Nothing Compares 2 Spitting On Prince

This just made our day. Years after spinning "Nothing Compares 2 U" into a name-making classic, Sinead O'Connor dishes the details on her fiery meeting with the Artist. Via MSNBC:

"At the time he had a lot of female proteges and I had covered his song ["Nothing Compares 2 U"] without having anything to do with him," O'Connor told the London Mirror. "He invited me to his house in Los Angeles and started to give out to me for swearing in interviews. When I told him to go [bleep] himself he got very upset and became quite threatening, physically. I ended up having to escape." But, objected the paper, "he’s such a small guy." Replied O’Connor: "He can pack a punch. A few blows were exchanged. All I could do was spit. I spat on him quite a bit."
Love Prince, but her cover is untouchable. Sounds like the purple one was seeing green, sure, but damn if she doesn't hold a grudge. Couldn't they just have settled it like rational adults -- i.e., on the basketball court?

I've never bought this story either, particularly because at the time this meeting was supposed to have taken place, Prince was swearing like a sailor ("Sexy MF" anyone?)

Prince played "Nothing Compares 2 U" on his 2004 tour, and it stomped all over Sinead's version.

Sinead has always struck me as being slightly unhinged, like she's treading a dangerous line between madness & sanity. Every time I see an interview with her I'm waiting with bated breath for the moment she snaps and kills the interviewer.

but could sinead do an awesome cover of a random foo fighters song for seemingly no reason at the super bowl? didn't think so. shut up, sinead.

Has stereogum turned into some sort of bizarre celebrity news source?

If so, I'm all for it!

Seriously...Sinead and prince have to be two of the strangest people on the planet.

who really cares? Prince is kinda cool, Purple Rain was good anyway. Sinead is a has been, if she even had anything to begin with.

I call bullshit.

But then again, I'd drink Prince's bathwater

Price is a God amongst mortal men. His guitar heroics are nearly untouchable amongst anyone else walking the earth today. And 07/07/07, while the rest of you are watching The Black Eyed Peas on LiveEarth, I will be rocking with Prince at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Rock.

i really do love the sinead cover of "nc2u" (it's certainly miles ahead of the original arrangement/performance done by a prince side-project called the family).

but a couple things strike me as very strange about this "beef"...
1) as someone already mentioned, when this was said to have taken place, Prince was still pre-conversion to JW. he was cussin' like a trucker.

2) they're both eccentric. but sinead is clearly confrontational and quite often, misguidedly so. prince will dunk on you, but i have a hard time believing he'd swing on anyone, let alone a woman. left to pure speculation based on past history, i'd guess she was the aggressor not the aggressee.

3) how many other songs has prince written or ghost-written and given away? "manic monday", anyone? you think he's REALLY jealous of her success with this one song? REALLY? then...

4) compare the lists of #1 singles, and albums sold. 'nuff said.

that all notwithstanding, it's been at least a decade since either of them could be considered "relevant"...

It was a really stupid thing to tell Sinead O'Conner that "he is such a small guy." She is tiny, she has big owl eyes but she weights like 90 pounds soaking wet.
