Washin' the Dog, Washin' the Dog

breakin' the law! breakin' the law! This Slate article about the new Beavis & Butthead DVD broke my heart a little when it mentioned that a mere handful of the original series' music videos survived the legal transition to DVD, none of which are the ones I consider iconic. I know it's not Mike Judge's fault, and that this was probably rushed out in order to ride the holiday season's DVD rush, but it's not really complete until you can see MC 900ft Jesus shipped cross-country. This ILM thread took me back the way the DVDs won't...KMFDM, Pavement, Flaming Lips, Ween, and all those other bands you discovered on B&B. Out of curiosity: who else did you discover there?

i was already familiar with both, but i have two good video memories of b&b: the beck "pay no mind" video where they compare him to the "gifted kids" and the helium "xxx" video where they have a tight closeup of the (then) bassist and butthead says, deadpan, "ace ventura, pet detective."

Built To Spill's video for "in the Morning" was on there. They made fun of it (it's pretty bad).

Thanks Paulie. At least I remembered the song title. I'm glad other kids dug the video's, too. In 6th grade I told everyone that the videos were my favorite part and they all told me that a)those were the most boring parts b)the music sucked and c)go away. Maybe we'll be treated to those videos in a future edition of the DVD collection. What were some videos they thought rocked? I remember STP - Plush, but not sure if they liked it or not

White Zombie!

And didn't they refer to Olivia Newton John as Olivia "Neuter" John?

Also, I just remembered seeing a Pat Benetar video where one of them said "That's Pat Nebatar. She used to have sexual intercourse with Dan Henley."

I didn't discover PJ Harvey that way, but I remember when they were watching the 50 ft Queenie video and Butthead decided that the music was for people without friends. Beavis, the underappreciated genius that he was, wondering if it was for people who didn't have friends to begin with, or wanted all of their friends to go away.

Also, I loved how Beavis would sometimes have bubbles float out of his head caused by the anticipation of rocking, like during the verse parts of Radiohead's Creep.

"Shakin'" by Eddie Money was a good one...so obviously coked to the gills and just, you know, sitting in a car makin' crazy eyes. I can't remember which of the two of them did the imitation but it was pretty spot on.

B: 'Are these guys from Seattle?'

Is it just me, or are the participants on that ILM thread kinda music-dumb? I love ILM - used to participate - but, come one...DEVO!? Are you 8 years old!?

Anyway...I just wanted to say that I know a girl who used to date either MC 900 Foot Jesus or his keyboard player. I never found out for sure, cause I didn't want to bring it up, cause I wanted to ask her out.

(Yeah, I got mad connections.)

I discovered Jon Spencer Blues Explosion or the Reverend Horton Heat on B&B, I can't remember which (or maybe it was both!).

Damn, I wish I remembered seeing pavement or MC900FtJesus on B&B. That's probably because I wasn't into either group back then, what was it 1993 or 1994? By the way, Pavement's reissues of their 1st two albums are MUST-HAVES!

I barely remember PJ Harvey on B&B, and I probably changed the channel before I could appreciate her - or B&B's way of making fun of the people who listen to her music, as someone else brought up earlier!
And of course I remembered discovering White Zombie on the show. No one can forget that!

I was in college during the heyday of B&B and I recall an acquaintance ripping on Morrissey because B&B hated them. a) The video was "November Spawned a Monster" and b) as great as the show was, weren't you supposed to like the bands they hated?

Their take on Nitzer Ebb's "Godhead" was also pretty funny.

So many wonderful memories:

Live "I Alone": They make fun of the drummer, who has no drums durring the whole video, and just jumps around like a dumbass.

The Cramps "Ultra-Twist": Butthead's rendition of the song is the best. This may also be the video where Beavis says the guy looks like the Cryptkeeper, who he then says looks like a nutsack.

My wife and I just picked up the box set, and I agree, it just isn't the same watching the episodes without the music videos interleaved.

In the 90s there was nothing funnier to me than when B&B watched Reverend Horton Heat's "Psychobilly Freak Out" and said someone looked like the Crypt Keeper.

A discussion ensued as to what the Crypt Keeper's nut sack looked like.

And then of course, Beavis did his best impression: "Hey there boys and ghouls! Here's a little tale from my nut sack!"

Some Jackson 5 song from the reunion - can't remember what the song was, but I know the boys went apesh-t over Tito. Boombastic by Shaggy was another classic. And of course, Pavement - "They're too lazy to rock...and they're too lazy to clean the tub"

White Zombie and Rob Zombie owe their carriers to B&B. No one played the 1965 video till B&B. Only then did Headbangers ball start playing that video.

i loved when they watched babes in toyland's "bruise violet," and the song said "liar" and beavis started shouting "FIRE!" there's no way that one will ever get released on DVD, because it will encourage small children to burn things, or whatever.
