Oasis Have An Opinion On Radiohead's Politics

thumbnail icon: Oasis Have An Opinion On Radiohead's Politics

I know this will shock your lightning, but said Opinion is rather negative. Since blasting Radiohead is currently en vogue, and three makes a trend, here's this bit via Details:

They're [Radiohead] middle-class boys worrying about pushing an envelope somewhere, and all that carbon footprint and all that bollocks. Every time there's a polar bear on his tiptoes on an ice cube in the middle of the Antarctic, you know whose fault that is? Rock stars'. That's their fault. Any time there's food running out somewhere-- 'Let's do a gig. That'll sort it out. Let's do a big fucking gig. Let's fly everybody in from all over the world and pontificate to poor people about how they should be saving the planet.' Go fucking kiss my ass. It's very easy to just say, 'We're going to become difficult now and challenge our audience.' I like my audience. They paid for my swimming pool. I'm not fucking challenging anybody.

Certainly not the first time he's gone after Radiohead, but I think ultimately Noel's still sore about that "Wonderwall" piss take from years back. In more surprising Oasis Have An Opinion news, Mr. Gallagher likes something: Ryan Adams. (It's mutual.)

yeah. helping the less fortunate is so put on. fuck those poor bastards. i want more bentleys.

OASIS IS THE BIGGEST TWAT EVER.
they need to get over themselves and shut their fucking traps.
and most surprisingly to me is that Noel said this! i thought Liam was the leader of all the douchebaggery they decided to piss and moan about.

He has a point actually. He's saying Radiohead has an Al Gore-style hypocrisy problem... "let's do 'save the planet' benefits and talk about how we should conserve and feed poor countries... by spending more money and jet fuel on each event than some of these countries do in a year!" And basically the only thing it accomplishes is all the "activists" can feel good about themselves.

Noel's a douche. There's no denying that. But he's also right.

You might also want to check out http://www.oasisinet.com/Diary.aspx, which is supposedly Noel's tour diary. I say "supposedly," because in the past he's admitted to being dyslexic and a bit of a Luddite when it comes to technology. Not saying he hasn't been able to catch up, but those posts seem a bit too tidy and thought-out to be his own work. Still, whether or not he actually wrote (or dictated) them, they're still pretty hilarious.

Why does it always sound like the two retarded brothers from oasis have to complain about something irrelevant?? "Radiohead makes a point about carbon footprints- that it's challenging. Why does Radiohead want to challenge the poor people?"
Well let me tell you - BECAUSE RICH PEOPLE MAKE UP 2% of the population! The poor people have and will always be the ones to make the changes.
Maybe they need to stop thinking they are so noble. Go back to your roots. Join us poor people or perhaps just try to get back int touch with the poor people. You're not noble.
Maybe thats why they havent wriiten a good record since the 90's.

It appears as though most people don't have the ability to understand what he's saying no matter how simple it is. Go back and read it.

He's saying that it's hypocritical for someone who lives a rich lifestyle like a rockstar to tell everyone else what to do. He's also ripping on musicians because rather than going out into the world and doing work, they just hold concerts and hide behind the "I'm getting the message out" defense. There's too many message deliverers and not enough people acting. Anyway, he doesn't give a shit about the issue, which sucks, but at least he's not claiming to give a shit while he behaves like an ass.

Now, I'm not saying Radiohead deserves this, but there are plenty of bands out there that do. I think that despite being possibly pointed at the wrong people, he still brings up a good point. I mean what do you expect from Noel Gallagher, to publicly praise someone? Stop being so damned insecure about people not liking your favorite band. If you really thought they were good, you wouldn't give a s*** what other people think.

I'm really confused as to what shows the guy's even talking about--it's not like they did Live Earth or any stupid bullshit like that, and in fact when they did "House of Cards" for Conan, they opted not to fly all the way to New York to eschew carbon emissions and taped the performance instead. In addition, I don't know how many Radiohead shows Gallagher has been to recently (or ever), but I've been to 3 in the last year, and not once did they mention anything about global warming. In short, fuck an Oasis.

But it needs to be said that we should try to separate his stupidity from his lack of musical talent--the fact that Oasis' records suck, always have sucked, and always will suck is irrelevant to the invalidity of his poorly-constructed argument. Let's just be fair, is all

So, it follows that if someone makes a negative remark about Radiohead, the reaction will be far more volatile and volumnious than if someone slags some other band.

