Weekend Update [Oooh ... Pun!]

Is Saturday Night Live's season finale tonight the last for Jimmy Fallon? A few months ago, word on the street was that Jimmy's leaving. ?

Despite Grambo's accusations of the no buzz variety, if you haven't been Tivo'ing the last few episodes, you've been missing out. Last week's Snoop Dogg-hosted episode was excellent, as was the previous one with Lindsay "They're real and they're spectacular" Lohan.

Suicide Girls agrees hot, young stars are working best as hosts:

Suicide Girls: Recently, episodes on SNL were really good like Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera.

Tina Fey: A lot of these young, pop star hosts have worked out really good for us this year. It’s all these Mousketeer kids because they did this when they were 4. Ben Affleck, he’s like the next Alec Baldwin for us. He’s going to be like “Great, have him come back whenever he wants.” We’ve had some good shows this year.

Anyway, I know there are a lot of Jimmy haters out there, but Fallon's been a huge asset to the show. If he's really leaving, it'll end one of the best Weekend Update runs in the show's nearly 30 year history.

Weekend Update hosts through the years:

  • Chevy Chase (1975-76)
  • Jane Curtin (1976-80)
  • Dan Aykroyd (1977-78)
  • Bill Murray (1978-80)
  • *Charles Rocket (1980-81)
  • Gail Matthius (1981)
  • Brian Doyle-Murray (1981-82)
  • Mary Gross (1981-82)
  • Christine Ebersole (1982)
  • Brad Hall (1982-84)
  • Christopher Guest (1984-85)
  • Dennis Miller (1985-91)
  • Kevin Nealon (1991-94)
  • Norm MacDonald (1994-1997)
  • Colin Quinn (1998-2000)
  • Jimmy Fallon & Tina Fey (2000-present)
*Fired for saying "fuck" on-air. This is a great book if you're interested in such things. Also Jay Mohr's tell-all looks promising.

Anyway, here's a funny bit from last week that parodied Jimmy's guitar sketches.

FEY: Now, with some thoughts on Mother's Day is our own, Jimmy Fallon.
FALLON: Thanks Tina. Mother's Day is really special to me and I wrote a few songs to show how special it is.
FEY: Ughhh.. really?! Again?!
FALLON: What?
FEY: You're gonna do the song parodies, again?
FALLON: Yea, I haven't done 'em all year.
FEY: Yea, but you've been doing them for soooo loooong.

Jimmy and Tina also welcomed a special guest (played by Dratch):

FEY: And now it's time for Weekend Update's Dirtbag of the Week.
FALLON: She hails from a trailer home in Nashby, West Virginia. After a brief marriage at 19 and a job working at a chicken processing plant, she decided to become a soldier.
FEY: When she's not busy disgracing her country in ways that will have international repercussions for decades, she enjoys smoking and getting pregnant in military jail. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Weekend Update's Dirtbag of the Week ... Private First Class, Lynndie England. Congratulations Lynndie, here's your box of Virginia Slims.

Watch the whole Update here, thanks to FallonFey.

Watch tonight -- Mary-Kate and Ashley are hosting. And look for UltraOlsen in the audience! Stereogum is jealous. I wanna hear the first Apple Martin joke in person.

UPDATE: Olsens episode sucked. Oh well.

I guess I'll get the Fallon-hate-ball rolling.

In case folks have forgotten what funny sketch comedy is like, you might want to watch a handful of Chapelle's Show repeats or episodes of the Daily Show. Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon... I'm sorry, but I don't understand the purpose of gushing all over them. Every time I've tuned into SNL in the last year, I've been embarrassed for the performers it's so bad. Haven't you noticed that half the sketches can hardly ellicit a laugh from their own studio audience? These sketches start with a lame idea, degenerate into a lot of yelling and jumping around, and then sort of fizzle out. And Weekend Update seems to mostly be about how Tina and Jimmy can't get over how funny they think they are... they can scarcely stop themselves from laughing at their own jokes before they've even delivered the punchline.

Look, I can certainly see how humor is subjective... but I sincerely don't understand what people like about the modern SNL.

Fallon and Fey are like the only reason I'd turn on SNL; I love Weekend Update. What about the one where the Tina robot fails! Ohhh, you crazy news anchors, you.

In response to that Joey guy, The Daily Show is flat out not funny.

"Oh, get a load of this headline! They made a spelling error! Let's joke about it! FOR 2 WHOLE MINUTES!"

"Really, interviewee, that's so interesting but [dumb joke saying "we're-oh-so-liberal-here-at-the-daily-show" to keep the audience's attention during the boring interview]!"

Am I the only person in the world who likes both the Daily Show and Saturday Night live? Anyways, the "modern SNL" is great. I might be too young to appreciate the older SNL episodes, but I still don't understand how Jimmy Fallon is not considered up there with the older SNL cast. Next year I'll miss him on weekend update, but that brings up the big question... who will replace him as the achor? Im hoping SETH MEYERS. He is amazingly funny. Either SETH MEYERS or Will Forte, but I don't know if he would have chemistry with Tina Fey.

As much as I worship Fey, I agree that she needs a co-host on WU. Meyers would be logical, because he's prone to giggling during skits like Fallon. Forte is too much of a hit-or-miss commodity still.

I'd like to cast a ballot for Armisen, though. I love that guy.

Fred Armisen should definite be given a shot at Weekend Update. He is easilly the funniest all around cast member on the show nowadays.

And yes, Fallon is a tad over-rated. A few years back when he became aware of himself, he really jumped the shark and became just a Fallon parody of himself.

so true.
seth meyers is a thousand times better than fallon. he should get to co-anchor WU (armisen would be my 2nd choice. but seth is just too good already).

OMG! Jimmy Fallon is a great comdian and he can do so much more! He can sing, act, and play the guitar! His C.D. was great, I mean come on he was nominated for a grammy! And on top of that he is sooo hot and he doesn't even know it, he was in 50 Most Beautiful People in a magazine and whenever people mention it he gets all red, its so cute. He has a great personality and does the best impressions especially adam sandler (just listen to his c.d.) I'm sure he will go far after leaving SNL.
