Portishead Insult, Apologize To Danger Mouse

On Monday, Geoff Barrow blogged on Portishead's MySpace: "id rather poo in my mums suday roast than have danger mouse produce a portishead record............no offence like."

Yesterday, he sobered up: "just to let you know after my rants the other day that were reported about a certain producer. i dont rate myself better or above anyone else. it was purely in responce to a message that suggested he should produce our album and also to be honest im a grumpy old fuck who hates everything. cheers."

Apparently, Tony Blair is still a wanker and a liar though.

NME.com's practically Celebrity Deathmatch UK these days, innit?

PREVIOUSLY: Kasabian Vs Rolling Stones, Lily Allen Vs Libertines, Boy George Vs Elton John, Etc...

so is this what musicians are into these days? first brandon flowers and his emo comments, then kasabian and their shot at rolling stones. who would've thought lashing out at fellow artists (wrongfully thinking you actually have the power to) would become such a trend?

The internet is a place for people to rant (gasp!). A little honest stream of consciousness can be more refreshing and amusing than self-censored restraint, especially in this day and age of "omg don't offend anyone!"

If Dangermouse had been brought on to produce the next Portishead record, at least there would BE a new Portishead record. It would be pretty dull, but it would be out there. Dangermouse isn't one of my favorite producers, but I must admit: he is PROLIFIC.

I can see why P-head is being careful about whatever they are working on, though. It's been a long time since their last release and, since then, the musical genre they represented has damn near fallen off the face of the earth. Even so, there's enough talent there that I expect they will eventually pull out something great.

Dangermouse would be a terrible choice to produce. His style (big, orchestral, glitchy) could not be any more different than that of Portishead (stark, gloomy, seductive)that that clash does not sound good on paper at all. Barrow is absolutely right to react to that suggestion with ire.
But Dangermouse is not a dull producer. Well he can be (Dangerdoom, most of the Grey Album) but anyone who hates on Demon Days and St. Elsewhere is too hip for their own good. Barrow must really be a grumpy old man that hates everything if he can't stand Gnarls Barkley/ Danger Mouse. Because how many artists can we think of that are so much more deserving of that hate? Am I right?

Portishead, just record your album. Please. It has been far too long. Use George Martin as a producer, Mutt Lange, whoever the fuck. Just get it out there.

Brian/DM has been a Portishead fan for years and I think he was just talking about dream projects. He gave my sister a copy of the live record when he was an RA in her dorm, I think! A pity that Barrow was such a jerk about it. He could have just politely declined.

I think Demon Days is supremely underrated.

Ah yes, because Geoff's production on McKay made that such a best selling record... oh wait..

I love Portishead but I haven't heard anything he's done that I like.
