Video Hangover: Europe - "Cherokee"

Twice a week, we dig in the MTV/VH1 archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. Is it crap, or is it the greatest video ever made? You decide.

"Cherokee"
Europe, 1987

Some things to consider while you’re trying to figure out why someone would bring a coffee table book to the desert…

Later repealed by the more emo-friendly Magnuson act of 1943
Music-wise, Cherokee is epic, but can someone please tell us why a Swedish hair-metal band decided to sing about the forced relocation of Native Americans in the 1830s? This would be like Panic! At the Disco writing a song about the shameful evils of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.

Unfortunately, the Keytar had been dipped in smallpox
This video combines several of our favorite things: archeologists, completely inaccurate historical re-enactments, lone figures rocking out on a desolate bluff, and a Keytar.

If you listen closely, you can hear your seventh-grade history teacher crying
The heavy footprints, the clashing swords, the firing muskets – many bands would have insisted that the music do the talking, but Europe was more concerned with telling a good story. Frankly, we wish more bands were as brave with sound design, if only to highlight the extreme dangers of soloing in the middle of a firefight.

What's worse is that the Cherokee nation comes from the East/Southeastern region of the US and have nothing to do w/ the desert. Even when pushed off their land and forced to new territory (trail of tears) they were settled in the Ozarks...still not the desert.

And no I don't teach History/Native American studies.

You should have stopped this feature with Billy Squire as there is no way you will ever, ever top it.

That being said, keep 'em coming.

good times.

Thank you for making my day so much brighter with historically incorrect 80s hair rock.

Hard to believe what was "popular" back then, and I just know that 20 years from now, everyone will be laughing at how ridiculous emo bands "were" in the 00's... every decade/generation has its serving of bad but popular music

how dare you insinuate that 'cherokee' is crap! my god, the first compact disc that i could actually call my own would go on to spawn countless short lived love affairs with other authentic tribal warriors: after 7, jane child, and the entire sammy hagar-driven 0U812 (best album title. ever!)

There are many worse hair metal videos than this. I used to really like Europe. I was 12 at the time, but nonetheless....
Tune into VH-1 Classic during their metal video show, and you will see many much worse than this.
