Weezer's Seventh Album, A Million Other Things On The Way

thubmnail icon: Weezer's Seventh Album, A Million Other Things On The Way

Lots to report from camp Weezer. (Thank for the multi-faceted tip, Tony.) First of all, the band's working on their seventh, currently untitled album. As Weezer themselves tell us:

The bands 7th album, title TBA, is pretty close to a wrap now (after a mild false alarm back in the spring), though there is some work yet remaining to be done. There have also been some other special weezer studio recordings done recently, but more on that later.

The above photo is visual proof. On top of that, there'll be a Pinkerton Deluxe Edition out if "all goes as planned" and "a to-be-announced special non-physical release." While you wait, there's the Weezer 8-bit tribute and some Sugar Ray-related actions. Sugar Ray, you say? Yes:

Upcoming new Sugar Ray album "Music For Cougars" includes their cover of a song recorded but never released by Weezer, "Love Is The Answer". The original Weezer version of the song remains in the Make Believe era vaults, but now Sugar Ray's version will be available as of July 21, when their album drops.

Here it is, with Rivers contributing inspirational spoken word:

If that cover didn't work for you, download the aforementioned Weezer - The 8-bit Album. While you listen, check out the news in even more detail at weezer.com (which is also where you'll find the above photo).

The 8-bit album is great, it makes me enjoy songs like We Are All On Drugs much more, and the fact that is has some stuff from Songs from the Black Hole is great.

Of course it doesn't take long to wrap up a new album when you have dedicated yourselves to putting out utter crap, as Weezer obviously has. meh.

I feel like I just recovered from the shit stom all over the internet from Weezer's last release. Now I'm already about to have to suffer through another one.

I can't wait for their new single, "Heart Films," followed by "Heart TV Shows."

Love that Sugar Ray cover, some great guitar work there. Makes you wonder why Weezer themselves haven't released it. Actually I wouldn't mind hearing more new Weezer songs in that vein.

Weezer should have stopped after Pinkerton. Actually, The Green Album and Maladroit were OK but the last two are terrible. I'll be picking up the reissue though, looking forward to that.

I guess Weezer inadvertently brought all the post-Pinkerton (mostly) hate on themselves by setting the bar so frickin' high with their first two albums. But on the other hand, I think each of their post-Pinkerton albums has its share of great songs. There aren't many bands outside Radiohead that can maintain such a high level of quality on a consistent basis per album, and I think it's OK if Weezer can't ever match those old highs, especially if they can still give us a decent tune or two on each new album. Their worst stuff is still better than most other bands' output.

When you dedicate yourself to making music within a formula, as Weezer have admitted they do, then I think you're setting yourself up to release sub-par albums. I would agree that their newer albums still have a couple of good songs, but there are tons of bands out there currently making much more interesting sounds than Weezer.

so what you're saying is that the only weezer news actually worth reporting is the pinkerton deluxe?

How about Weezer just starts releasing the stacks and stacks of demos they have from when they were good so we can all just pretend it's there new stuff and is as good as ever so we don't have to suffer through... "I'm your daddy". I didn't know Rivers was Michael Cera mixed with every hipster douche at my High School. Huh.
