Win An XBox 360 From Thrice & Stereogum
Any Thrice fans out there? Well, one of you is about to become one. The band's got a new album Vheissu coming out and asked us if we wanted to promote it with a contest in which a Stereogum reader wins an XBox 360. How could we say no to that? One of you deserves to be hooked up with a free XBox, right? So click here to enter ... and good luck!

first post bitches...gimmie that X box.

i'll take the xbox. but i still probably won't like thrice.
Score = 0
i need a new video ipod, give me the xbox so i can sell it and buy that ipod.
Score = 0
how much are they paying you for this shill? shouldn't the advertisements go in the column on the right?
Score = 0
> how much are they paying you for this shill?
Nothing -- we don't get paid for contests. We do it to reward the readers.
Score = 0
i new stereogum sold out...thrice????????? i want some wolf parade news.
Score = 0
aw hell, hows a bout a contest for us canadians??
Score = 0
"We do it to reward the readers." That's a bunch of patronizing horseshit. You're lending whatever cred this blog has (which, by virtue of posts like this, is in rapid decline) to a dimwitted band's already million-selling label. That quote is, in corporate terms, called a "turn-around," in other words, taking the oh-so-obvious reality and spinning it on its ear, attempting to use the opportunity to entrench yourself in the good graces of the public at the same time. It's slick, but silly. Politicians do it all the time, and it's just as transparent.
If Stereogum really wanted to "reward" its readers, they wouldn't make them participate in a thinly veiled marketing scheme for Island while running fruitlessly toward an XBox while Thrice plays through an embedded media player. C'mon. I'd like to assume that the average Stereogum reader is a bit more savvy than to fall for that load of shit. If Stereogum really wanted to reward its readers, they wouldn't punish them with content such as this.
I've officially stopped taking anything this site says about music with anything but a grain of mass-marketed salt.
Score = 0
If something like that actually gets you that upset, last poster, man, you must have some life.
Score = 0
I wouldn't say it annoyed me, per se, but I suppose I had more faith in this site not to lamely attempt to disguise an ad as a post. Nothing more than that. Okay, it annoyed me. But only because Stereogum has been so great in the past, with the ads easily ignorable on the right side.
I suppose I still hold out hope for the blog world--not to wholly succumb to the same corporate pressures as so much of the rest of the online community. It's okay, really, we need all kinds--I just wish the ownership would be a bit more forthright about the affair.
I do have "some life," actually--I'll leave the irony of a fellow commenter posting about the spare time of another to wither in cyberspace.
Score = 0
It's typical of those with nothing to say to offer the ultra-lame comment of "get a life." How about contributing something to a conversation? Tell me I'm wrong, agree with me, but graduate from fourth grade, please.
Score = 0
Look, i'm all for contests, but i want contests for good bands like wolf parade. Posting a contest for a lame ass band like thrice is a joke. It lowers the quality of the blog...it makes its readers look like morons and it wastes our precious hip time. We should be discussing wolf parade or clap your hands say yeah, instead we are talking about thrice and and an x box...this means the terrorists have won and it's a sad day for stereogum.
Score = 0
Fair enough --
I'll leave it up to you guys. If you only want giveaways from cool bands, we can limit 'em.
Score = 0
As a faithful reader, I can understand both perspectives on this. I like a good contest as much as the next guy, and I think it's nice to offer something as fancy as a 360 to Stereogum readers. As for 'annoyed', if you smell the taint of big business I think it's understandable to the average reader here as to why you can see that as a compromise. Still, From the sounds of it, the contest was offered out of good intentions and that counts for a lot.
Anyways, all that was sunk when I realized I couldn't enter as a Canadian. I shed a tear into my maple syrup.

I want a wolf parade casio keyboard give away, get on that one scott...

ad wizard #1 - "We need new ways of marketing, kids aren't watching Music Television anymore."
ad wizard #2 - "Kids don't have an attention span, they BLOG now."
ad wizard #1 - "Search out these so-called blogs and fill them with XBOX 360's and THRICE t-shirts"
that's why you will learn to love Island Records, Thrice, Jim Croce, Microsoft and those Nick Drake re-issues.
Score = 0
man, it totally ruinned my nothing life to see a link to a contest
Score = 0
The real issue is the lameness of thrice...its not the corporate give away per se. If a cool band was giving away something we'd be on that shit so fast.
Like an animal collective x box. I'd be on that shit.
Score = 0
that contest makes NO sense.
the fields include "Country" (where US and Canada are both at the top) and "Zip/Postal Code," so I naturally assume a Newfoundlander like me is eligible. i click "Submit."
denied.
Score = 0
"If you only want giveaways from cool bands, we can limit 'em..."
"Cool bands," eh? Wait a minute, who are they? Oh, yeah, the ones that DON'T HAVE TO GIVE AWAY THINGS TO GET NOTICED.
My throat hurts.
Score = 0
boo urns. us only. good luck somebody! doesn't matter, thrice or rice, just as nice
Score = 0
Thrice rocks. Their live shows are amazing. The new album strikes me as being a little flat though. I don't get even half of the energy out of it that comes through at their shows...
Score = 0
i hear xboxs given away by clap your hands say yeah have way better graphics.
Score = 0
fuck you all, i want an xbox 360
Score = 0
To make things worse, I don't even get the impression from that website that this contest is limited to people who clicked over from stereogum. The only link here may be the cash SG's stuffing in their e-pockets. BTW, Stereogum readers, did you know that one of you is eligible to win $1,000,000 playing Stereogum features McDonald's Monopoly? Buy Big Macs today!
Score = 0
awww, boo hoo, a chance to win an x-box 360. How shitty guys. Let's cry.
Score = 0
yeah, i'd very much like an xbox even if thrice is giving it to me. fuck you dudes.
Score = 0
the only cool thing about this new thrice record is the artwork, courtesy of mr. dave eggers.

