What Do These Movies Have In Common?

Here's a list of nineteen films, of which you're sure to know a couple, that share a special musical bond. Peruse the list:

The Outsiders
Wild At Heart
Pope Of Greenwich Village
Clean & Sober
An American Werewolf In London
Extreme Close-Up
Thelma & Louise
The Last Waltz
King Of Comedy
Born On The Fourth Of July
As Good As It Gets
Patch Adams
An Officer And A Gentleman
French Kiss
Fever Pitch
One Fine Day
Donovan Quick
The Matchmaker
The Departed
Think you know what ties 'em together? Make your guess, then take the jump.

Van The Man! The tie that binds. To celebrate Morrison's ubiquity as film-soundtrack fodder, he's set to release Van Morrison At The Movies: The Soundtrack Hits, a collection of 19 of his classic cuts, presented "as they've been featured in films." Yeah, we all have these songs already, but the comp is pretty cool, and the incentive to completists is a previously unreleased live version of "Moondance." Here's the tracklist:

01. "Gloria" (performed by Them) - The Outsiders
02. "Baby, Please Don’t Go" (performed by Them) - Wild At Heart
03. "Jackie Wilson Said (I’m In Heaven When You Smile)" - Pope Of Greenwich Village
04. "Domino" (live) - Clean & Sober
05. "Moondance" (live)* - An American Werewolf In London
06. "Queen Of The Slipstream - Extreme Close-Up
07. "Wild Night" - Thelma & Louise
08. "Caravan" (live) - The Last Waltz
09. "Wonderful Remark - King Of Comedy
10. "Brown Eyed Girl" - Born On The Fourth Of July
11. "Days Like This" - As Good As It Gets
12. "Into The Mystic" (live) - Patch Adams
13. "Hungry For Your Love" - An Officer And A Gentleman
14. "Someone Like You" - French Kiss
15. "Bright Side Of The Road" - Fever Pitch
16. "Have I Told You Lately?" - One Fine Day
17. "Real Real Gone" - Donovan Quick
18. "Irish Heartbeat" (with Chieftains) - The Matchmaker
19. "Comfortably Numb" (live) - The Departed

If you guessed it, we totally owe you a cookie, 'cause that'd be fucking impressive.

Van Morrison At The Movies: The Soundtrack Hits is out 2/13/07 on Manhattan/EMI.

More importantly, you left off "Everyone" from the closing scene of The Royal Tenenbaums.

Two more:

"I'll Be Your Lover, Too" and "Sweet Thing" in Moonlight Mile, the former closing out the film in what may be a top ten musical cue. I believe "Sweet Thing" was remastered just for MM, or at least it sounds like they tweaked it...

"I'll Be Your Lover, Too" was also featured in that godawful Russell Crowe/Meg Ryan thriller Proof of Life.

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue from the Basquiat soundtrack is an unfortunate omission.

Nothing was Better than "Glad Tidings" on the closing scene of the Soprano's season 5. I know it wasn't "a movie" but it was so impressionable. The Feds bust Johnny Sack, Tony fleas in the snow, Van blares..."la la la la, la la la la..."

Did you see this guy on Austin City Limits? Fantastic.
Could use some Crest Whitestrips though.

I guess his drunken performance of "Have I Told You Lately" with Sinead O'Connor on David Letterman didn't qualify as a "soundtrack." He almost knocked Miss O'Connor's teeth out with the mic. TV gold.

"If you guessed it, we totally owe you a cookie, 'cause that'd be fucking impressive."

I want my cookie. No, really, I want my cookie - based on the Outsiders alone I guessed "Stevie Wonder or Van Morrison." So apparently, I'm impressive? That's a first...

"Someone Like You" was featured in the final scenes of "Someone Like You" and "Bridget Jones's Diary" (Ashley Judd and Renee Zellweger "get" Hugh Jackman and Colin Firth, respectively, in the scenes).

I am shocked and dismayed nobody has mentioned the use of 'Into the Mystic' in the pivotal worlds-colliding scene of Dream a Little Dream, that wonder of Coreyness, squared.

I think it was Van's version of "Baby Please Don't Go" playing in the Nick Nolte basketball recruiting movie Blue Chip.

I think that one was omitted for the same reason as Bringing Out The Dead and Sleeping With the Enemy: try to skip the shitty ones.

Ha! Just had to comment that David Bowie would have to horn in on someone else's publicity! Surely we're not expected to believe he's that desperate!
