YouTube's Gone Google

We dig on YouTube as much as the next embed-loving music blog, but we've got shit on Google. By now you've read that the Google guys laid out $1.65 billion for the user-generated, video-sharing site. That is what we in the biz call a "shitload of money." And just earlier today, YouTube inked a deal with CBS, Vivendi's Universal Music Group, and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, to distribute the companys' videos, behind-the-scenes footage, and other media goodies. Thing is, according to The Times Online, YouTube "has yet to demonstrate that it can generate profits or even significant revenues"!

So this is the part where we all sit and guess how this is gonna affect our music-video viewing. What are the mechanisms for profit? Will GoogleTube police illicit-video uploads more carefully? Heaven forbid it, but will this affect our sweet, precious embeds?? And most importantly, what's gonna happen to Diddy TV?!

You guys are smarter than us. Please, talk us down with some knowledge. If you need us, we'll be watching that Almost Famous clip on repeat 'til we fall asleep (or until it disappears -- whichever comes first).

What a marvelous ride the last few weeks have been!! It truly is a wonder to behold, as I reflect on all that I've experienced. It's been a rollercoaster ride, this is true!! I've had some ups, and I've had my downs, but as I reflect on it, I understand that without the lows, how would I know how high I can go, attaining levels of grandeur so that I can indeed look at the eyes of the Creator of the Universe and greet him with a smile, a smile that rocks the very foundations of the Cosmos, and one that holds all the darkness at bay, the smile of a small child!! Wonderful!!

If I may be so bold,

YouTube:Vimeo
Napster:Limewire

YouTube will go legit like Napster did and everyone will look for more pirate-friendly alternatives which might lead to Bubblebust 2.0.

As long as thousands of girls still decide to strip in front of their webcam, YouTube will prosper.

anyone saying .com bust hasnt been following the market since the "dot com bust". 2000 was the end of the very beginning. the internet and technology in daily life is still in growth phase, isnt that obvious? its not like everyone stopped using the internet for every aspect of their life. one thing is certain, if youtube fails, you can be certain something will replace it. so why worry?
and to clarify. napster lead the way for what we all use now, bittorents. something crude becomes something more refined and tailored to how we all want it. and torrents may go too. and so might youtube.

Why worry?

Do you have no concept of what happens if youtube is "replaced by something else?" Or if people move to something less stale than myspace? There's all of these mega companies spending astronomical amounts on some of the most questionable business models I've ever seen. All to own to latest and the greatest. What are any of of them without complete support and contribution from their users? Bankrupt, and billions lost. Then taken into consideration who the bulk of the users are of them, fickle youth. So you have all of these companies with millions upon billions of dollars invested in uncertain, communistic, websites- that contribute hardly anything to their customers, while relying on their customers for everything. At least in the .com crash the businesses involved were creating something for the customer...

If we're lucky it will be just like MTV and turn into nothing but Real World, My Super Sweet 16, and Made.

Wouldn't that be just the most fucking awesomest?

MTVoob I await your coming.

I got excited cause I thought you had written "Almost Heroes" instead of "Almost Famous". Needless to say, I am mighty disappointed.

YouTube is popular because the users have made it so. Users are dictating the market, so the industry must follow. Google may offer things for sale, and use the site a promotional tool, but I dont think it will change that much...if it does, people will abandon it, and find something else. Google has always preferred unobtrusive advertising--i dont think they are going to change their philosophy. My hopes are that the site will be come even more user friendly...
