Video Hangover: Another Bad Creation - "Iesha"
Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. Why Video Hangover? Because when you watch as many videos as we do, you're going to feel it afterwards.
"Iesha"
Another Bad Creation, 1990
Coolin' in the Suburbs with Another Bad Creation.
Curse you, Konami!
When I was thirteen, "Iesha" rocked my world like a young Phylicia Rashad. But I knew I could never get with her. She liked the Raiders, I liked the Colts. She liked the monkeybars, but I was more of a jungle gym guy. I was into Super Mario Brothers, but all she wanted to do was play Rush 'n Attack.
Beware the restless ghost of Ralph Tresvant
How many kids were in this band, anyway? Was it a discreet entity, or a Menudo-style collective? AllMusic has them down as a quintet, but at the :37 mark, and again at 1:29 and 2:44, there appears to be a sixth kid in the frame. Is he an extra? An understudy? Poor guy probably hit puberty in the middle of the shoot and got kicked out of the band.
His first bad creation: white overall shorts
At the 1:28 mark, former New Edition and Bell Biv Devoe member Michael Bivens makes a brief cameo. As the manager for ABC, it makes sense that he would want to promote the band, but he comes off acting like a cross between Don King and one of those crazy tennis Dads. Was it really necessary to plug the second verse in the middle of the song? Sure, the first verse was nothing special, but they're nine years old! Let 'em sing, dammit! Guess the hype overkill makes sense though, coming from a guy who started his own TV network (the truck says Biv TV) so he could interview himself.

is that Dallas Austin at the end?

shit, the grainy quality made me initially think they were a group of dwarves. that hurt my world for a second there. not that there would be anything wrong with a troupe of flat-topped rapping dwarves.

karlhungus -- yes, that is Dallas Austin. He's a little hard to recognize without the raging drug problem, but it is him.
