What Rivers Cuomo Liked

The Harvard-educated rocker took time out from his litigious ways to write a column called "Stuff I Liked In '06" for the school paper, and we thought his choices were worth a look. Yeah, it's from last month, but you totally don't read The Harvard Crimson. Some highlights:

2. Nelly Furtado—“Promiscuous” and “Maneater.” I admire her independence from the expectations of her fanbase.

7. Keane—“Somewhere Only We Know.” I think this song was on my list last year but it still makes my heart beat fast.

8. Panic At The Disco—“I Write Sins Not Tragedies.” This song seems so avant-garde and yet it’s structurally very simple and repetitive. Good job, kids.

13. Shakira—“Hips Don’t Lie.” I’ve love the music for this song. Does anyone know where it’s from? It sounds familiar.

14. The Fray—“Over My Head.” I finally realized why this song sounded so right to me the first time I heard it on the radio: My drummer reminded me that Weezer toured with The Fray in 2004 and I so must have heard this song every night through the walls of my dressing room.

18. Jojo—“Too Little, Too Late.” A rare example of a chorus that starts on the II chord rather than the I chord.

Read the rest here. As much as we get disappointed by Weezer's recent output, gotta love how unpretentious he is. Of course this may also explain why we're disappointed with Weezer's recent output.

17. Yung Joc and Young Dro. Supplying my thug fix.

even weezer needs a little thug fix every once in a while

unpretentious? or out of touch?

This is me being as unpretentious as I can be, but you know there is trouble when Mr. Cuomo likes a PANIC song. I mean, taking fairly generic pop-punk guitars and replacing singing with talking/yelling simply does not make for good music.

'This song seems so avant-garde and yet it's structurally very simple and repetitive'

That's the most concise description of weezer i've ever seen.

the dylan list (farther down, after Rivers' list) was more interesting. and, no, i'm not 50.

Lost is too violent?

"Country music sounds good to me now that I'm a family man"???

I think my head is going to cave in.

Why is listening to the radio less pretentious than seeking out music that doesn't make the Top 40?

And for someone who stoppoed listening to Weezer after Pinkerton, their more recent recorded output suddenly makes a lot more sense (to be fair, I've only heard the singles).

Shakira's song has a sample of a Jerry Riviera's salsa song.

Make Believe was a great album. It did, however, contain 'Beverley Hills' and 'We're All On Drugs', which are two of the worst songs ever recorded, and both of which were released as singles. Whoever came up with that idea should be shot.

Rivers Cuomo is odd.

there should be a weezer song on guitar hero, specifically something from the blue album or pinkerton.

Isn't it a little pretentious (or something) to not remember that a band toured with you?

...ok there's being pretentious, and then there's putting Jojo anywhere on a favorite music list.

Nice try though, Rivers. You still suck.

i LOVE that nelly furtado alb... well maybe not all of the songs, but i love promiscuous, maneater, and say it right. lovelove.

and i agree with ne-yo, unfortunately :p

i think i'll shoot myself though if i ever hear that panic @the disco song again on the godforsaken top 40 station at work again. tragically, it is the only station that gets reception in the office :(

Employing harvard wit to condescend the "public" thinking they will be too dumb to see the "praise" as the jabs that they are, yeah that's not pretentious at all...?? tell me you guys don't actually eat this smarm posing as sincerity posing as irony? oh wait, this is your language, I'm the one who missed the boat. sorry.

I think it might actually be him making fun of the music that's popular these days. If not, then he's quite the unpretentious, isn't he?
