SXSW: These New Puritans Do "Elvis" @ Antone's

Hours before this performance, we met with Jack Barnett and his New Puritans on Red River St. Video camera on, mic in hand, we asked about TNP's first trip to the States (because we care). Actually they didn't give the impression it was going all that well, or maybe they just weren't impressed by what they'd seen so far of SXSW ... but whatever apathy we thought we picked up on evaporated in Antone's house of blues Wednesday night. It's not that the band loosened up -- no, they stayed tightly wound -- but there was more palpable energy coming from each of Jack's arm raises -- and more cool from each repeated line -- than we had reason to expect. Like we said earlier, the set was easily a highlight of the night, but the coiled post-punk of "Elvis" is already our song of SXSW '08. And we thought it'd be nice to bring you there.

You should have this already -- but if not ... you're welcome.

These New Puritans - "Elvis" (MP3)

Enjoy.

I interviewed them too. They weren't that into it on Day One either. It's a shame that all that energy doesn't come across all the time.

Hold up. Stereogum, I love you. But why does the blog have to get hijacked and turned into a SXSW 24-hour news service every year?

I think that those of us who really care that deeply about SXSW would have gone and would be there right now.

You're probably right. Either way, this blog is a snooze-fest right now, when's SXSW over?

they were probably jet-lagged from traveling? (reason for their mood perhaps) who knows, but i still wish i were there to see them...

Seriously, no one gives a fuck about SXSW. It's nice that all the underpaid drones in the music industry get to take this one almost-vacation a year, but no one else cares about the Bands to Watch whose greatest future achievement might be to get named a Band to Watch in Rolling Stone in 2 years time.

Next year, just put up a post that says 'Gone Fishing' and some funny cat pictures and leave it at that.

I think that SXSW gets a little ridiculous. But I think its a great way to get indie bands out there. If you are an unsigned band or signed to an indie label this is one festival that could help your career. These New Puritans did an interview there that wasnt that bad. People should check them out.
