
I can say I've been a Lips fan for years, really into them since Soft Bulletin (likely before some of you posters were peeing in your OshKosh), have enjoyed their shows a bunch of times, and bla bla proving I'm a fan, bla bla.
...but seriously, this performance sucks. if you think that that sounds good, you have quite a tolerance for annoying stuff. does this mean i don't like the Flaming Lips' music now? No. But I'm honest enough with myself and others to say when bands I like do something shitty. No one's infallible. *See Hail to the Thief, with the exception of a few strong songs.
xoxo,
Osirus O'Oh

Thought it was great. Derek Brown is playing guitar on the right and the gong man is a guy named Ray, not Dennis.
