U2 Get On The Roof, Plan Secret Bronx Gig

thubmnail icon: U2 Get On The Roof, Plan Secret Bronx Gig

Two surprising bits of info in today's NYTimes profile of U2's No Line On The Horizon: (1) At 149 BPM "Get On Your Boots" is U2's fastest song ever, and (2) the band is prepping a "meditative and processional" companion album by year end. Slow down, U2! No Line isn't even done leaking yet. A stadium tour is on the horizon, too, but first they take Manhattan with five Late Night gigs and a Friday AM performance on the steps of Fordham University's Keating Hall that will allegedly air on Good Morning America. The Letterman stint starts Monday, and will probably look and sound like last night's Jonathan Ross show where they did "Breathe" and "GOYB."

In our Premature Evaluation of NLOTH we said "Breathe" was one of the speedier rockers that actually works. We also liked catchy, mid-tempo rocker "Magnificent." U2 played it (along with "GOYB," "Vertigo" and "Beautiful Day") on the roof of the BBC yesterday.

Brings back memories.

No Line On The Horizon is out Tuesday on Interscope.

Lil' bit late to the bash Get On Your Boots party, Travis. The correct songs to use to criticize are Pump It Up and Wild Wild West. But that was covered weeks ago.

Stereogum, why keep posting U2 bits when all the unhappy people who love to comment on your site obviously hate the band. Watching folks gorge on rage is fucking ugly. Especially when they're all about hating a band that has made genuinely great music in the past like U2 instead of, in the words of Sinead, "the real enemy." Insert manufactured pop here.

Thanks to Martin for showing us what a typical asshole likes to post on Stereogum. I have a feeling you're a lil' disappointed in the way your life turned out.

I liked Bono before he was wrinkly and terrified the very core of my being.

The Bono is an odd case. He sings and dances and sews and mends. The last cape he wore was fear, and a cassette tape lights up with twice a candle. Not less than a hundred men have followed lightning into the Bay of Fundy. Cash or not, split the shot, talent spot.

Wow Bono is really off key on Breathe. I think the guys have finally lost it. But they still had a longer run of relevance than any other band will ever have.

No, you are the fool - Pup is right. the Stones were not relevant after Tattoo You in 1981, when the band members were in their late 30s. Like them or not, U2 has remained relevant this decade well into their 40's.

Anyone over 30 is a total loser and completely incapable of being relevent. Fuck Pup! And you too.

To say that U2 was relevant in the first part of this decade may be an overstatement. They may have had some popularity, but as far as socially relevant music they fell off in the 90's. And if you are making the case that popularity is relevance than you are on the wrong website.

U2 are one of the greatest and most innovative Rock bands ever ... can't really even argue that. Achtung Baby! and Joshua Tree were completely unique, as was that album they did with Brian Eno, Passengers or something. Gotta love guys staying creative and making great music well into their 40s ...

Name a band nearly as relevant even after a decade or four albums ...

I haven't read this story nor do I intend to so this comment is completely unrelated to the topic at hand. Bono is a self-righteous bastard who thinks he is "the shit." Sure he does humanitarian acts but you can't clear the stench of a douchebag.

Bono and U2 are post-relevant. They don't actually have to be a part of the world anymore, but only have to drop an album every so often and wait for the fanbase to buy. They're the blockbuster movie every critic is going to crap on but is going to be #1 at the box office anyway, deserving or not. While No Line On The Horizon isn't a great album, it's okay. It's a pastiche of everything they've ever done.

when kanye finds out that Bono stole his haircut, he's gonna be sooooo pissed.

also, U2 haven't been relevant since Ach, and Joshua tree etc... Fact is, they just keep making music that sounds the same(insert mariah carey comparison here). it's not got any better or evolved to anything great. If anyone here(or anywhere else for that matter) can say that their favorite U2 record was in this decade, or maybe even the previous decade, then it might show a shred of relevance, but even still, that shred of relevance and the slight shred of credibility that would give them would easily be overshadowed by Bono's self-righteous "save the earth", "save the children", "save everyone", "buy my album", mentality.
