Cool Mark Ronson Not Down With Pitchfork
For many a scenester on this side of the Atlantic, 'it' is cool if Pitchfork says so. Funny to think that, on the other side of the ocean, it's a nod from (or at least association with) Mark Ronson that dubs thee hip. (Just ask the "LDN Is A Victim" kids.) So what we have here is a slow-brewing duel of cool. Via NME:
NME: Hello, Mark. Does the weight of cool hang heavy on your shoulders ... Every day, you get out of bed, 'God God, I'm cool Mark Ronson, what cool things can I do today?' You go down the shops and you have to buy something 'cool'...Sure that was an unnecessarily harsh news item from P4K, but maybe this, too, informs your opinion, Mark?MARK RONSON: (Laughs) Well, I've never really been 'cool' before. Especially in New York. There's a lot of those really 'crusading' and very serious music websites such as Pitchfork and I specifically can't stand that one. They wrote about Amy Winehouse. 'She's terrible, she should go fuck off.' I mean, that's some serious bullshit.
We tease, Ronson knows we love him and can't shut up about how great Version is. And it will always be amusing to know he DJ'd TomKat's wedding. Fortunately, New York Magazine asked him about that special night...
He also takes on the occasional high-profile assignment, like the TomKat wedding last year in Bracciano, Italy, where, like all the hired help, he aimed to please. “I think it was the first time I’ve ever played a J.Lo record,” he says. “Tom came up to me and was like, ‘You’re killing it, man.’ He literally said, ‘You’re killing it.’ ”Sadly, we can so picture that.

I'm so glad to hear this Any Winehouse trashing, I thought I was the only one who thought she was horrible. I get so sick of seeing her glorified EVERYWHERE I turn, ugh! And she's so nasty gross. Yuck.

amy winehouse could pass as a trani.

A DJ doesn't like Pitchfork. Wow, people care enough to write this up? Who gives a shit?

Pitchfork are the biggest bunch of elitist pricks. ever.

The influence of Pitchfork has to be slight in comparison to the tool of the music industry in Britain, the NME.
How an earth did bands like the View ever become big exactly!

who is mark ronson and why is he cool?

Mark Ronson is a man who makes it his business to ruin songs. It's all about the money isnt it Mark?! ... sigh

Mark Ronson is terrible.

I heard a cut off of Mark Ronson Covers Radiohead on KCRWs Metropolis show - pretty nice stuff. Perhaps the reviewer at Pitchfork is tone deaf?
Score = -1
So the Winehouse backlash is in full effect.
Amy rocks, no matter what those elitist hipsters think.

This is probably the first time I've ever agreed with pitchfork. And yet I also agree with Ronson. What is wrong with me?!
Pitchfork is crap.
Amy Winehouse is just extremely annoying.
Both always have been and most likely always will be.

have you seen the mark ronson wiki?

makes me want to back pitchfork in that fight.

Amy Winehouse stabbed me in the face.

I don't think we need to lambast Ronson or Winehouse or Pitchfork. Can't everyone just have their own opinion without people picking a side? No one REALLY gives a fuck about any of these people or YOU anyways.
Don't mean to get all Rodney King on everyone, but seriously, can't we all just get along? Oh, I forgot, that's what blogs and their commenters are all about. I'll keep that in mind when I start my music blog.

it's worth noting that the initial winehouse-hate at pfork came from amy phillips, whom they trot out every time they want to validate their collective misogyny by having it come from a contributor with (ostensibly) two x chromosomes.
Score = 0
This guy is a fucking DJ and Amy Phillips was dead-on (as well as amusing).
Score = 0
Haha, this is pretty funny. But I do hate Pitchfork ever so much.
Score = 0
dang, i thought you said CHARLES BRONSON......

as much as you all hate pitchfork, you do have to agree that they are on point most of the time when it comes to more alternative/indie music.
NME on the other hand deserves alot of hate! all they do is overhype crappy british guitar bands and slap the indie label or other stupid genre names on them to make em sound cool.
I dont understand the hype about Amy Winehouse myself, i dont think she is very good. terrible maybe harsh but its understandable.
and wtf is mark ronson?

