Vivian Girls Air Their LaundroMatinee

thumbnail icon: Vivian Girls Air Their LaundroMatinee

Yes, Blooming Onion-Gate ended up being one of our most discussed posts in 2008, but before that mess, we were busy debuting their songs and trying to tell the world (sorry) that with their update on classic C86 (plus early Slumberland) and Spectored three-part harmonies, Vivian Girls were a band worth checking out. Of course, they still are -- their debut is a good one. All that said, the trio stopped by the Laundromatinee's "VIBES II performance space" and performed four songs, two previously heard ("Tell The World" and "Wild Eyes") and two (at the time) new. Judging from the summer wear and a quick Google refresher, the recording took place in August and MP3s of the tracks have been floating around since then, but the video footage is just going live now, so let's forget about the past.

"Surfing Away"

"I Have No Fun"

You can see the two album tracks at LaundroMatinee and the three gals in that Fucked Up video I posted an hour ago. They're also playing with FU and Pissed Jeans at Market Hotel on 1/20. More dates at their MySpace.

Just because their are hot girls does not mean their music is good!

Really, only one of them is hot - and only sort of hot at that.

im not gonna lie, i dig this group but i do feel a step up in a label or recording studio/producer will really ruin these girls... they rely so much on that reverb imo. they write catch quick little songs but they could take a step in the wrong direction with their hype

And they will. A misstep is inevitable...

It is satisfying to finally listen to these bums and find that not only are they total assholes, they also make terrible music. What exactly is it that you see in them, Stereogum?

I mean seriously.....they might make decent recording but I've heard better high school bands live.

Good lord, this is horrible. Why do singers think they don't have to practice? I'm not saying a person has to be amazing, but maybe try thinking about running through a scale or two before jumping onstage and subjecting everyone to your mediocrity. Lazy assholes.

Absolute 100% garbage for mindless scenesters. This is some sub-high school bullshit. I'm sure they're sweethearts, but watching this and reading endless comparisons to the C86/Sarah records crowd makes me really angry. Sure those bands (Black Tambourine, Throw Aggi Off the Bridge, Shop Assistants, Blueboy, etc) weren't prodigies, but they played with some energy and passion...and could actually play their instruments. Think of the hundreds of bands in mid-sized American cities that would blow these jokers away...motherfuck Brooklyn

I think that is a large enough sum of anti-Vivian Girls commentary to ban them from being posted about on Stereogum in the future... Right, Brandon?

Oh Sweet Jesus. I didn't think I could like them any less, but now I know it's possible. Someone burn Williamsburg to the ground if it can prevent more of this shit. *shudder*

They are a joke. I can't believe this soulless garbage is held up as anything worthwhile.