As much as Thrice might suck:
1) I want the Xbox
2) At least it's not more Sufjan crap

''Sorry, you are not a US resident and can not enter. Read the rules for more details. ''
Why do they give me the option to choose UK then?!
Score = 0
While you guys are internally debating the impact of this giveaway on stereogum's "indie cred", I signed up and moved on with my life.
Score = 0
Then don't click on the link to the contest!! Close the post and move the fuck on.
Nobody is forcing you to enter. Just for that, I hope you haters miss out on every "cool band" anything - ever.
Score = 0
booo... I wanna enter. I guess Canadians will never be recognized as equals. Good luck to those who can enter.
Score = 0
Scott, don't limit the contests. Nowhere on the form does it say "You must be a Thrice fan and prove it to win." If you and Linda Rohnstadt were giving away an Xbox 360, I'd still sign up. So please, continue to give back to your readers by offering them the chance of cool prizes, regardless of what band/label gives it to you. Although I happen to like Thrice a little bit...
Score = 0
A lot of pissed of Canadians who apparently cannot afford their own Xbox 360...including myself. A lot of anger over a simple marketting ploy, and one that apparently is not going to work at all. Well done Island Records. Here's an idea - how about releasing music that doesn't suck?
As for Stereogum selling out et al. - hey, the content is still free and the posts still among the best on the WORLD WIDE WEB. So I'm good. I'm good.
Score = 0
Is this shilling for some corporation? Yes. Do I care? No. I just signed up to win something in a probably-very-good-odds drawing and unless people had mentioned "Thrice" in the comments so many times, I wouldn't have even remembered the name of the band. Only one person complained about the Beck Bearbricks (http://www.stereogum.com/archives/001453.html) giveaway, even though he's sold one trillion albums for a major label and the album that was being promoted was only so-so.
Additionally, Scott Stereogum probably has no control over the countries where this contest is valid so posting comments like "I want to win and I'm from Canada!" will probably not change anything.
Score = 0
This is a great offer if it's real. Don't take anyones shit Scott. If I win this baby I'll send you a photo of myself and my new Xbox 360. Promise.
I think it should be said that people who have the time to bitch about ANYTHING on a blog that visit need to fuck off. It's like the people who hate on Howard Stern. You don't like Howard, don't listen to him.
Obviously this blog has devoted readers like myself, and anyone who bitches about this contest is out of line and needs to find ways to not be so fucking bitter in their lives.
Score = 0
The problem with these contests is there's never any follow through. I don't think they even really give the product away.
Arjanwrites has them on his site all the time; yet I've never seen anyone win one. Just a bunch of people sign up for record company mailing lists and receive Sarah McLachlan and Thrice emails for eternity.
So basically what the bloggers are doing are selling their readers out to the corporate labels.
Score = 0
God, what a bunch of whiny bitches. A) The new Thrice record is good, you should actually, you know, listen to it. B) It's a free contest. God damn.
Score = 0
For what it's worth, Scott didn't get a dime to run this contest. He did it specifically to offer one of his visitors a free Xbox 360.If you think it's some cheap marketing ploy from Island to get people to buy the new Thrice album, then I invite you to enter the contest, ignore Thrice, and then one of you can sit and laugh about how the cheap ploy didn't work while you are playing your Xbox 360 that you spent 0 dollars on...and don't forget to thank Scott.
Score = 0
What a bunch of angry hipsters. It ain't free to run this site, and Scott needs to pay rent and put food on the table I'm sure. And beleive it or not, Wolf Parade and every other indie snob band out there wants to sell records as well, preferrably the amount that Thrice has. I may not be a huge Thrice fan, but it's a free XBox, and I enjoy the site, so the Williamsburg mafia here should stop bitching. Music is a business, yes even YOUR music.
Score = 0
"God, what a bunch of whiny bitches. A) The new Thrice record is good, you should actually, you know, listen to it"
No it's not.
"B) It's a free contest. God damn."
You don't hear me complaining.

