Here Come The Beatles: The Video Game

thumbnail icon: Here Come The Beatles: The Video Game

Contrary to previous speculation, the Beatles first foray into the world of fake plastic instruments and encouraging antisocial behavior will not be a Rock Band game! Although, Apple Corps has just confirmed a collaboration with MTV Networks and Harmonix, the folks who brought you ... the Rock Band game. Hmm. According to Billboard, Camp Beatles (yes that includes oversight and love from Macca, Ringo, Yoko, and Olivia Harrison) are finally ready for their videogame-console closeup, only they're doing it their own way: with a brand new mold, based on the Rock Band platform but "designed to take users on an 'experiential journey' through the Beatles' career, music and vision." That means fake-performing at Shea, but probably also fake-hanging with Dylan and fake-bong hits in India. Details are few since the project's in its early phases, but the music is confirmed to include master recordings of the Beatles' U.K. releases. Expect it for Christmas '09.

There should also be a get-Mark-David-Chapman-before-he-gets-you mission or you lose the game.

Also, as you get experience points your hair gets longer and your beard gets thicker.

I'll bet we got a million of 'em.

For decades, The Beatles was run like an elite brand - you couldnt get their records on those "10 for a penny" clubs, their music wasn't played-out in movies & commercials like that of other 60s icons, and the licensing of their image seemed to be rare. In the past few years there's been a huge shift: songs covered in commercials, the movie "Across the Universe" based around their music, the Vegas show "Love" and now a video game.

Although I've never seen anything written about this change, I do know that longtime Apple Records CEO/ex-road manager/childhood pal Neil Aspinall retired from Apple and died this year. Sony exec Jeff Jones took over the Beatles back-catalog in 2007, so I'd guess that's what's behind the shift away from the subtle approach.

There definitely appears to have been some shift; even Zeppelin has licensed a song or two in recent years.

The covers are more an issue of who owns the rights to the songs (versus the original recordings), so that's partially Michael Jackson or Sony or whoever. The "Love" musical was a project that George started with a friend of his who was one of the Cirque de Soleil founders. Neil was involved in that as well, as the executive producer.

I, for one, think this game will be fun, not sad or blasphemous. I trust Harmonix to get it right.

I bet this turns out to be a crap game. People want Rock Band: Beatles but are going to get a Peter Max overload and probably have to put up with a lot of what Apple Corp. thinks is worthwhile to give to consumers (which usually isn't much more than the same type of stuff anyone's gotten over the past 2-3 decades).

Apple Corp. being so freaking hesitant to go digital isn't as laughable as it is sad. They have about as much business sense in that field as Kid Rock does. I don't get why bands/companies think they need to sell albums as opposed to selling tracks. That's such a self-important and egotistical decision that just makes them look dumb for not making money and giving people what they want. I don't know what a company would find harmful about that. It's not like anyone thinks they're bigger than Jesus (or a Jonas) anymore anyways.

sad indeed.

if i were a musician as talented as a beatle, I'd put into my last will that no such crap could be done, as it tarnishes my true artist position and plays me as a hungry-hungry for money hippo.
