SXSW: Tori Amos Debuts Three From Abnormally Attracted To Sin
Tori Amos played a 50 minute set at La Zona Rosa last night, delighting hundreds of folks who recognize a rare opportunity to see a milf straddle a piano bench during SXSW. It was Tori's first time taking part in the Austin festival, and she made the most of it by debuting three tunes from her forthcoming tenth LP Abnormally Attracted To Sin. The set was introduced by famed music blogger Perez Hilton, who revealed that Little Earthquakes made him the man he is today. Thanks for that, Little Earthquakes. As for the new material, Tori described "Mary Jane" as a true story about a boy who wanted permission from his mom to smoke up. "Lady In Blue" and "Curtain Call" sound prettier and more promising. this album will be killer because tori's one of the last artists left. sure, she's an acquired taste and since listening to her requires a little thought, lots of people like to shit on her. of course, the scenesters that do always forget she's been going strong and selling out shows since '91, or, about 18 years longer than whatever flash-pan electro act said scenesters like to listen to because they've read that's whose hot this week.

I agree with you Jeremy. I have adores Tori for years, and when you do actually listen to both the compisition of her music and how she marries these amazing lyrics and stories with that music...how can anyone not appreciate it? Even if they don't completely understand the concept? I guess though, you are correct there also, not many people look beyond the surface. I always found it so misleading, I need to see deeper than that. I want to be moved and she will move you, espicially live, and she will make you think really deep, if you pay attention. :)

The funny part is people who listen to Tori Amos have an artist that produces new quality works in volume. Anybody who knocks her style needs to look into their own music collection and ask themselves if they'll still be listening to that crap in another 10 years. I bet a ton will say well, "I listen to Led Zeppelin so I have taste." It's highly laughable, you can listen to great classics and still have awful tastes in music. It's funny how people who knock fans of other artists never say what music they listen to. I listen to a diverse mix of music, you can find The RZA, Kaki King, Tori Amos, Loreena McKinnet, Chopin, Sarah MacLachlan, Chopin, on just the surface of my music collection. I've chosen Tori Amos as my sonic entree, everyone else is just hors'dourves. It's like people who listen to contemporary country music, which is basically redneck pop, and have the nerve to judge me for who I jam to or rap for that matter. 90% of music is cookie cutter. Thank God for Tori Amos. Without her, my musical palette would be very bland.

you said it perfectly--I also have a broad range of musical tastes. I have a very small few that I listen to all the time (Tori, Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson), but I have (yes, I counted), including the few consistent favorite artists, 1,756 mp3s which include people like Ray Lynch, Gorillaz, Patrick O'Hearn, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, the Cruxshadows, TLC, Michael Jackson, Sublime, DJ Shadow, Tom Petty, Shakira, They Might Be Giants, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Outkast, Green Day, local bands, music made by my friends, and so on and on and on. music is a big part of my life, and I am ALWAYS seeking to find more that I might enjoy.
and Tori alone is a very diverse musician, especially for a woman who can't do more than sing and play the piano (as opposed to being multifaceted on instruments like Trent Reznor or Prince). the talent that she has (which is immense) is not just in singing and playing well, but in using that ability to give us something, every time, that doesn't sound like the same thing over and over and over.

well.. i'm really surprised that this album looks quite promising considering what she gave us the last two times (the beekeeper was something that needed to be edited but in the end turned out just fine)
will i buy the album? yes
will i like it? yes
will it be as good as her 90's stuff? no.... BUT! she always excites me. and there are always a few gems on her records even though sometimes it makes me sad to have to sift through crap like "posse bonus" "you can bring your dog" and "hoochie women" (not her best side) but i always of coarse love her...

I do like her new album! Tori makes love to the piano and her lyrics are very aquired. Some songs on Abnormally attracted to Sin could have been edited, though. The style reminded me a little of Strange Little Girls.
Anyway, her latest album is one of the most sinister and sensual ones she's made.
I will be at her concert in London -grabbed one of the last tickets!!! YAY! :D