Its pretty amazing how far Pitchfork had come over the years. It used to be one of a few accessible webzines(?) and now its so big (and influential) people hate the site because of it does what it does so well.

Am I the only one who has never heard of this guy?

Pitchfork used to be awesome and my go-to place for emusic reviews, but for about the past year or so, I've thought pretty much everything they've said has been crap. I can't tell if they've actually gone downhill or as I've gotten older, my tolerance for bloviating crap has waned.

I became suspicious of Pitchspoon when they gave Justin Timberlake an 8.1. After that, I take everything they say with a grain of salt.
Score = 0
Their unquestioned love for hand-picked favorites "created" by them just to show how influential they are (and Joanna Newsom), followed by their "we can make you, we can destroy you" attitude makes everything Pitchfork says irrelevant.

I don't know who Mark Ronson is, but he's cute and I'd like to know him in the biblical sense.

Pitchfork make me physically ill.

Mark Ronson's cover of "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" is atrocious. As far as I'm concerned only one Smiths cover has ever eclipsed the original and that's The Tree People's grungy take on "Bigmouth Strikes Again." Yep, that's Doug Martsch, pre-built to spill rockin' out
You wanna hear it?

^ Colonel, go search for Matteo Scumaci's version of that Smiths track, really good.
Score = 0
OH MY GOD!!! I saw Matteo Scumaci play at a gig the on Tuesday and can't believe that we are still banging on about Amy Winehouse and suchlike when there are REAL true geniuses in this world like this guy.......talk about covering bigmouth - just go to his myspace where he has everything up available for you to stream:
www.myspace.com/tayscumaci.com
I bought his debut album that night, and he told me that he handmade each and every one. He also wrote, recorded and produced this himself in his bedroom. Prepare to find your next fave artist!!!!
You can thank me later.

Oh NOZ! Someone in Pitchfork hates Amy Winehouse while Mark Ronson likes her, they must therefore be a faulty publication!!!1!1
I mean, say what you will about the at-times poor writing and perhaps overreaching social power of Pitchfork... they aren't this popular for no reason at all. They often show that they have fairly honed tastes and they work hard. Get over it, it's not like they've boxed out competition, there's plenty of contrary opinion to be found on the internet and elsewhere. I can't possibly believe they're so awful they deserve to be shit on every other day in some random forum or blog comment field... lets get constructive people. :-)

I agree with the raves for Version (Ronson's new Record). I love his take on Ryan Adams' Amy as well as the track featuring Amy Winehouse, Valerie.Ronson does a great job recreating a vintage sound. As for as all the hating on Pitchfork...if you don't like it, don't read it...boy that was tough.

Mark Ronson is the sexiest man on earth.
(that is a purely superficial comment and doesn't
reflect his musical prowess in any way)

Wait, since when is Pitchfork a "serious music site"??

"For many a scenester on this side of the Atlantic, 'it' is cool if Pitchfork says so."
A nation of Arcade Fire and Bright Eyes fans, nervously clutch the seat of their chairs, eyes darting side to side, hoping no one will notice their presence. Die preppy hipster poseurs, die.

There seems to be two different Evans posting with two contrasting opinions on Amy Winehouse.
Back to Black is an amazing record, and it has not been as negatively panned as that news article would lead you to believe. (81 on Metacritic last I checked)
Seriously if no one knew about her tatoos and bitchy public demeanor and rampant alcoholism people would be calling her the savior of soul. Almost all her songs are incessantly catchy and pack an emotional punch I haven´t heard in a while. The production from Mr. Ronson and Saleem raimi r however you pronounce it sounds like it could be right out of the 1950s. Even Pitchfork came around a bit and gave the album a 6.4. Her voice is amazing, no question.
It should be all about the music, people!!!

Amy Winehouse is wonderful.
Pitchfork can sometimes be bitchy, but that's why i like it.
dissing Pitchfork can in some circles be perceived as being ultra-hip.
just listen to what you love.

Amy Phillips has no idea what the fuck she is talking about!!!!! She gave The raconteurs a horrible lolla show review. I was there and that was the tightest, most rock and roll shit of the whole weekend..Go fuck yourself Amy! u too pitchfork