The Rogue Wave's giveaway xbox comes with the wireless controller AND a game!
seriously you guys need to stop trashing stereogum, if you don't like the blog don't read it. sheeeeeesh!
Score = 0
I'm still simply amazed at the number of people that subscribe to the "if you don't like it, ignore it" credo. Why? Why not engage with what you see? Isn't that what discourse is, and isn't that what "web logs" were originally intended to foster? Ignoring things you don't like is exactly what is WRONG with things today. You lazy, greedy fucks.
It's fucking mindblowing that people will subsume conversation for a free fucking game system--that will no doubt keep them on their mindlessly consuming asses, doing absolutely nothing.
Score = 0
annoyed, you are a loser to the extreme. stop wasting your time and the readers time. loser loser loser loser loser. you life will continue to be sad and lonely and angry unless you fucking wake up. until then you will get mad about blog content and spend your days writing responses. you're a loser. wake up and change you life you fucking, wait for it, loser.
Score = 0
Is bitching the same thing as engaging? Is it the same thing as discourse?
My problem is this, what I feel you're doing is some sort of indie version of the PMRC. I'm a big girl, I can tell when there's a record-company promotion going on. I can even click on the little opt out boxes. I can decide on my own whether to buy albums. I'm a big girl, I don't need you to protect me.
Score = 0
Now, wait a minute...I'm a loser for thinking critically about something, and this last seven year-old isn't for repeating a word like a tourette's sufferer? And getting mad about someone else getting mad at blog content? That's a meta-loser! Ah, I love basking in the irony. Enjoy your sad, pathetic, mentally retarded life. If you'd actually like to ENGAGE in a discussion or debate instead of crying, let me know. You're pathetic.
Score = 0
Look, get set something straight...thrice = bad; stereogum = good; contest = bad, wolf parade = awesome...the williamsburg mafia has spoken.
Score = 0
Actually, Janine, you're completely wrong, but I appreciate your attempt. The PMRC was ostensibly interested in protecting children from "obscene" material on records--they actually were wives of Congressmen with nothing better to do than engage in a misguided moral crusade against Frank Zappa and Twisted Sister. What I'm doing is the opposite--nowhere have I told anyone what to do--I'm simply attempting to comment on the topic of corporate (and, we might say, political) intervention into music promotion--more specifically, the clunky free giveaway of an XBOX as a record label's plea for attention for a god-awful band.
This has nothing to do with "indie," whatever that horribly ill-defined term means.
Score = 0
Wow...I stop checking Stereogum for a few days, and then 53 comments for a Thrice post!
This "annoyed" guy needs to take his vitriol elsewhere--the Stereogum forum just isn't the place for it, man.
And, who's Thrice?
Score = 0
this is awesome. annoyed has gone into definite mentally ill mode. now, i normally don't laugh at the mentally ill. but when you have someone writing this much and being this much of a loser, well, it's special.
Score = 0
That's a pretty impressive combination of condescention and obtuseness. I'm going to give it a 9.8.
Since I have to spell the comparison out for you... I'm not talking about the PMRC's obsession with obscenity, but rather their more general need to protect others from what they see as harmful. Just as you're trying to protect me from big bad marketing. That's all.
By the way, have you realized yet that your earth-shattering revelation about the point of the whole contest was obvious to the point of being stupid? What person born in the late 20th century isn't going to notice it was a marketing ploy? ...and also not care because, hey, free X-Box.
Score = 0
what's that janine???? pitchfork gave this thread a 9.8??? we're almost as good as a pavement album.
Score = 0
wahhhhhh!!! only for u Americans... canadians just cant seem to catch a break
Score = 0
"What person born in the late 20th century isn't going to notice it was a marketing ploy?..."
a)Maybe you haven't seen half the comments made in this thread
b)Nothing is free. The information you give them by entering the contest is being paid for, by way of delivering demographic information to unknown companies, regardless of the fact you may opt-out of mailing lists for Thrice's mall shows across America.
Score = 0
Yes, we all see this for what it is but why not just take Island's free crap and throw the music away. This is no different than an ad page in a magazine--turn it and it's gone, move onto the next piece. No discourse is really needed, Annoyed (still) and I'm with you on most of your points.
No one that checks in to Stereogum is going to be converted to a Thrice fan and Island should know better. It is sad that a label that gave us Nick Drake, PJ Harvey and early U2 has to peddle this Thrice shit cynically.
Score = 0
You've got Pitchfork on the brain I was thinking gymnastics/figure skating.
I give up. Thank you, thank you for saving me from myself! They now know I read sterogum AND they have the special e-mail address I use for entering contests. Do they have no honor!