What's being lost on you idiots is that he's commenting on the absurdity of how wasteful these concerts are and how little they do to make a difference. He's not saying that RADIOHEAD played those specific shows, he's saying their attitude has lead to every rock band on the planet feeling they need to be involved in the recent spate of "awareness" shows. Does a bunch of musicians getting all dolled up for a day out on the town lecturing others about poverty actually fix poverty? All those people at the shows drinking water out of plastic water bottles fight global warming?

Perhaps another quote by Mr. Gallagher should be examined:

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but are they hoping that one of these guys from the G8 is on a quick 15-minute break at Gleneagles and sees Annie Lennox singing "Sweet Dreams" and thinks, 'Fuck me, she might have a point there, you know?' And Keane doing "Somewhere Only We Know" and some Japanese businessman going, 'Aw, look at him… we should really fucking drop that debt, you know.' It's not going to happen, is it?"

Noel's got a point, folks.

And now, some articles from 2006:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2006/jun/30/internationalaidanddevelopment.g8
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1535470/20060629/u2.jhtml

And here's an article from 2007:

http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0403/poor.html

As to the fool above that says Oasis has released the same album over and over, apparently you haven't actually listened to any of their albums. Hell, the first two albums don't even sound alike let alone the 5 since...

And finally, this little gem...

"Perhaps Noel's aversion to rock stars flying to a "big fucking gig" stems from bitterness at the unlikelyhood of his band ever garnering sufficient support outside the UK to justify aerial jaunts of their own."

On their last North American tour, Oasis sold out two nights at the Hollywood Bowl, one night at MSG and one night at the Tweeter Center outside of Boston. That's about 72k people in four shows. Want to tally up the rest of the North American tour? Perhaps Japan? Australia? South America? Get a clue.

It seems to me like Radiohead's status as a band somehow presents them as standing on moral high ground to fans. In criticising Noel, all of you Radiohead-ites seem to prove his point, in that you are siding with Radiohead due to them being rock stars, rather than making your own mind up about the situation. Bringing Noel's success as an artist into the debate corrupts the whole thing, diverting from the matter at hand, again proving that celebrity is what really matters to you people. I don't get why Stereogum does this, posting anything someone says against Radiohead, just so that said person can get mocked and scorned for having their own point of view.

It must hurt when another band releases an album for "pay what you like" and makes more money than you when you sell it for $15. The real difference between oasis and radiohead is talent. radiohead is a group of amazing musicians that are able to constantly reinvent themselves and push the boundaries of conventional music, whereas oasis... has wonderwall. Congrats Liam and Noel on being the crappiest band to not have released a good track in 10 years, but somehow managing to stay in the news. Rock on!

Through this post, I think I read the word "Radiohead" enough since last hearing their music to realize how dumb a name it is, but I digress.

It's clear that Noel was just trying to make a point about the environmental hypocrisy of holding a large festival to raise awareness, but first I guess he decided to take a dig at Radiohead because him and his brother are a petty pair of tits. I agree with his point (although, it's definitely not an original one), but Radiohead don't deserve that kind of criticism. As someone else said, they did tape their performance for the environmental Conan show and they've never had anything to do with those big, ridiculous festivals. They do essentially the same thing that Oasis do, but they have an unrelated environmental agenda, and apparently there's something wrong with that.

Oasis are pretty much Britney Spears. No one has heard their music in years, but they're still famous because of the press. The only difference is that Oasis have to find attention by taking unnecessary shots at other bands or undermining an entire genre of music (like the Glastonbury incident). Stereogum, you need to realize that you're perpetuating fame that people don't deserve. A couple years back, I thought this blog was better than a tabloid rag.

Oasis, the combined members, have slightly less talent than what could be found in 1 ounce of Thom Yorke's ball sweat. I don't think Radiohead gives a shite about what a broken record is saying. Much less, a crowd of idiots that don't know good music when they hear it.
RADIOHEAD = Millionaires yes, though still, at the least, trying to voice social and eco injustice - while reinventing their music and addressing the amount of waste associated with the major touring industry.
OASIS = Bitching about RADIOHEAD from their swimming pool - worried about the large amount of WASTE at their shows - though puzzled by the lack of people.

