Jay Reatard Vs Brooklyn As the wounded one notes via Twitter: "Brooklyn shut up ! most of your bands all suck and you are total wanna bees ! The pains of being boring at heart ....oh it must hurt being so bland." This won't end well.

Doesn't this mean his beef is really with Glasgow?

Wait- what is this in reference to? What has Brooklyn been saying to him, specifically?

Well, at least POBPAH win the album cover war. Oh wait, their music is a lot better, too (but Reatard is fun). Jay's live show is swell, too; one of the guitarist is this fat guy with a huge afro hair thing, and he looks like a muppet when he plays.

Ha. Jay Reatard should just shut up. Seriously, who cares if he doesn't like the Pains of Being Pure at Heart?

But I'm no hater. I think Jay's music is quite clever, and I'm also really digging the Pains of Being Pure at Heart album. A lot. Can't we all just get along?

He does address SOMETHING actually...if we could just figure it out...magazines don't have to die...we could have "Manhattan" instead of 500 Days...

jay reatard isn't getting any bigger (except in waist size)

pains of being pure at heart eclipsed him a while ago, as have many others.

someone should tell him Pains are more of a Manhattan thing anyway...

Good move Jay. There's too much cronyism in indie music these days, this collective action populism is becoming stale. It's healthy to set boundaries and mention the emperor's nudity once in a while.

I'm a huge fan of Jay, but that's pretty lame. I don't think anyone is going to change their opinion about the quality of certain bands, or a whole borough, based on what bands Jay likes or dislikes. So who was that intended for? It just comes off as immature. So you don't like certain bands, does that mean the rest of us aren't allowed to? He also had a blog post a while back tearing down Cut Copy which is pretty ridiculous.

This reminds me of one of one of my cousins who only listens to metal and laughs at everything in my collection. It doesn't matter if it's New Order, Guided By Voices, The Fall, Company Flow, Tom Waits or even Jay Reatard; if it's not metal, it's "pussy shit".

Whatever. I'm sure Mr. Reatard shares a lot more fans with Pains and the rest of the Brooklyn bands than he realizes. Maybe one day he'll broaden his horizons a bit.

Ha! Because singing about stuff that could easily be mistaken for a game of WoW and having album covers that look like Magic Cards is so hard. Next time you see your cuz, tell him you're going to tap blood mountain to cast mastadon which is +8 defense becaues of its crystal skull and pendulous skin.

He actually hates Mastodon, and he's more of an old school Slayer/Morbid Angel/Cannibal Corpse kind of guy, which I can understand and respect.

I have no problem with metal at all, I love it and always have, I just get annoyed by anyone who sticks to one genre of music and disregards the rest.

Just for fun now, my top 5 favorite metal albums:

5. King Diamond - "Abigail"
4. Death - "Symbolic"
3. Mayhem - "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas"
2. Carcass - "Heartwork"
1. Slayer - "Reign In Blood" (duh)

I've interviewed Jay and he's actually very soft-spoken, polite, and intelligent. I think that he plays up the outsider fuck-everyone-else image for publicity, which punk bands have been doing for years anyway. No reason to get upset about it.

Are you really gonna make a big deal everytime a punk rocker has something mean to say. He may never be as popular as some of these brooklyn bands, but I have a lot more respect for him than all the brooklyn trash that will fade away when the trend changes.

Has anyone seen the bill hicks standup where he is screaming "PLAY FROM YOUR FUCKING HEART"

the point is, what is brooklyn and what are brooklyn bands anyway? i mean most of these people started their musical career somewhere else and moved over there maybe cuz' of the convenience? who knows? I mean this is not musical scene, brooklyn is clean and hip and trendy and expensive. certainly this is not the NYC of the Ramones era. believe you me, pretty soon its going to become a band killer to say you are from brooklyn, or at least it should be, because the trend is becoming boring and in a way he's right to pick on TPOBPAH because they are the least original. I don't even think of AC and GB when i think of brooklyn, somehow they've transcended that which makes them great!

finally an artist that indie kids care about is starting to express what I've been saying for a while- Brooklyn is becoming so trendy it hurts and it will feel like post-grunge Seattle very very soon. too many wanna-be bands and fans moving there just to be a part of the "scene". Well, there isn't much of a scene anymore...too many sheep in the way...
I still love the borough (and live there) but magic like the growth of art, music, whatever that happened there can and will happen somewhere else soon. I'm thinking Forest Hills, Queens maybe?

Well, actually the heading and lead in article would fully indicate that this were a PEOPLE story, so what kind of response would you expect? This is a 'hipster' blog and you're here cause you enjoy it. So then why complain?

Jay knows what's up. Compared to a town like Memphis, lots of more "established" places come off as trying too hard to keep up with their own overblown reputations, especially Brooklyn. Memphis isn't neat, trendy or in any way glamorous but the attitude is so great. I sympathize.

Haha, I've never listened to Jay much but I'm quickly becoming a fan based solely on his spot on opinions of other artists. Pains ARE really boring, but at least listenable. His other target, Cut/Copy though is absolutely crap of the highest measure. Recycled techno-pop with an effeminate twist? I liked it better when The Crystal Method did it 15 years ago without sounding like huge pussies.
