Sex Pistol Hates Everyone

From Sunday's New York Post:

Steve Jones says today's crop of radio-ready "punk" bands make him sick to his stomach. Jones, now a popular L.A. deejay who was recently hired as Stuff magazine's music editor, tells the macho monthly: "Knuckleheads like Simple Plan and Good Charlotte are told what to do, and they do it, you know? It's a shame that they're disguising it under the word 'punk.' It's a bunch of fucking shit, you know?" The ornery ax-man also says he hates Coldplay and he finds singer Chris Martin "pretentious and obnoxious." He has no love for angst-ridden rockers like Linkin Park and Sum 41, either. "The vocals are what really get on my nerves," Jones says. "They're singing about emotions, crying and getting in touch with your feelings - that is not rock 'n' roll, man."
Wait until he hears about the new Moby album. In related news, Peter Murphy wants My Chemical Romance to know that if you sell $50 XXL hoodies at Hot Topic, your band's not goth. And George Jones wants Rick Moranis to go back under whatever fucking rock he crawled out from!

He's right, of course, but The Sex Pistols were hardly a model of conviction. They were completely invented and managed. They were just forthright and unapologetic about it.

Wake me up when Joe Strummer has something to say on the subject.

I agree with pretty much everything he says.

My hatred for Linkin Park and Good Charlotte know no bounds (which sucks, because GC are from around here and I like give bands from around MD the benefit of the doubt).

the best description of what passes for punk these days was "speeded-up hair metal".

Billy K is spot on. Hard to take Jones seriously when Sex Pistols were the Good Charlotte of the 70s, more or less.

Yeah, it's all well and good to hear what he hates, but . . . is there any bands out there now that he LIKES? I'm far more interested in hearing about bands that are good and I've potentially never heard yet than (admittedly justified) bombardments of popular music.

Evan: McLaren was nothing like the producers behind such craptacular bands as G.Charlotte. Where the talentless hoards are raking in the cash from the midless proles, the Sex Pistols were never so successful. Hardly the result of expert, soulless marketing techniques promoting shite. Many bands wouldn't have the output or have made the splash they did without a producer that knew how to take a good, new sound into new places.

**Yeah, it's all well and good to hear what he hates, but . . . is there any bands out there now that he LIKES?**

Yeah, he plays a lot of new stuff on his show, like Diamond Knights and The Prix.

On his show, Jonesy only plays what he likes. Newer bands that have gotten a lot of play lately are Arctic Monkeys, Giant Drag, The 88, New Pornographers, Redwalls, Tsar.

How come no one touches on the number of fat little whiny emo kids that require $50 XXXL My chemical romance sweatshirts? I propose a study comparing that music to McDonalds. Obviuously neither do you any good. SHouldn't the CD's come with a label or something?

Hey, wasn't it actually Chris Spedding playing guitar on the Sex Pistols album? No matter, Jones' radio show is the shit! Great guests and music you won't hear anywhere else. Always a laugh or two as well. Stream it on the web.

Who cares?! Punk is maybe dead but music is different nowdays. Get over it, people.

Sum 41 said they weren't a punk band. What is more of a problem than bands claiming to be punk, is record companies and fans claiming the bands they like or manage are punk.

Besides, who the hell cares? Music changes. For better or for worse, that depends on the person. Rock now doesn't sound the same as in the fifties, but is it still rock? Yes.

I agree with Maria, you all need to get over it. Stop acting like a bunch of whiny bitches.

i'd rather listen to a band with musical talent then a bunch of guys who just make noise (the sex pistols). sid vicious couldn't even play bass! don't get me wrong, i like the sex pistols, they were original and revolutionary, but, i think it is ignorant to say a band isnt good. i agree, simple plan lacks balls, and good charlotte is very poppy (i dont mind them too much), but there is no way sum41 falls into the same crowd with these bands. they have great musical talent. they really dont sing any angsty songs... most of their songs are about getting drunk and war.and dave is a kick ass guitarist, so i think Mr. Jones is just mad.

I have to agree with mike..about the making a bunch of noise but i like the sex pistols to but u should shutup and stop dissing other bands SIMPLE PLAN SUCK but the lead singer is hot.
GOOD CHARLOTTE are my FAVORITE band on earth they can accually SING and play good music.

Sex Pistols were and are nothing without sid

You guys are full of crap. The Pistols were a great band and Jones is right, the crap that's popular today is as bad as the Bay City Rollers. And for the love of God, the Pistols weren't manufactored by Maclaren, there's no excuse for saying ignorant crap like that. Read a book about the Pistols. Read Rotten's book. Read Matlock's book. And to the guy who said the Pistol's are nothing without Sid, come the hell on. The guy looked cool. That's all he did.
