What's The Hipster Listening To?

"Are you a real New Yorker?" This week Time Out New York asks us to prove it by taking this intense quiz, on which we performed miserably. Guess we're not real New Yorkers? Our rent bill implies otherwise.

Here's our favorite part: Match the hipster to what's on his/her iPod!

1. The Cure
2. The Last Five Years
3. Spiritualized
4. Nando Lauria
5. Parliament
6. Ted Leo + Pharmacists

Answers after the jump...

1. The Cure: F
2. The Last Five Years: A
3. Spiritualized: B
4. Nando Lauria: D
5. Parliament: E
6. Ted Leo + Pharmacists: C

Yeah, we failed too. Thank god. If there was a superficial formula for guessing our iPod contents, they'd get the wrong idea.

If you fail the ultimate hipster quiz, I think that makes you hip by definition.

I knew the blonde girl liked parliament, since she was the least likely person to listen to them. I like Parliament and the Cure, so am I a hipster? Probably, since I'm watching the scissor sisters halloween webcast as I write this.

I got two right. The Ted Leo guy and The Cure girl just seemed to fit right. The other ones I had my doubts about.

F was too easy. The rest? I couldn't figure them out.

Hahahaha, I got one correct. C --> Ted Leo. Otherwise I fail at identifying who listens to what, in real life as well. Its very ambiguous for the most part: there's a girl who I was thought was a victim of pop hip-hop who turned out to have an impressive array of indie pop. Bizarre. =D

I think most of us got The Cure and Ted Leo and haven't heard the others. They aren't real hipster music, anyways. stereogum doesn't approve!!

Good, it's not bad that I don't know bands 2&5. A hipster is basically is someone who listens to indie rock, not sure how George Clinton, who was in parliament, is indie by the way, and pretty much hates everyone else who listens to the mainstream. Since we read stereogum, we might be hipsters, or not, who cares real hipsters know that labels are stupid and pointless.

"A hipster is basically is someone who listens to indie rock, not sure how George Clinton, who was in parliament, is indie by the way, and pretty much hates everyone else who listens to the mainstream."

um ... you may want to bone up on your definition/etymology of the word 'hipster' there, kid. because you sound awfully white and nerdy.

the girl listening to spirtualized is not hot. the blond is now hotter, though, because she was listening to parliament.

I basically stole the definition from urban dictionary. I actually hate labels based on music, because I know people who would probably be labeled as hippies who listen to indie rock, and I personally listen to most styles of music, and pride myself on not falling into a label.

Hipsters looove labels, as far as I can tell. But that test isn't fair. "Needles" is a wrong answer and "hypodermic needles" is correct? No fair.

I don't think that woman listening to the cure is a hipster. She looks more like a professional to me. And why are they "kids"? Let's hold these ADULTS accountable for their actions.

Let's say that I got them all right...does that make me Nostradamus or more of a hipster-know-it-all. Personally, I don't like either title. Either way, I am a hipster novice at best, and I haven't been to NY since I was a HS Senior on a field trip. That alone should tell you all you need to know about the accuracy of these things.

Trick question. Real hipsters railed against ipods 2 years ago because they got to "mainstream."

Nothing determines one's hipster-ness like the CNN Indie quiz: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2006/indie.scene/ (click "How indie are you?" under Under Cover)
