Zooey Deschanel's (500) Days Of Summer Trailer, Soundtrack Info
The trailer for the Mark Webb-directed (500) Days Of Summer opens with Zooey Deschanel (as Summer) telling a guy listening to "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" loudly on his earphones that she, too, loves the Smiths. She sings a couple lines to prove it. The thing is, despite the setup, we're told by a voiceover that "this is not a love story." So, yeah, the light does go out, and this is when the guy, Tom (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) decides its time to win her back. Before making 500 Days, Webb did a bunch of music videos, and from the aforementioned Smiths thing to Gordon-Levitt's carefully framed Joy Division Shirt, etc., it's clear music plays a big part in the flick. We have the full trailer and, fittingly, information on the soundtrack.
Precious, huh? This was the film Zooey was promoting at Sundance a few weeks ago.

This looks fucking insufferable. It's just another shitty indie movie filled with painfully-obvious name dropping and the whole Manic Pixie Dream Girl thing that the Onion talks about.
Being an aspiring writer, I've been in plenty of creating writing classes and I've realized the horrible reason for these movies: relationships make everyone even. Even perfectly good screenwriters, who are probably very intelligent in other aspects, can't write about relationships because their opinions on the subject are no more advanced than Carrie Bradshaw. When it comes to relationships, everyone is egomaniacal, petty, and shallow, whether you drown your sorrows in Mozart, Joy Division, or Fergie.
These writers want a cute girl who likes the same things as them and who is outgoing and perky, which really only translate to: "Will go out of their way to talk to me, because, I would never have the guts to start up the conversation if they didn't." There's also the whole "I want a girl whose unique and interesting (which, again, really only translates to: she likes the same things that I do), as long as she is also very attractive, because if she's not, then what's the point?" That's pretty much it and that's why we seem to have 300 Garden States a year. It's because every young indie screenwriter has the exact same view of what a perfect girl and a perfect relationship is and its no more deep or complex than the writers of He's Just Not That Into You.

Unfortunately every once in a long long while it actually happens. It's just happened to me. Also unfortunately it almost never works. So I could bear this movie if Summer breezily flits off and leaves the dude crying all into his moleskine making the ink run.

"garden state" was great. we don't need 352 copies of it though.
also, i'd really rather not have aspiring trendsters start swarming the stores looking for smiths albums because the girl in the movie thought they were pretty cool. that happened with the shins. and really, it's just not the same as actually discovering the music and falling in love with it. liking it cuz it's cool to like it just hurts.
hollywood, go back to pandering to the masses with slapstick and overproduced action movies. stop trying too hard to cater to a demographic that can see right through you.

Woody Allen has made by my count several movies about relationships. Seems to be pretty good at it. Annie Hall is probably the definition of Manic Pixie Dream Girl, I still love watching it.

Annie Hall is not the definition of Manic Pixie Dreamgirl--or, if it is, it's a realistic take on it, rather than the fantasy one we get in Garden State, Elizabethtown, etc. Annie isn't an intellectual and doesn't like the things Alvy likes--she just goes along with it for him. She's actually kind of a ditz. The film is about a real relationship where people act like real people. They're both assholes to each other and they're both wonderful to each other, and in the end, we see why they broke up and also why they loved each other. Annie's beautiful, but she's also deeply flawed, as is Alvy, and Allen shows all of that.
Put it like this: Garden State and Elizabethtown are for guys who got dumped (or, worse, can't get a girl) and want to know there's some perfect girl out there for him (there's not), while Annie Hall examines what REALLY happens when you get that girl. Definitely the best movie about relationships that I've ever seen.

If it's the former, I would assume the answer would have something to do with the fact that 'bad kids' is a rad song, that obviously fits into the soundtrack in some way. If it's the latter, I would wager to guess that the band made a few bucks and got some exposure.

this is how history will remember the 2000s (and this movie)... just like the john hughes movies of the 80s- same themes, same characters, but highly adored by pop culture/young people who's life it is to reflect. Garden State, Juno, Nick and Norah (which all can agree was a sham), and this movie, which will be the St. Elmo's Fire of the genre... older, better acted, more dramatic... will all feel like "one of those" movies from the 2000s. And future pop-cultured kids will look to these movies and create their own M83, Saturday = Youth albums about guys who yearn for the pixie girl, relationships that have their own indie soundtracks, and how being clever and cute wins the day. With all that said... john hughes movies and these movies are fantastic! and should be respected for their place in popular culture and therefore, our lives.
