Wilco (The Album) Is Wilco's New Album Title

thubmnail icon: Wilco (The Album) Is Wilco's New Album Title

Rolling Stone reports that Wilco's seventh album will be titled Wilco (The Album). If you recall, we posted "Wilco (The Song)" when they stopped by Colbert a ways back, so maybe we should've been detectives and guessed the straightforward generic branding. Nah, as RS reports, they break concept on the rest of the tracklist:

"One Wing" and "Sunny Feeling" are breezy, pop-friendly tunes; "Deeper Down" is a mellow ballad spiked with atmospherics and chamber strings; the nearly-six-minute jam "Bull Black Nova" starts with rollicking drums, stacatto keys and guitars before exploding into a killer solo from guitarist Nels Cline. Think of the it as a sonic follow-up to the kraut-rockin' "Spiders (Kidsmoke)." "That one's a really intense, powerful song," says Kotche of "Nova." "It's got a static groove that's really insistent. There's a lot of great guitar moments on that song."

One thing RS doesn't note is that "You And I" will ostensibly feature Feist. While you try imagining what all of this will sound like, why not take another look at "Wilco (The Song)," so you can sing along at Bonnaroo?

As previously menioned, Wilco (The Album) will be out via Nonesuch in June.

Weezer has yet to have the name/album/song-title self-name trifecta. But they can fix that two albums from now, when they deliver their Yellow album (it's gonna happen!)

Rock is dead. Hell...music is dead. No one can think of anything that wasn't already done 1000 times yesterday. As good as this song is, it would've sounded completely at home on The White Album 39 years ago!

Wilco = post-rehab dad-rock - good line Aaron! You too Late Greats! Ryan Adams - ha ha. Another guy who I used to like who keeps putting out boring music(more post-rehab dad-rock) . Wilco have bored me since their second album. I liked them better when they were actually fun like on their first album. Wilco concert = sausage fest.

Sausage fest indeed. Saw the band a few years back in San Diego and I had the displeasure of being surrounded by why "Summerteeth" is superior to "Sky Blue Sky" (no one was a clear winner) and guys playing "name-the-obscure-brand-of-amplifier-Nels-and-Jeff-might-use-tonight"

From what I’ve seen of live performances, it seems Jeff may think his position in the rock world a little precious. There's been a whiff of entitlement about the band for a while, and this pretentious/lame/awkward title compounds that concern. Nevertheless, I hope Wilco….(the album) is as good as YHF or GiB. *fingers crossed**breath held*

Maybe so, but he knows it. I was at a solo show once and he couldn't decide whether he wanted us to be really quiet or for us to chat and then realizing that he was being an ass said "I know I've kinda got this reputation for being a whiny bitch on stage... but I kinda like you to talk some more..." So, I think Tweedy (like Malkmus and some other 90's ear pioneers), realize they are 'precious' and how stupid that is, but also realize that if you are to be a rock star you can't be a self-effacing peon all the time.

Something to go with The Wilco Book and The Wilco Toys.

Sounds much more promising than Sky Blue Sky though I fear the Feist collaboration. As long as Nels gets to shred than I'll be happy (considering Wilco will never be the Wilco that I grew up loving--though the new tour may make me think twice about saying as much).

It ain't just you. It is one of the few albums that, after listening to the whole thing, I want to listen to again. It sounds like a band playing together, which nowadays can seem like a kooky idea. TJ Doherty did an amazing job of capturing it, too.... I dunno, it is just something special.

It really depends on where you are coming from musically. For me, YHF was the album that marked my transition from casual radio listener to rabid searcher of new sounds. Almost every musical gesture on that album was new to me: the use of drums in "..BreakyourHeart," the noise throughout, Tweedy's vocals, the range of melodies and emotional events. I was accustomed to listening to 90's mainstream rock. I can imagine that if I'd grown up listening to Pavement or the Pixies or Pink Floyd, or otherwise searching for good music, then I might not have loved Wilco. But they were completely new to me, and so I was grateful for YHF.

Mermaid Ave was good. Being There was great. Sumemrteeth was very good. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was Great. A Ghost Is Born is one of my favs...

Sky Blue Sky... eh.

Now this? Jesus Christ... I'd love to deny it, but Tweedy is about three seconds from fucking himself passionately, What is this shit? Wilco (the song) and Wilco (the album)? I think its more like Wilco (true hollywood fucking story) at this point.

Guess I'm down to two rock acts now... The National and Radiohead, and Radiohead isn't even rock anymore anyway (and they're still the shit doing what they do). We'll be able to bury rock when the last of the surviving Beatles dies.

First of all, SBS is an awesome record, period. The only people who don't like it are the people who jerk-off to all 15 minutes of "Less Than You Think" off AGiB.

Secondly, what's with the heat for the album/song title? The song is damn catchy, and the the record has the potential to be awesome. If you look hard enough you can find live performances of a handful of the new songs and they all sound great. So what if it's a little indulgent? Are you telling me Wilco/Jeff haven't earned the right to be indulgent? The guy is a fucking genius, end of discussion.

...and when you're done sucking his dick.

Genius is a big word buddy... a word used for guys like Dylan, Lennon, Young, Byrne, Yorke, and a few others. Tweedy is a great songwriter, but he lost a lot of his edge when he stopped experimenting with his sound and reverted back to folk-rock with SBS (not to say the album is all that bad, just not as great as AGiB). His lyrics are suffering too... and this new song is a perfect example of that.

BTW, I may jerk off to the entirety of "Less Than You Think", but your mother waits there patiently until I'm done... and she doesn't even like Wilco.

I'm not sure Yorke, if you're referring to Thom, really belongs in the same category as Dylan or Young... And I think Tweedy probably does moreso than Thom Yorke. Radiohead can be alot more boring than any Wilco I've heard. Just because they're boring and loud and whiny sometimes instead of boring and soft and dad-rocky (whatever that means) doesn't make them any less boring.

In an era of such self-possessed, self-absorbed and self-conscious media-facilitated wankery posing as new music, not to mention the rampant, rabid, hate-filled corporate and commercial shafting of livelihoods everywhere, I for one am quietly pleased (and fervently thankful!!) there will be another new Wilco LP - coming out in June! just as there will be other defiant examples of genuine creativity and love of music amidst such treacherous fear-soaked times. Shit - that's great in fact!! Don't freak out too much on Tweedy - he's freaked out enough as it is. He's a bandsman turned front man. Little wonder he's jumpin at ... blah blah blah. That's quite enough from me. I'm off somewhere to work a little harder and longer in order to finance another banker's performance bonus. Yes!!

Seeing how most people didn't really give two shits about Wilco before Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and still haven't heard any of their previous material, it's unsurprising, though still disappointing, that many did not take a liking to Sky Blue Sky. To be frank, I think it's the band's finest album to date. It's warm and honest and who cares if it lacks experimentalism? Sky Blue Sky concerns itself with relationships more than any other Wilco effort. It's about self-exploration, redemption and reconciliation. It's a love album, in other words. And since when is love supposed to be experimental? It should be pure and straightforward, and Sky Blue Sky is an accurate reflection of that ideology. Hopefully the album will be rediscovered for the classic it is once people learn to get over themselves and their unfair expectations. Wilco (The Album) has a LOT to live up to.
