When Arcade Fire Say "No," Snow Patrol Says "Yes!"
Monday night marked the series premiere of NBC's great dramatic hope for a workable Studio 60 replacement, The Black Donnellys. Anybody watch? We didn't either. But Heroes, which was on right before it, is on fire.
And speaking of Fire (segue!), when the Donnellys pilot leaked a while back, it featured "Rebellion (Lies)" in the episode's closing sequence. We don't have all the facts (anyone?), but a probable licensing issue led NBC to replace the song with Snow Patrol's "Open Your Eyes." Now we may not have seen the aired version, but we're gonna go ahead and say this one came out better.
For more on last-minute soundtrack switches, try this one out: Remember how we were trying to extrapolate plot significance from LOST showing the album art and liner notes for Speaking In Tongues but playing Petula Clark's "Downtown" instead? (Are The Others fucking with us?!) Answer. J.J. Abrams ain't that crafty.

uh. pointless.

I saw it. It was pretty much a cheap knock-off of Goodfellas mixed with the second season of the Wire. I did watch the whole thing though. I guess that's saying something.
Score = 0
It actually wasn't a bad show. And I agree this song works much better than the Snow Patrol one.

Yeah, I actually enjoyed this show as well. But Rebellions (Lies) would have been perferred.

i watched and really loved the pilot. the arcade version of the scene is loads better though, i was even thinking how lame snow patrol sounded the other night when i watched.

Cheap cheap knockoff. It even featured the actor who played Frank Sobotka from the Wire. Plus, exactly which part of Hell's Kitchen is this supposed to take place in? The part with no indie yuppies, no minorities, and no pedestrians? These days, walking up 10th Ave, you'd have a better chance of running into a dude wearing an Arcade Fire tshirt than a Westie thug...

"As far back as I can remember, I've always wanted to rip off mArtin Scorcese."
I downoaded the pilot for free off iTunes and I want my bandwidth back. That narrative/flashback opening killed it for me.

maybe the arcade fire has seen the pilot.

I thought the show was actually pretty good.

Yeah, I saw the pilot as well. I thought it was pretty good. Much better then Studio 60 ever was.

I watched it and I thought that it was about as good as could be expected from a mob-related network television show.
As for the song, my personal bias towards Arcade Fire aside, I though the Snow Patrol song fit better in that ending. It better reflected the fact that this character just sacrificed his life for the sake of his brother then "Rebellion (Lies)" does. "Rebellion (Lies)" almost makes it seem celebratory and badass that he's going to take over. As if, it was his wanted outcome. Which, you can tell, is not what he wanted.

The Arcade Fire is definately better than Snow Patrol in my opinion.

What the hell kind of name is Joey Ice Cream? Other than an obviously lame play on Paulie Walnuts, I mean.

Black Donnelys was awesome! I was stoked when I heard SNow Patrol!

it's certainly better than Heroes or 95% of the other crap on TV.

it will be good to watch for the 8 weeks it runs.

even with the arcade fire song, i can tell that this show is crap. thank goodness, they didn't use it in the aired version. i wouldn't want to associate this song with such crappiness.

Travis Schmeisser, are you that guy in the new VCAST commercial with the Fall Out Boy song? I don't know... You just sound so familiar!

Was it just me, or did anyone else find the syncing of the "every time you close your eyes" and the woman closing her eyes to be unintentionally hilarious?

No. nerd!

Alright, just to follow the conversation I went and downloaded the free pilot off of iTunes. Is it great? Not really. Is it incredibly terrible. Not at all. This means it falls nicely into the "Man, Im bored, what's on TV?" category. Frankly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Law and Order and CSI are both pretty stale these days and I've been looking for something new to stare at. This is most likely the TV junky in me, but oh well. I mean, broadcast TV (besides the cost of buying a TV) is free, so who's to complain. Not everything has to be LOST.
To the point though, the usage of snow patrol was meh, no argument there. After watching the aired ending and rewatched the Arcade Fire ending, and, to be honest, it felt a little clunky. Most likely we say it's better because the Arcade Fire is beloved and we use those associations to take preference, one over the other. So there are two options, "clunky Arcade Fire ending" or the "ending with the song I'm able to not pay attention to." Honestly, I'd probably take the latter.

I loved the arcade fire ending, but probably because arcade is one of my favorite bands and i don't listen to snow patrol much.
Hey, anyone else catch the bit of 'disappear' by the faint in there too?!

Ok i watched the Pilot and this one and alot of people may disagree but the Arcade fire song... didnt work like the snow patrol. A little too fast of a beat. I mean the guy was about to do something he didnt wanna do and that songs beat just didnt work. Good song, and the words worked but the beat all wrong in my view.
I really liked the show. I used to wath the Wire, kinda cool seeing ol' Frank in there.

I just rewatched the ending to both and I think the Arcade Fire song just doesnt work that smoothly... I love Arcade Fire but the Snow Patrol ending helps you understand how hard of a decision Tommy is making and he is making it simply to protect his brother. The Arcade Fire version makes you feel that Tommy is ready to take that step or even that he wants to do it, but this isnt the message that is supposed to be sent. Whether it was licensing or a directoral decision I think it was the best thing for the show

I'm going to agree with the previous comments. The Snow Patrol song was the only way to go. It was a perfect fit to the ending of one helluva show.
