What's Good Wedding Music?
Help me pick my wedding playlist. The band we booked (not the Decemberists) will add three tunes of our choice to its repertoire. I'm pushing fiancée/guest blogger EJ to stick with Motown and R&B. (After midnight I'll allow "Hey Ya" and "Do You Like The Way I Rock It: Love Theme To Chaotic.")
Do you guys know about Motown Remixed? Fucking killer. Here's a sample.
Jackson 5 - "I Want You Back (Z-Trip Remix)" (MP3 link removed)

What about not to blog? Get a SW radio and burn all the ipods... taco bell sucks big time and Motown is dead, I do not give a rat's ass... need aspirine...

Teddy Pendergrass - "You're My Latest My Greatest Inspiration"
Diana Ross - "Love Hangover"
That's a start...

So right now on this site there is one BlogAd for CareerBuilder that features a chimp dressed up in a shirt and tie. Then, above it on the page, there is another BlogAd showing a chimp in a suit. This one is a typical PETA tantrum about how exploited the chimps in the CareerBuilder ads are. Having both of the ads on the same page, at the same time... that's just fantastic!

Oh yeah, and Stevie Wonder - "You Met Your Match"

Don't forget something by The Dan Band.

There's no beating "Ribbon in the Sky," by Stevie Wonder.
Or maybe "What Love Has Joined Together" by Smokey Robinson... or... "A Love I Can See" by the Temptations?
Deviating from the Motown theme, Chicago's "Color My World" is pretty too.
Score = 0
And ok, one of my favorite love songs is actually "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb but I dunno if that's what you're going for.
Score = 0
Oh, it doesn't have to be Motown, that was just an idea. Funk, R&B, Rock, whatever... I just want classics that aren't too played out. E.g., Kool & The Gang is OK, but not "Celebration."

Gummer besides anything by the Nug. could I suggest
The Complete Stax-Volt Singles 1959-1968 [BOX SET] did I say funky! and just obscure enough to keep your groove on, a great set....Let me know if you need a file posted for your consideration..

Barry White's "My First, My Last, My Everything" It makes people stupidly happy. (The first time I really heard it was in a K-Mart looking for a cheap fan. You could *see* everybody get psyched. Can't frown to it.) The beat is so simple that that spinster great aunt with a hump back can dance to it.
Toni Tony Tone's (vowel order?) "It Feels Good."
Cliched, but "You're all I need (to get by)" is very pretty.
Another cliched but pretty song "Let's stay together"
I love weddings (with open bars), so I'll try to think of more.

If you are going Stevie Wonder, then I highly recommend 'AS' and for funk/soul, Some Kind of Wonderful by Soul Brother Six (a bit too common but still great), Everything I Do Gohn Be Funky by Lee Dorsey, Nobody but You Babe by Clarence Reid.
A couple from my wedding playlist are Loco De Amor by David Byrne, The Greatest Thing by Elvis Costello, Life is Good by Los Lobos, More Than This by Roxie Music, Call My Name by Prince, and Oh Yoko by Lennon. Not classics, but pretty much instantly likeable and not your standard fare.

You may not have known your fiancee back in middle school, but you can see how it'd feel by making out with her to "Stairway to Heaven".

Oh, and "The Tide is High", that's got a good beat.

Phil Collins, fer shur. :)
Seriously, Etta James and Otis Redding are always good picks. Kinda inappropriate, but the original of "Tainted Love" by Gloria Jones. "Your Song" to get all the mid-50's crying. "Picture Book" by the Kinks, not very lovey-dovey, but appropriate. Canadian classic: "If you could Read My Mind" by Gordon Lightfoot.
But you should have two of my favourite cheese picks "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Gloria". "Eclipse of the Heart" will totally get Gramma moving.

'Cry to Me' by Solomon Burke

"Fresh" by Kool & the Gang and "I believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)by Stevie Wonder were big hits at my wedding but then again so was "If you wanna be my lover" by the Spice Girls, so I don't know...

I DJed a wedding a little while ago... and outside of the bride thinking I was playing "Ice Ice Baby" instead of "Under Pressure" and getting quite upset, it went well. Beatles went over well (the cheesy but fun stuff like Twist and Shout, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, She Loves You), Ben Folds' "The Luckiest" (that was the bride's suggestion), a little Stevie Wonder, and of course, the parade of cheese -- YMCA, Celebration, Love Shack, Sugar Sugar, etc. (the songs that get just about anyone dancing). "Mission Impossible Theme" during the garter belt removal was popular.
My attempts at non-standard stuff was more or less ignored, like REM's Be Mine (I'm a huge REM fan, so I had to get some REM in there). But I say put some in anyway -- the DJ has to be happy too! Have fun with it, but don't do anything to get the bride upset. That's an ugly scene.

Phil Collins, "Easy Lover".
Not lyrically, just because your post of a week or so ago reminded me of what a kickass track that is. :)
Score = 0
But generally, yeah, I agree with you Scott, Motown is the great equalizer with these things.

Sugar by Stevie Wonder. I had it playing at my wedding when we caught the cake and people loved it.

I second janine's Barry White nomination, but if you could somehow get the band to perform it as the Go Home mash-up "Wouldn't it be nice to be your first," then THAT would get things going.

If I ever get married (or hijacked by terrorists-which is become more statistically likely by the mo) I have two songs all picked out- and the genius bit is they work for either situation. "Don't Dictate"- the Wedding Present cover version and "Wicked Game"- the Les Reines Prochaines cover. Feel free to borrow them. Future groom/abductor, you are on notice.

You Can Never Tell - Chuck Berry

Daniel Johnston's "Go" as covered by the combined forces of Sparklehorse and The Flaming Lips. A slow dance number, certainly, but utterly gorgeous and fitting of the occasion. I was gonna use it myself, but who am I kidding here? Take it, it's yours...

I'd second god only knows and add al green let's stay together and prince, wonderwall is never a mistake, and i have a certain affection for hot chocolate "you sexy thing" (seriously, the lyrics are perfect!) and of course, inxs - never tear us apart.

here are some random ones:
-last night a DJ saved my life
-come on-a my house (rosemary clooney)- random but good, especially while people are in the more mellow portion of the wedding (like dinner break); always makes everyone smile
-lovely day by bill withers
- a junior senior song will always get people dancing
and for some long island bat mitzvah flashback flavor, a walk the dinosaur after a few hours of drinking will get the party hoppin' for all those who are 25+

One thing to think about it is that you can put almost anything on during dinner. It doesn't have to be danceable.
You can't go wrong with Moondance by Van Morrison.

I can't believe that nobody has suggested Insane Clown Posse.
Nothing says I Love You like "Bugz On My Nutz" or "Redneck Hoe"
I mean can't you just picture the in-laws singing along to this?

"Love's Theme" - Love Unlimited Orchestra
"My Little Corner of the World" - Yo La Tengo

Also, if you're going to go with Stevie Wonder, pick something offbeat like "Overjoyed," his finest ballad IMO.
And for Otis Redding, how about "My Lover's Prayer," that song fucking kills me.

Sweet Pea -- Tommy Roe
I'm the sure the band will appreciate the ease with which they can learn this song, and I'm sure your guests will appreciate all the action they'll get on the dance floor while it's being played.

You're all forgetting some key ingredients to a successful wedding singer/dj. You will absolutely 100 % fail if you do not play a whole set of AIR SUPPLY, John Denver's "Annie's Song", and cap it off with "Big Balls" by AC/DC. I know those choices may seem random, but I assure you of their necessity.
