Arctic Monkeys Sling Shite At Radio 1, Hip Hop, Mark Ronson

The press tour is shifting into high gear for Arctic Monkeys, getting closer to unleashing their Favourite Worst Nightmare on fans excited by the killer first single "Brianstorm" (that includes us, though second leaked track "505" isn't quite as exciting) -- and there's no better way to draw some ears than by berating the station that supports you. Guitarist Jamie Cook started the shitstorm during the A'Monks interview with The Sun, and Alex was there for verbal support:

JAMIE COOK: English radio is terrible, and Radio 1 plays a lot of crap music. I realised that the other morning when I had the radio going. Even music I don’t usually listen to, like hip-hop, is obviously bad at the moment. There is no real hip-hop anymore.

ALEX TURNER: Timbaland is in every video. He is just standing there, looking confused.

JAMIE COOK: All right, he’s a good producer, but he’s in every song right now. Come on, there are other producers — and other beats.

ALEX TURNER: Still, what he does is good. I hate all those Pop Idol singers. And let me tell you what I can’t stand — that f****** R’n’B cover version of "Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before.”

Pop Idol, fine. British radio, can't weigh in. But are we listening to the same Smiths cover? Ronson and Daniel Merriweather's "Stop Me" is so awesome! (Hear it at MySpace.) Dig the eight-bar outro flip to the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On." That track is on constant repeat at Stereogum HQ, along with the rest of Ronson's Version. Just 'cause the horns sorta swing and the guitars don't spike don't mean it ain't ace, Alex. We're sure that "Stop Me" and "Brianstorm" being released within the same week has nothing to do with it.

The Monkeys are such mouthy little cunts. Why do they feel the need to slag off other artists? It's all rather pathetic.

Have to agree Stereogum, the Ronson cover is ridiculously good.

I do not understand why people love the Arctic Monkeys. There is nothing the least bit interesting about their music or songwriting. It sounds like every NYC band sounded about 4 years ago. Nothing distinctive about it.

I like their "Certain Romance" song, although I would have entirely cut out that dull rock intro in it.

Not feeling the Smiths cover. It sounds like bad gay house to these ears- vocally anyway. He also does the irritating "if I singing bluesy variations on the melody instead of the melody, it's a new interpretation". Misguided.

he's right about hip hop, too. It hasn't been any good since 1991.

Yeah, I don't rate that Smiths cover either.

There's good hip hop out there though, you just gotta look for it.

Ronson's album sucks. Guy shoulda stopped after remaking "Just".

All English tunes though - see how fast you'd come bitching if a UK producer started doing crappy soul covers of Replacements and Husker Du tunes... yeah, right.

I'm no fan of the Arctic Monkeys, and they're certainly not the ones that should be throwing insults around. Nevertheless i gotta agree with them on the Ronson song. It's a showy piece of crap that offers no improvement. But i do like that it is at least different. Too many cover songs are just reiterations that serve no real other purpose than vanity or a shout-out.

Are they stupid? Surely they must realise they're just offending themselves by saying shit about the radio. They're who I'm always having to change the station because of. There's nothing but them playing on the radio and tv, and it's extremely annoying.
However, I do feel this is the idiots version of what Oasis used to when they had a new record coming out.
Really hope it falls back on them and BBC Radio puts a ban on playing their stuff. Although radio isn't the strongest at the moment, it'd be nice to not have them playing and hopefully other stations would follow suit.

I don't think that Mark Ronson tune is bad, but I prefer some of his other stuff, like the 'God put a smile upon my face' cover.

I find it amusing that the Monkeys are bitin' the hand that feeds them. Seeing as they're pure shit.

And what's with the Liam Gallagher stunt? "Ooh I'm such a motherfucking badass cause I diss mainstream pop culture."

Wow, I never even heard about this. Anyway, I'm still in the charts through hard work. I'm not a myspace fad on its last legs either. But I don't mind a bunch of gormless twats berating me, it was over a year ago after all. A certain similar moron recently made comments about me since his band were releasing an album. I can deal with it, but while we're slinging mud. Let me list a few words synonymous with the 'Lethargic Monkees'. Bland, synti voiced, boring, samey, unimportant, lazy, let us not forget acne. They're just utter bile. Their songs are aimed towards utter twats, music by twats for twats. :D (Oh and Alexa is just using you to get her face in the 3am section of The Mirror and other such crappy mediums, you polio ridden lout.)
