Alice Cooper Thinks Vampire Weekend Have No Balls

thubmnail icon: Alice Cooper Thinks Vampire Weekend Have No Balls

The makeup-wearing senior citizen with the girl's name and 7 handicap is not a fan of Upper West Side Soweto. Alice asks Noisecreep, "Are all American bands metro-sexual now? I heard the title Vampire Weekend and I thought, 'Oh, man, that's gonna be great. I gotta see it. And there are these guys with little Gap T-shirts on and I'm going, 'What happened to the balls in rock 'n' roll? Why are American bands so wimpy?'"

He thought they were real vampires. Honest mistake.

Honest mistake, really. Somewhere a wannabe goth band cried because they didn't think of it first.

Now, someone please mail him a copy of a Grizzly Bear Cd!

I think the world has long realized machismo sucks, so there's no point in showcasing how manly you are.

I would think someone as androgynous as Alice Cooper would understand that since he basically proved that it's okay for a guy to wear eyeliner.

I'll start by saying I'm not a fan of Vampire Weekend, never was. They are a bit too simple and soft for me.
I'm sure we can all agree their SOUND isn't as aggressive as Cooper's was/is (for his day, especially). VP don't rock.
But there's something a lot more honest, real, and shit- let's use the word "ballzier" about playing music like that if it's true to you...the biggest pussies in the music world are the ones that need to wear makeup and be pictured with chains, bats, fake blood, (insert other holloween costume gimmick facade BS) to make them feel and appear tough and mean.
Same thing goes for hip hop- all the clowns that latch on to the ridiculous chains, rims, guns, etc are trying to make up for what they may be lacking...like an authentic passion for the music and vision...and probably the courage to be different, as well. ...For this, the part of Vampire Weekend may be played by People Under the Stairs...
I assume "Vampire" in the band's name refers to a long weekend of being out all night or something. It's called using your brain, Alice.

Vampire Weekend is a reference to a short film made by Ezra Koenig. "Walcott" is loosely based on getting back from Cape Cod after it has been overrun by vampires. Here is a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmj241Plef4 (it also features Wes Miles of Ra Ra Riot)

they may have gotten their name from that unifinished movie but it surely evokes more thinking than just being a literal nod to what the band is like or interested in...i mean, not much about them says vampire...
as opposed to a band called..oh, i dunno...Cannibal Corpse or something

Sample lyrics. "Oh Bryn! You see through the dark / Right past the fireflies that sleep in my heart"

"Then I see you -- you're walking cross the campus / Cruel professor, studying romances / How am I supposed to pretend / I never want to see you again?

"Johanna drove slowly into the city; The Hudson River all filled with snow"

Alice has a point. But, uh, we all kind of knew this already.

i am not a vampire weekend fan by any stretch of the imagination, but at least they are writing things relevant to themselves and thier lives. not, "i'm 18, gotta get away" and "school's out for summer" (when he was in his mid 20's). that said, i respect alice cooper, and his turkey neck makes me laugh.

There are still macho rock bands out, just no one I know worth mentioning. I'd rather see more indie bands play pre-rock styles like blues, jazz, and vauldeville, we cannot survive on Tom Waits forever. Also, more hardcore revivelists would be interesting.

Vampire Weekend is not a band that pretends to be bad-ass. They proudly own up to their brand of Oxford rock, so it's not fair to pick on them. However, I do agree that their name is greatly misleading, so anyone who looks at their name on a marquee without knowing who the band is will think they're a goth metal type of band and be sorely disappointed when they see them live or hear their music (I was one of them, lol). But if Alice wants to go after a band with "no balls", I say go after My Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy.

Alice is picking a big fight here. His problem is clearly not with Vampire Weekend, but rather with Gap T-Shirts. I'd like to ask him, what the fucks wrong with a real soft t-shirt? Clearly Alice Cooper likes a scratchy t-shirt.

When I first heard of them, I thought they were some synth pop crap. And connected "Vampire Weekend" with a weekend-long partying spree. Honest.

It's the same way "A Place To Bury Strangers" sounded like screamo to me.

I guess it's some kind of good sign that even though Alice Cooper had more of a career, and did more daring shit than any of his detractors on this page -- including the author -- they are free to take potshots at a pioneer. Freedom of speech and all that. But the sound they make is the same sound their minor-league whiner predecessors made in Alice's heyday because he was too punk. Same bitches, different era. Congrats.

They don't try to be "macho" per say, but if you're looking to fill a harder, louder, noisier, bassier void in your indie rock heart- check out the band 65daysofstatic. No lyrics, no bullshit, just a some dirty guitars, a badass drummer, ball-shaking sub bass, smart samples galore, and airy synth atmospheric beauty.
No, I don't work for the band. I just think they deserve more attention.

To Sam Bryant:

Mainstream rock has indeed lost its edge. However there are some bands out there that blow you away still. It's just harder to find in a crowded field of myspace tastes of the week, pitchfork hype bands, and the graceless last tremors of the major labels.

If you truly think rock's lost its edge, go see the Dillinger Escape Plan in a very intimate club. The edge is still there. Or listen to Mastodon, or Coliseum, or Fucked Up, or Get Rad. The list goes one, they’re just harder to find.

Vampire Weekend is really safe and precious but really doesn't push anything anywhere. They're boring and bad live. All the shit talkers on this board should gie Alice some respect, he was pushing boundaries and blazing trails in music before you were making your mom sick in the morning.

Although there is some hypocrisy in what he's saying, I think young indie-rockers should atleast try to take it to heart. AC had been around a long time and deserves a little bit of creedance. B/c it's true, there's just not alot of great balls-out RAWK these days among the music-loving types. It's lots of dancy beats, headnodding, emotional stuff alot of which is really good, but you shouldn't just associate sweaty rock with Kid Rock and Nickelback. Like, Queens of the Stone Age should be revered in some ways like a Radiohead even (did I just say that? Yes, yes I did) but they're not, and the young indie-rockers should know that ballsy bearded rock can be done well and done intelligently and doesn't need to be looked down upon. Let's start a new genre, indie-cock!
