Video Hangover: Rick Derringer (Feat. Hulk Hogan) - "Real American"

Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, we break 'em down for you. Why Video Hangover? Because when you watch as many videos as we do, you're going to feel it afterwards.

"Real American"
Rick Derringer (Feat. Hulk Hogan), 1985

Some things to consider while you're watching the Hulkster's history lesson...

Our second favorite is "Arthur's Theme"
Is "Real American" the best theme song ever? The world of wrestling is rife with theme songs, but it's hard to believe any of them offer as perfect a match as Hulk Hogan and Rick Derringer. Maybe there are some fans out there who can enlighten us? What was Cap'n Lou Albano's theme song, anyway?

Other awesome things they couldn't handle: fighter planes, motorcycles, and the MTV Spaceman
Being a Real American is not all electric guitars, fireworks, and long, hard missiles. It is an awesome responsibility. Who else is going to tear up Quaddafi's picture, or head-butt Nikolai Volkov when he gets out of line? The British Bulldogs? Didn't think so.

America, Fuck Yeah!
Where does "Real American" rank on the list of songs about America? It's not nearly as thoughtful as this. And although it is gloriously stupid, it's neither as glorious nor as stupid as the awful John Mellencamp song that was on TV every six minutes last fall. That ditty made us want to punch America right in the face.

Take that Gadaffi!

As an Aussie, watching Hulk when I was younger made me want to be an American.

I grew old and it never happened. Maybe i didn't eat enough vitamins, maybe i didn't say enough prayers or, worse still, maybe I didn't stay true to myself.

Thanks for the post.

The whole wrestling album was one of my favs. It kicked the "Superbowl Shuffle" and "Let's Go Mets" in their respective balls. My favorite cut was Junk Yard Dog's "Grab Them Cakes." RIP JYD.

The weird thing is that this song wasn't written for Hogan. It was written for Mike Rotundo (aka I.R.S.) and Barry Windham when they were a tag team. I'm so saddened that I actually know this. I do agree, though, that it was totally perfect for the Hulkster and I used to get so freaking pumped when he would come down the aisle to this song. Ah, childhood.

(Most pointless response)
When I was a kid, I had a Hulk Hogan electric toothbrush set that talked when you would push the little ring bell. I still remember the entire speech:

"Hey all you Hulkamaniacs, this is The Hulkster talkin'! I want you to drop a leg on tooth decay, and lay a sleeper hold on those cavities. So keep on brushin', and you'll be on your way to a championship check-up. And Hulkamania will live, AND SMILE FOREVERRRR!"

Damn.
I haven't watched pro wrestling in forever.

Leon, you just made my day. I wanted one of those so badly!

I think we should find ways to incorporate the phrase "drop a leg on" into our everyday lives.
