Three Tunes From Our Love To Admire

If last week's rock tease still has you feeling ... blue, you should find this considerably more climactic. Won't be able to admire the full record for a few weeks yet, but here are three tracks from the LP that won't prematurely fizzle before completion. First up is "Rest My Chemistry"...

Wildlife photo stills, "All Fired Up," and "Scale" after the jump.

"All Fired Up"

Yeah, to be honest these three songs seem sort of flat and uninspired to me.. The Scale is okay, Rest My Chemistry has a promising intro and then doesn't really deliver after that, and All Fired Up is possibly the worst song I've heard by them.. The one that's streaming on Pitchfork right now (Pioneer To The Falls) is the only new track of theirs I've so far heard that I think is really up to the standards of their better stuff.

I have to agree with Evan on this one. These songs sound flushed right out of Antics. The live material is much better than these and let's just hope that there are only three skipable tracks in order to admire.

y'all are trippin. the first song is bangin. is much more of a throwback to turn on the bright lights, which is where we want them to go. 2nd one is a little too compressed in a prozac kind of way, struggling to sound 'fired up', but the arrangement is pretty. The third one again is similarly stifled, but it's heavy, heavy like zone-out-on-a-sofa-for-3-weeks-with-18-bottles-of-wine heavy - again, this is what we signed up for by liking these guys - this would work well with certain kinds of visuals, movies scenes etc. Overall, I hope the rest turns out better, but you guys were a little harsh LOL.

I agree with rocko. $10 bucks says you guys had these negative comments locked and loaded on your word document, itching to paste them on this mofo. It's Interpol. What did you expect, Belle and freaking Sebastian? I'm sure Interpol is taking notes of your poignant critiques and making sure to tweak the final mix before the final release......LMAO.

Yawn...There's a reason Joy Division only released two albums. I was bored after hearing the first chorus of 'Rest My Chemistry'. 'All Fired Up' did the just the opposite. Hopefully the rest of this is record is better. At this point I would rather listen to the new Editors record.

Yawn :O,

"I would rather listen to the new Editors record."

I'll refrain from making fun of that statement (because god knows you deserve whatever anyone can come up with for even uttering that fact).

And even if Joy Division did help to "invent" this genre, Interpol has stated on many occasions that they have never been directly influenced by Joy Division's music. So stop projecting influences on the band that they don't actually have!

As for the music, all that matters is that your work is consistently good and better than the rest. Interpol is best of the post-punk revivalist bands, and, quite frankly, I'd rather listen to anything Interpol releases than those Joy Division or Editors albums you mentioned.

the reason joy division made only 2 studio albums is because ian killed himself.
duh.
new order's "movement" was supposed to be their third. shows what you know:::::::
and to believe that theyre not influenced by joy division in any way is just plain freeeeekin' ridiculous! hilarious even!??!?1
i wish it was good- amazing even!
but its not.
and i am disappointed.

Ive listened to the 5 tracks and I can see all of them fitting on an album perfectly well. Pioneer to the falls is a very good opener to what is going to be a solid 3rd effort.

fuck Editors btw.

alphabets,

Who the fuck are you to say what a musician's influences are (especially after they went to great lengths to say that Joy Division is not one of them and clearly an afterthought)? Do you have this ridiculous musical-influence-ESP-meter built into your brain? No, didn't think so! To assume that you know how someone else's art is derived, just because you can't wrap that pea brain of yours around anything but Joy Division, makes you sound like an idiot!

everyone is ready to hate, but the arrangements are clever. its not drab or shit, its catchier than it was before and whats wrong with that? they are expanding the sonic world they created in totbl, just like with antics. im intrigued for sure, and to be honest all i wanted was some interesting work. doesn't sound like they slapped it together, so i approve.

These songs are pretty underwhelming; but at the same time, I'm starting to feel sort of bad for bands putting out their second or third albums. Unless it's earth-shattering (which it rarely is), they don't stand a chance. It kind of takes the fun out of it, for the band and for the fans.

Ju Bean...let me interject here. Come on. Even if they have said that they are not influenced by Joy Division directly, does that make it so? They are musicians, not prophets. Everything they say is not fact. They might be claiming not to be influenced by Joy division because they want to separate themselves, which is understandable. But the similarities are uncanny, which so many others have pointed out.

How about listening to it more than once before passing the BIG JUDGEMENT?

How about that?

Maybe the album's a grower. Some are like that, ya know? Antics took a little bit of time, but ended up loving it.

Stop being such 'it's-cool-to-hate-Interpol' fags.

Evan,

"They are musicians, not prophets. Everything they say is not fact."

...now I don't know about you, but I can't think of a single artist on Earth who doesn't know what inspires them to create. Granted, they may not know where the inspiration is coming from (and this, I would assume, plays into people who believe Jesus is responsible for every creative espousal they've ever had), but they do know what it is. In fact, the recognition of your inspiration is one of the cornerstones of the creative process.

All of this is to say, that despite the similarities to Joy Division you may recognize, that doesn't mean they are lying about their influences. I don't know what it is about music fans like you, but you're always trying to root-out some sort of conspiratorial theory by over-thinking every utterance a musician makes. Because, for all of the supposed distancing from their influences, they haven't strayed away from My Bloody Valentine or the Pixies.

Comparisons add up to a heap of dog shit these days (i.e., the reports I read last year describing The Cold War Kids as having "a heavy Strokes influence"). People need to stop looking for similarities between artists, and stop trying to compartmentalize every section of the music industry. Sure, I use genres for descriptive purposes, just like anyone else, but I'd rather take each artist on an individual basis and judge their work on its own merits. For me that means Joy Division is Joy Division and Interpol is Interpol, and they don't have anything to do with one another.

