Noel Looks At Thom In Anger

Noel likes to talk shit, it's tired, we know. And when his target is Bono (aka the biggest bullseye in rock), it's just predictable. But in lashing out at the U2 do-gooder's global relief efforts, he roped in a Radiohead as well. Via NME:

Thom Yorke sat a piano singing, 'This is fucked up' for half-an-hour. We all know that Mr Yorke.

Who wants to sing the news? No matter how much you sit there twiddling, going, 'We're all doomed,' at the end of the day people will always want to hear you play 'Creep'. Get over it.

It's a sad state of affairs when we're more offended by Noel boiling Radiohead down to "Creep" than by his slam at the band's consciousness raising -- but dammit we're livid.

Oh, Noel. Saying anything to distract people from remembering that his band hasn't released a good album in over ten years.

Radiohead sucks. I'm glad the drunk stuck it to you hipsters and your precious sacred calf.

Call me thick, but I don't see how saying that "at the end of the day people will always want to hear you play 'Creep'" is offensive for Radiohead. It's just the truth. It's like those people that will always want to hear "Wonderwall" when they go see Oasis.

Those songs might not be the pinnacle of their respective musical careers (because they're more than that and we all know it), but those are their most popular hits and probably the songs that made them richer. How is that bad?

So I think Noel is right -- people need to get over it. Radiohead (or Oasis, for that matter) are not the Second Coming. They're good, but that's it.

*shrug*

You know, by posting this attention starved man's words, you are only giving him power and recognition. I would have never heard of Noel's "opinion" had you not posted it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Creep is most Radiohead fans' least favorite song. I get what Noel's saying, but Radiohead sounds pretty different since Creep, whereas Oasis have sorta been the same band for ten years.

Like Peter S. says above, a lot Radiohead fans could care less if they ever hear "Creep" again. On my other hand, most of us loved hearing the dozen or so as-yet-unrecorded songs Radiohead played on last year's tour.

I dunno....I still think Creep is good. I like their new stuff, but I don't get mad when Creep comes on. I wouldn't go yell for it at one of their shows, and I could understand them never wanting to play it again (it's OLD). However, it's not a bad song; it's just much more simplistic than what they do these days.

Least favorite Radiohead song? Coldplay's entire catalog.

it's wierd to see some of you so defensive of Radiohead. Thing is, Thom+gang are actually pop stars. Just because they're constantly trying to shrug that label doesn't mean we should believe them. Noel deserved to be quoted in NME because no one else was stepping up to the plate. Oasis and Radiohead are pretty similar, but while Oasis centered around internal and personal conflict Radiohead still hasn't gotten over their high school dystopian world view.

I mean, what, is Yorke actually an agent of social change? Really? Cuz I remember it was all he could do to say HAIL TO THE THIEF wasn't about anybody in particular. Maybe Radiohead that's fans are defensive, they identify too much.

i love when people (ie: peter - 3rd comment down, and just about every commenter on gawker) misuse the term 'hipster'. listening to radiohead is a far cry from hipsterdom...

...kind of like claiming that anything noel says is relevant anymore. maybe he is rather chuffed (according to nme) that berwick st. is included on the "rockmap" of london, but it's for a record that came out a decade ago, and one on which they have failed to improve upon. meanwhile, thom and company have continued to make intelligent music that matters.

Seems to be a slam at the audience more than anything. Isn't Noel saying, "drunk and stoned yahoos at MSG, don't really give a shit about global eco-politics. So why bother?". That's how I read it. And I hate Noel Gallager.

Creep is to Radiohead as WONDERWALL is to Oasis. I mean, c'mon Noel... at the end of the day the kids just want to hear Wonderwall, not your trivial tirades. Am I right?

I usually love Noel Gallagher's comments because he just gets a rise out of people. But he is treading on thin ice when he calls Radiohead a one hit wonder. First of all that is just not true, second of all most people stopped paying attention to Oasis after Champagne Supernova came out. I think he just can't handle the fact that they are a much more valid band than Oasis at this point.

I think this is rather childish of Noel, singling out Radiohead and Thom. There are plenty of people he could make observations of who do much worse things than try to raise awareness of serious issues. Maybe he's jelous or something.

On a side note, how pathetic are nme for publishing this? That magazine is just a gossip magazine for the hipster types. It's trashy. It's irrelivent. God i hate NME!

To say that no one cares about Oasis anymore is just plain stupid. They still set a ton of records and even more tixx. Noel loves to get a rise out of people and always pushes the envelope one step too far. And it looks like he has succeeded once again by all the idiotic comments above….cheers.

