Weezer Visit Letterman, Yo Gabba Gabba!
While searching for a clip of Weezer's stop by Letterman last night, I came across a vid of their first ever stop by Dave's place. They played "Say It Ain't So" and I sighed. Whatever you think of the band all these years later, this much is undeniable: they are still making music. And doing television appearances. Last night they did If You're Wondering If I Want You To (I Want You To)," a (the?) strong point on Raditude, and tonight they're back at the Ed Sullivan Theatre for another serving. It's a strong performance, the Late Show band bolstering Rivers' stage-walking with some nice brass arrangements, so put the Weezy bit out of your mind and enjoy:

Doesn't Rivers play guitar? Why have the drummer play rhythm and bring in a new drummer when he could have just played it?

Rivers wants be more of a frontman, so he's playing less guitar, and Pat's taken over on guitar rather than have someone else do it. Josh is a fan and a friend of the band, so he's playing drums.

Rivers is one of my favorite musician. He does a great job at rearranging songs to be performed with other groups. And he works really well with other musicians. If I ever got the chance to work with him, or even meet him, I would probably cry.

You mean the same Josh Freese who's played on albums by Avril Lavigne and Miley Cyrus? He's one of the most in-demand session drummers, credibility is the least of his worries. He could've done much worse than playing with Weezer.

FYI, Patrick Wilson is a very good guitarist. Not only is his Special Goodness stuff pretty good, he can totally shred some metal guitar. You might be able to find some clips on You Tube or on those "diary" video clips on the Weezer sites.

My thoughts exactly. This performance of this song is even better than the album version, and honestly, it makes it one of the best songs they've ever done (despite the lyrics). But the rest of the album isn't a fraction as good.

This is the only halfway decent song on Raditude. "Can't Stop Partying" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard.

Complete speculation but I wouldn't be surprised if Pat can't play as well to a click as the guy they brought in, hence moving him to guitar. Rivers looks awkward as hell without a guitar, and the song is pretty awful. Letterman's band does sound great helping out though.

Umm, no. Pat been playing flawlessly to a click track for over 15 years. The band plays stale, boring, simplistic music these days (esp. rhythmically), so they decided to mix things up during live performances. Sometimes Rivers plays drums. Sometimes Scott or Brian will sing lead.
Also, very few songs on Red or Radituda (ugh) have guitar solos, so there's no need to have Rivers' at guitar. And he says he enjoys the freedom of just singing (although most of the time it comes off as drunk karaoke).