But I will concede, there are only so many basic musical concepts you can mine before you take too many liberties and stumble into the territories of gross experimentalism and the wholly unpalatable. So, I can't say that the bands don't sound similar, but that doesn't mean that the members of Interpol sat down one day and just said to themselves, "Joy Division, that's it! Everything we do has to sound like Joy Division!" And as a clear difference, Interpol are toying with an expanding sonic palate that just isn't present in Joy Division's music. So, just the way Muse has grown into their own sound (after three albums of being deemed Radiohead ripoffs), Interpol may stumble onto something that sounds less like Joy Division (even though the similarity isn't intensional to begin with).

I find it tragic when you have hundreds of would be "music blogs" gushing about the latest record from a band on "Capital Records". Talk about not contributing anything of value to the international music world. I say let the labels (IE people that should probably consider changing careers soon) work their own albums through publicists, but let blogs actually be about "discovering and nurturing new music". That would be the ideal worth aspiring too in my opinion. :)

What's even more tragic are people like Deb and Colin, who would rather bitch about a blog's content, than taking the proactive approach and starting their own blogs. Why don't you two hook up so you can "contribute something of value to the international music world" in all of its bastardized, web-efficient glory! That is, since they seem to think that running a site like Stereogum, while trying to keep your finger on the pulse of modern music is such an easy thing to do.

I beseech you both - get over yourselves!

'chemistry' sounds good at first listen. 'scale' seems like a grower, but 'fired up' is boring and horrible...yes, horrible. nevertheless, it all sounds the same and i agree with the person above who says that it's really hard for bands at the point of album 3 in their career. as much as i absolutely adore the pixies, i was only able to really listen up to album 4. look at the strokes...great first album, second album got them even more popular, and now everything keeps sounding the same.

you guys who talk about 'opening your minds' and not being so one-sided should give the Editors LP a listen, the first 4 tracks or so are all strong tracks worth listening to. it's just music, right? and if you can listen to something and enjoy it, then why not?

moustaches are dumb and will fall by the wayside just like every other stupid trend that tries to get re-hashed because of its previous corny-ness. should we all start wearing the short basketball shorts from the 70's again?

Wait, if I like Interpol's new album, I am member of the flock. Ba, ba...

Wait, I am now unable to like a band who I discovered one night at Brownies back in the day and instantly fell in love the with their sound and loyally have followed their career over the years. Oh yeah, they signed to a big label.

So uncool, so tragic.. God maybe I should go back to smoking my clove cigarettes and reading Satre like I did when i was 14 years old, hating everything that could be deemed as mainstream or selling out.

So what if they signed to Capitol? Does mean they are less artistic in their delivery now? Artists are only real if they struggle and maintain their underground cred.

No... It just means they can eat better, worry less about what will happen next year and maybe invest in their future of making music. Stress kills creativity.

All I know is they have worked hard over the years. Touring for the last album almost killed them. They spent the first half of the year working date and night on the new album. They quit drinking and going out to focus their energy on creating this album.

Reaping rewards for ones hardwork and dedication is not tragic but an ideal that we embrace...

You know that I'm right, so I'll take the personal insults as a sign of how pathetic you actually are. Only people with nothing of validity to add to a conversation attack others with personal insults - you are so transparent. Who the fuck are you anyway? And why are you criticizing me for talking about Interpol on an Interpol thread? What the fuck did you expect people to be talking about, Harry Potter? I happen to be one of Interpol's oldest fans, and I'm just engaging in an intelligent dialog about the music industry. If you don't agree with me, fine, but don't try to debase me with that infantile tripe.

Hey does it bother anyone else in nyc that so far on their tour they have virtually ignored the city that begat them? Oh wait; that's right, ONE night at bowery. A lot of what follows echoes the sentiments of Ju Bean, who I believe to be totally spot on.

In light of the recent leaks of new Interpol material, a particular pet hate of mine in the world of music has bitten back with a terrible vengeance, and that is; the compulsion of some listeners and critics alike to make inane, deeply smug and ill-informed comparisons between bands.

It has always made me fume when I've played some music, any music, I've liked to someone and, after 30 seconds they smirk and then say "aaaah... Bob Dylan/The Smiths/The Cure/Prince/Joy Division" as if they've deconstructed the essence of what I'm listening to and triumphantly invalidated it by making some ridiculous comparison.

Likewise, critics (and normal people) wheel out the same old shit everytime Interpol come out with anything new. Joy Division this-Joy Division that. It would make me laugh if it didn't make me so angry. Comparisons are so lazy and counterproductive. And you can bet that the majority of those who compare the two have never even listened to the two studio albums Joy Division made (anyone who has, and who also has a functioning brain would recognise two separate musical identities, both brilliant imho). Yes they both have guitars and a meodically inclined bass-player, and yes neither band were/are especially happy-go-lucky - so fucking what??? Celebrate the differences! The sonic invention of both bands!

Most importantly get a fucking life and realise that (to use a maxim preferred by the legendary Steely Dan) THOSE WHO CAN DO, THOSE WHO CAN'T REVIEW!!

This is disappointing, especially since they're my favorite band. If this were any other band, I would be alright with it because the music isn't bad, but I hold Interpol to much higher standards. You really have to listen to this album multiple times for it to sink in how good it is. There was another album I had to that with called "Pinkerton". Well you now see how worshiped that album has become. I like the new direction. While I doubt my love for this album will reach that of "Turn On the Bright Lights", all in all it is a solid album that steers Interpol in a new and even more promising direction.
