We Got The Tweet: The Week's 50 Best Rock Star Twitters

Twitter has revolutionized the way celebrities broadcast what they ate for lunch. In this column, Stereogum founder @scottgum tracks the latest rock star Tweets and Twends.

Microblogging service Twitter has signed up countless celebrities in recent months, and among them are some of our favorite musical artists: Trent Reznor! Colin Meloy! Ed Droste! Diddy! Stereogum Tweets too! But who can keep up with all that lunch eating? Most of us only have eight hours a day with which to procrastinate in the Twitterverse. That's why every week Stereogum founder Scott Lapatine (@scottgum) will compile the best recent rock and pop star Tweets in this space. And by "best" we sometimes mean "worst." And by "star" we rarely mean more than "professional musician" (or MC Hammer). In this inaugural column, covering the week of 3/16 more or less, a Fleet Fox quits smoking, Courtney Love goes off her meds, everyone and their mother goes to SXSW, and Ryan Adams hijacks his wife's Twitter account. This will get #ugly.

3/15 @RobynKonichiwa acknowledged her core fanbase...

The next installment of We Got The Tweet won't be a list of 50, more like ten. Also, it may have a theme -- like "the weather" or "my publicist writes this."

If there's someone on Twitter we should be following, Tweet a message to @stereogum or shout out in the comments. We're all in this together.

Colin Meloy is such a defensive D-Bag

Ignoring the quality of Hazards for the moment, I thought Meloy's response was pretty funny and genial, considering how much money that bad P4k review is going to cost him and his band. Especially when his little rock opera has little hope of producing singles and generating mainstream sales.

Eh...it's just a harmless prank.

However, LOL at dude from Islands ripping Tricky and Jane's Addiction. Yeah, they're both kinda lame, but fucking Islands - god awful.

Cornell would like to be a modern social networking riding celebrity a la Kanye or John Mayer - but it just doesn't suit him.

I don't get it, why is Twitter so popular? It's just one of those fads that doesn't make sense, we're so A.D.D. that we need micro-blogging.

In essence, I think Twitter is stupid. That said, it can be sort of interesting for people of "public interest" (if they update it themselves). Just think of Morrissey with a twitter account for a second here!

For regular people it's just wrong, too impersonal and self-absorbed. Use your stupid Facebook status!

Thankfully, they have RSS feeds so I've subscribed to the ones I think may be worth following in my reader.

I have a feeling if Solange Knowles were to post on Stereogum, it'd go something like this - Animal Collective > Grizzly Bear = R. Kellly Tp. 2 . > Of Montreal? Maybe.

Nick Thorburn from Islands is very judgmental! For someone who isn't exactly well known outside of the indie blog-hyped music spectrum, he sure likes to call out people more successful than him... ie. tricky, janes addiction, vampire weekend etc.

Well, I was kind of upset he hates Jane's Addiction, but Vampire Weekend sucks so much I forgave him for that.

Thorburn/Islands did the whole Graceland-esque album long before Vampire Weekend ever came onto the scene. Plus Return to Sea is better than anything Vampire Weekend has or ever will release.

Anybody notice that none of these twitters occurs before 10AM or after 4:00Am (excluding chris cornell, around 6:00AM) the earliest is 10:02 am. Does twitter not update specifically when the person sends it? Or does this sample, xbar = 50, of artists not do anything between those hours, other than presumably sleep?

Ha, major respect for Colin Meloy. Pitchfork is the bane of good, creative music in our society right now, killing off anything that doesnt have "image" or isnt overly "trendy". I'm eagerly awaiting the downfall of that site. as is Colin, and many others.
