Courtney Love, one of rock's great OG bloggers, posted another brilliant (not brilliant) open letter on MySpace. In it she accuses fellow blogger/musician Ryan Adams of using $858,000 of Frances Bean Cobain's money to fund his 2003 album Rock n Roll, "one of the worst records i can think of in rock and roll history." Ryan's gear, hotels, drugs, dinners at Nobu ... all expensed to Courtney, stolen STRAIGHT OUT OF FRANCES"S TRUST FUND. Courtney has 29 AMEX cards, so it took a few years for her to notice.
Ex-boyfriends Ed Norton, Billy Corgan, and "Gollum" (Jim Barber, who produced Rock n Roll) all get name-checked in the diatribe. (Ryan and Courtney had "very safe sex" too, it is revealed.) A highlight of her overshare:

But i was sitting with some people going thru the 29 american express cards that i didnt know existed that were connected to a few HUNDRED bank accounts,and there were all the bills for Ryan Adams worst record and one of the worst records i can think of in rock and roll history ironically called"Riock and Roll " and it was paid for by ME and mostly by my child.
and when i met Ryan we had a mild little flirtation, why not? but i made the deathly stupid decision to instead of just have very safe sex with him ( hes pretty dirty and man ive been around but im the virgin mary comparitevly) or make friends. no i fucking pimped my useless , ridiculaously terrible loser "Boyfriend" ( who ironically Edward Norton hates no one any more than this fuck and for good reason , yet Edwards OWN business manager put Barber up on West XXth street kitty corner from Edward, Barber could see into Edwards Apartment, and then he had his own Dean and Deluca account and an ABC Carpetand Home account and spent about 250,000 on furniture and another 600,000 dollars on travel, this loser who hasnt had a job since 98 - while Frances didnt have hardly enough to eat and i sure as hell didnt) i pimped Barber onto Ryan,"oooh hes a great producer"- maybe it wasbnt honourable0 i just wanted Barber gone, so maybe i used Ryan to get him gone,

Courtney Love is a lot of things: Untalented is not one of them. Maybe it's just because I'm a crazy woman too, but I think I understand her need to blog about her finances and her messy social life and things that other people keep private. She can't sing about them, and she needs the release.

I actually like the album "Rock 'N Roll." Sure, it's not nearly as good as "Heartbreaker" or "Demolition," but I think it fits as a nice contrast between those two and the succeeding albums as kind of a study on that kind of music-making in a more treble, distorted context. The juxtaposition in Adam's output is one of the things I find most appealing about him as an artist.

I think Rock 'N Roll is one of his best albums. When I first heard it, I thought it was really generic, but the songs all got stuck in my head. I look at the tracklists for some of Ryad's other CDs (especially Gold or Whiskeytown's Strangers Almanac) and I can't think of how some songs go whatsoever.
I think of the album in terms of T. Rex's stuff: Bolan was using a lot of the same material and writing catchy-as-hell songs over and over. It is a solidly rocking album without any exceptions for alt-country whatever, so it alienated audiences, but damn is it good.

Brainsfried has it right... Rock N Roll was made as a sarcastic response to Lost Highway's evaluation of the Love is Hell stuff. They claimed it was too morose and that "it wasn't his best work" so he set out to make a record that would be very accessible almost to a fault. He would engage in conversations on the message board on his own site stating his side in all of it and I think some of his writings ultimately made those message boards go away. Whether you like Rock N Roll or not, I think the point of it is that it was a blatant attempt by Ryan to be a little less Dylan and a little more like the Replacements. He wanted to make a record that sounded "happy". I understand that is a little ironic when you consider the song title "Note to self dont die" but coming from a guy who wrote a set of demo recordings called "the Suicide Handbook" I am not sure whether to take any of it seriously or not.

Rock and Roll was made to appease Lost highway who thought that "Love Is hell" wasn't commercially viable. They released "Love Is Hell" as two separate EPs. (they are now put back together as a single album, with an extended version of the best song Morrissey never wrote, "does anybody Wanna Take Me home" from Rock N Roll). Love is Hell is fantastic, and Rock N Roll has some great moments.
I still think it is a very good album. Ryan has entire unreleased albums that are better than most of Courtney's output. Suicide Handbook for example. Whiskeytown was fantastic, and pretty much every one of his solo albums are excellent.
Courtney should consult an editor and a lawyer before she goes and rants online.

Most of you on here are probably little tweens who love who ever the hll this ryan adams guy is....Mrs. Cobain is one of, if not THE, most talented grunge rocking woman in the world and of all time. See if any of you wanna bes knew anything about the 90's scene (but since you all were probably in diapers you don't) you'd know who Court really is and what she is about. She has her ups and downs but since most of you worship crap like Britney "no-talent" Spears you wouldn't know a real pioneer of female rock if it smacked you in the face. Courtney Love is an awesome, strong woman who has had a tough life and she doesn't need you people who know nothing about her calling her names. In some ways I really wish the media wouldn't report on her anymore because people like you on here have no idea what the 90's were like and what Courtney was like and how she was loved when Kurt was around. Or how she tried to make his fans understand why he took his own life. So you all need to back the off of her because unless you know something, really actually know something about the time she was popular, about her husband and about her music and her life you need to shut your ignorant pie holes. I wouldn't doubt some no talent hack named Ryan Adams stole Frances money. After all why would anyone call themselves Ryan Adams when there is a famous Bryan Adams, obviously because he has no talent and just hopes people will mix his name up with Bryan's and accidentally buy his record.