And does anyone still really enjoy listening Hail to the Thief?

well, as a radiohead fan i can say i don't care if they play 'creep' again. it's one of their least interesting songs.

that noted, i love noel's bashing of other stars. it's refreshing in these times of celebrity worship, but i don't get why he's always going after radiohead. i mean, he should stick to bands he's clearly better than, and radiohead don't fall in that group. besides, 'singing the news' might be somewhat dull, but there seems a lot more worthy targets in the entertaining-us-to-death segements of mainstream music than radiohead.

Why would anyone ever get offended by a Gallagher brother? Talking smack is simply what they do. It means virtually nothing. If they say nice things, then it's weird.

And Lyla, I still enjoy Thief. I like Oasis too, but they bore me quite often. Can't say the same for Radiohead, whose new material is the best I've heard in years.

Not that i think Noel fucking Gallagher is in a position to critique bands/anyone, but he has a point.

At least with Radiohead when politics were brought into the song the lyrics were clever or subtle or had something redeeming about them. But has anyone actually heard The Eraser? It's just Thom ranting for an hour with music in the background.

I like Radiohead, a lot actually. But it's idiot Radiohead fans like most of these dimwits above that make me want to dislike them. Noel's spot on right, Thom Yorke's solo album blows. He never called them one-hit wonders, yet somehow you that's what you morons turned this comment into. I love the people that say they haven't done anything in the last 10 years. You obviously, a) haven't heard anything of theirs in the last 10 years, or b) you're a miserable cunt.

Just because someone thinks Noel Gallagher is a miserable cunt who hasn't made any good music in the past ten years (and I HAVE heard ALL of their albums, which follow the same formula: nine tracks of middle of the road or shit songs with stupid rhyming lyrics and... one good song) doesn't mean he/she is a Radiohead apologist.

well atleast radiohead/thom can have a political message in their songs, all oasis can do is make little pop ballads like wonderwall. and yes i realized a bunch of you will look at this and qoute one of their songs that wasnt a hit and was the only one of its kind and probaly then another will do the exact same thing thinkiing that they are important cuz they are saying the exact same thing

Well, we should all agree that for the most part, Gallagher is wrong. While they might accept Creep, most of Radiohead's current fan base are rabid for the albums following Pablo Honey. Folks that still follow Yorke and Co. could care less if he played it.

But the real point here is that Gallagher was just talking, grasping for an insult with validity. If he doesn't want to hear the scaremongering, fine by me. He enjoys fun music without a political message, so let him have it. But Jesus NME, you're obviously just looking to get a rise out of Radioheads. Let's try and keep the peace here, and give page space to those with something real to say.

This noel chump sounds like a noob. I find it funny to see how much self-esteem he lacks. He states outrageous comments about radiohead to pull the audience toward him. The sentence about how people will always want to here "Creep" at the end of the day, false. People that listen to the radio (aka fridge buzz) and hear "Creep" have no idea what the rest of radiohead's songs are like. It's pretty amazing to hear that some people go to the shows just to hear that one song. They'll pay 50 bucks to listen to 5 minutes of live music, and then block out the other 2 hrs. Noel has no respect for Radiohead, and most likely a lot of other bands. He doesn't seem like an open minded kind of guy.

i did. it taught me to respect other artists."

sorry - i didn't know NME would twist my words like that. thom is actually a great singer. i simply meant it's a shame that people always want you to sing your hits and don't wanna hear the latest material you've been struggling to write. i mean, they don't even care about my feelings - they just ask for "wonderwall" again -- even after we've already done three versions of the damn song. i mean, how much is enough?

as for the "only allowed to comment on bands worse than us" -- well, touche. i mean, at least we have a band. so we can't be the next radiohead - it doesn't mean we can't try.

i can do anything i put my mind to. the only thing that's stopped me in the past is a fistfight with liam, or a decent game of sudoku. but that's over now. books like "the seven habits of highly successful people", "dianetics" and "true healing begins long after the bruises are gone" have changed me - i am a new man. i am the walrus. get it? i bring it 360.

anyhoo, thanks to the people who supported me through the years - it means a lot. we sold a lot of albums, played a lot of dates, drank some pints, slept with some decent ladies and did some drugs. most of which were free.

but that doesn't change one thing - for oasis, it was always about the music. just like the beatles. JUST like the beatles, in fact. haha. oh, who am i kidding?

life. it's what happens when you're busy procrastinating. haha. i just made that up. my mind never stops - i'm always creating. it's my gift. thank you for allowing me to share it with you - i am truly blessed for the opportunity.

well... i can't be bothered hanging around chat rooms all day - i got better things to do. i need to go apologize to someone. myself.