If you like the song, "Wonderwall" - you'll love everything else by OASIS!

Leave everything about the bands in question music/albums to the side for a moment.

i think we can all appreciate that being cynical is part of being a musical artist in the first place, but why must NG's attitude towards RH trying to raise environmental awareness be so negative? What does that accomplish? He seems to be proud of the fact that he doesn't care about anything, that he or his band aren't interested in branching out in any way. i doubt you signed a contract that said you can only write music and that's it, Noel. The point about trying to turn around the disaster we've laid on our ecosystem is that it takes all of us. RH reaches a wide audience and people listen to them, so why not mention it? They aren't forcing anyone to plant a tree to buy in rainbows, they're just suggesting it.

i, for one, have no problem with that. If oasis wants to suggest people should spray until empty a couple of aerosol cans just to prove how little you care before buying their next album then so be it, he's free to do so. For everyone that says he "has a point," what exactly IS his point? i'm interested in what useful information anyone is getting out of him here.

And as partial as i'd like to be here, his comments seem to be oozing jealousy.

I love Radiohead, but it is true that waving the flag is not enough - and barely works - for generating change.
Preaching Non Corporate thinking but charging $1M per show is kind of incoherent, along with using more voltage than a small African country in their live shows.
I give it to Noel for honesty.

waving a flag is good for a change. its better than wallowing in the shit! i think the negative ones are Noel, Oasis and his uneducated fans. also, saying Radiohead charge 1million a gig is absurd. when and were did this happen. they charge there fans. and we pay. whats wrong with that? they are the best band in the world. And for using more voltage than a small african village. radiohead began that change 5 years ago by using LED lights..the lowest voltage you can get. when you have 35000 poeple at a show you have to have some sorta video screen to project the awesomeness of radiohead...or you're not gonna see anything...too many people!!
so i really dont see any honesty from noel. just stupidity. like honestly do polar bears live in the antarctic? NO! its the north pole...not the south....stupidity ..not honesty....tell me were is his honesty....he's stupid!!!!!!!

If anybody saw the South Park episode where the hippies stage a peace jam fest they would understand the Man's comments ("let's address the world's problems with this tasty groove"). Sure he's an ass but it doesn't mean what he says is not true. I love Radiohead AND Oasis. They're totally different bands and should never be compared directly because the comparison doesn't apply. It would be like comparing Grieg to Schoenberg (classical). One is drawing it's inspiration from great music from the past (I do this as well and have been criticized for it) while the other is pushing for something new. Streets

everyone has their opinions and I do agree with Noel in the fact that I think its bogus to make things hard for your fans. Noel makes valid points of relevency and I love the fact that he has the balls to speak his mind as they are opinions and can be taken or left alone. Note: Radiohead did not have more fame than Oasis I'm sorry to say but both groups I truly enjoy no less.

I agree 100% with Mr. Gallagher. Spare me the lectures, entertain me and enjoy your success. If you want to make a difference, get a real job.

ahhhh...but you see how is radiohead lecturing us?? they're never preaching at there shows. i think noel should stop preaching. preaching people to be morons.
Hey oasis! How about you go home, do some blow, watch footballs worst hooligans, then go to the pub, get into a fight and have your teeth knocked out, then go on tour for a bit to make some money, wait for a fan to push you off the stage, and call it an year. sound good. ohhhh....wait...you've done that already. hmmmmm...maybe we shouldnt listen to an idiot like you. you seem extremely stupid. prehaps an idiot-savant. i'll make an eduacated guess and assume you're extremely stupid.

cause if you were smart you'd stop! stop with the music, its recycled. its boring.it doesnt rock anymore.

this is a very funny thread ... reality is they don't like each other very much to begin with - never did - though oasis really took the world by storm in their day ... & yes, thom has been nasty to noel - shit one of their best acoustic covers (radiohead) is wonderwall - though it is sung in a bit of an ironic tone ... "waterwall" - get over it - it's great to see cat fights among prissy rock stars - that is what the fan pay for - which is, of course, noel's entire point - the new oasis album is actually quite good, fwiw -

I'm a fan of both bands, but being sincere, Radiohead is million years beyond Oasis

Haha! Radiohead better than Oasis? There's a reason why Oasis consistently top 'best of' lists ahead of Radiohead. Radiohead fans are incredibly jealous of Oasis' success.
