We Are (Not) Dios

From Rolling Stone: California rockers Dios, whose debut album of the same name was released in March, have changed their name to Dios Malos after a cease-and-desist order was issued by Ronnie James Dio. The singer, who since 1983 has fronted the band Dio, believed the similarity in names would cause confusion among audiences. "It's pretty retarded," Dios' bassist J.P. Cabellaro says.

Apparently, Dion (of "Runaround Sue" and "The Wanderer") wasn't available for comment.

Really, he did them a favor. Any press is good press. I've never heard of Dios before, but the two tracks posted impress. Hope they're playing NYC sometime soon...

Ah, this reminds me of the day our algebra teacher told is this story about how his friend dragged him to a Dio concert when they were younger. And our teacher dressed all preppy to the concert and had no idea what was going on. He said these "tough" guys started picking on him, asking him what the hell he was doing there, but left him alone because he started doing the "rock on" sign with his hand and saying, "Dio, man! DIO!"

dios shouldn't have buckled. a lawsuit over this would've been great press for them and truly lousy press for the washed-up has-been who is memorable only for "the last in line," a song that sums up what he has become. seriously: i never, EVER thought of ronnie james dio when i heard the band's (old) name. i think they'd prevail in a suit--with three "dre"s in hip-hop, a bryan adams and a ryan adams, and so on, how the hell could dio claim "confusion in the marketplace?" i think they should re-think their knuckling under.

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...

Raleigh-via-Eau Clair BTW Megafaun debuted impressively earlier this year with Bury The Square. The trio nip-and-tuck experimental tendencies (tape splicing, white noise colliding with banjo, junkyard-laced spring reverb, screeching feedback at the tail end of a quiet back porch lament)...
