U2's "Wave Of Sorrow" Premieres On Facebook

Chart topping, Grammy-winning The Joshua Tree hit stores twenty years (and eight months) ago and twenty million sales later, U2's got a bunch of deluxe editions in time for Christmas. There's a remastered CD, double 12", deluxe remastered CD with bonus disc of b-sides and demos, and 2-CD + DVD box. Even casual U2 fans like us have heard several of the rarities, but perhaps not "Wave Of Sorrow." That's the delicate, Langston Hughes-inspired outtake Bono's debuted on iLike, the social networking music platform backed by his VC friends. Here the singer live vlogs the tune; if you can imagine it without the yammering, you'll probably like!

Isn't this where some snarky "indie" kid makes a Bono joke?

I think Bono as a joke kind of makes itself nowadays.

i liked the song. and i think that watching Bono explain the lyric here in an intimate setting, as opposed to a stadium stage, tells you how genuine his sentiment really is.

Bono occasionally loses himself in rock & roll grandeur, but he really does know how to sell a song. Kudos to Stereogum for posting this and not being afraid of a hipster backlash.

i don't see why people always talk shit about U2. they've put out consistently good to great material for 25-30 years. they were and still are a great band.

I agree with juano. Great band that for the most part turns out great material. They've definitely had some missteps (Pop is a big one) but I have to cut them some slack given they've been around for 30 years. And whether the fickle indie kids like it or not, U2 is an influence on a lot of the current indie faves.

I'm with Juano.

I only wish that I could be a snarky joke for pimply dropout record-store clerks because of my enduring talent, humanitarianism, and passion for other human beings.

It's easy to make fun of someone who stands by his beliefs. It's a lot harder to stand by your own.

Good one daver. Might I add:

It's nice to see a positive U2 post with positive comments, for once. I don't understand why people like to shit all over them, Bono especially. They're a tight, talented band who has put out some brilliant music over the years. Bono is certainly a good showman, but he's sincere.

I'd recommend the book "Bono On Bono" or "Conversations With Bono," or some title like that. I can't remember what the US title was. He clearly means what he says, and he knows he's not perfect. I think he's quite admirable, generally.

And his songwriting is still great (see "Sometimes you can't make it on your own").
And his voice is still great (see their "Live in Italy" performance when he belts out Pavarotti's part on "Miss Sarajevo").

I got to 4:44 before wanting to strangle him. I admit his (older) songwriting and lyrics and his efforts on the humanitarian front. I wish he could have just done an intro to the song and then played it.

That video is the best of astroturfing and on facebook too. Smart.

I have a theory that for a band to be considered truly great, they have to have had at least three truly great albums. I'd say that their run of Joshua Tree to Zooropa at the very least qualifies that.

This video was NOT premiered on facebook. It was up on @u2 at least a few days before it hit the facebookery.
