The numbing list parade rolls on! Today's opportunity to sit in judgment of others' opportunity-to-sit-in-judgment comes courtesy of Brit rag Q, who've announced their picks for the Top 50 albums of '07. American readers will have to be understanding on two fronts: First, some 2006 Stateside releases came out just this year across the Atlantic (e.g. Cold War Kids, the Hold Steady, the Decemberists etc.). And second, as in accord with British law and precedent, Arctic Monkeys must place somewhere in the Top 5 (this year, see also). But still there it is, the first -- and after the massive amounts of press and inevitable if low-key backlash, perhaps only? -- time this year Neon Bible is regarded so reverently. Come to think of it this list is pretty reverent to the traditionally "big" indie acts across the board (Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, the Shins, the White Stripes), probably a little too much so. Anyway somebody should send their office a copy of Hissing Fauna sometime today.

Where's Animal Collective? Where's Of Montreal? Where's Okerrvil River? They're on the Pitchfork, Tiny Mix Tapes, and other American Independent Music Media Outlets Best of 2007 lists.
Unless you live in London, listen to pop radio, and read Q magazine religiously and find it misrepresentative, you really need not get worked up about this list.
Save your energy to debate the lists that actually represent yourself and your music taste.

Seriously, you guys need to understand that Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys are the two biggest bands in England. When I was in Manchester in July, Arctic Monkeys played two nights, each night to an insane crowd of 50,000 +. I was there. It was fascinating. At least 100 drunk/high Mancunians grilled me about Kings of Leon and could not grasp how I did not think they were the second coming of Christ. The same logic explains why The Coral are #22 on this list. Shitty band, but also huge in England.

This album and their last album are so bad that meg white has stagefright from the embarrassment of how bad the songs are and how mediocre her drumming is. This is the best list yet.
Yes, I know there are a handfull of 2006 albums here, and a fall out boy album but there are many things very right about this list.
For Example. Arcade Fire as the best album of the year is great, it was really an amazing album. I know it got hyped and anything over hyped is instantly shuned by anyone who is "too cool" for that.
Its also superb to see the following albums in the top 25: Interpol, Good/Bad/Queen/, The Shins, Modest Mouse, Rufus Wainright, Radiohead, Spoon and Beirut (#26).
Its also the highest I have seen Beirut this year and its the best album of the year. It would still be nice to see Andrew Bird in the list.
AND its great to finally see and album give some GOGOL BORDELLO love. much deserved.

Just to clarify some of the posts concerning Q Magazine:
- It's a music magazine aimed at women. Over 51% of their readership is now comprised of women or something to that effect.
- Most of the ads are for women. Last year or the year before, they placed JAMES BLUNT as album of the year. Godawful horseshit that it was, it was named album of the year.
- It's the music industry's equivalent of Cosmo for fuck sake.

What I don't understand is why everyone is taking this so personally. These lists are based on albums that have created different levels of impact. That's not to say all of them are brilliant or that they deserve the recognition- it just means these are the albums that people were talking about for this year. Of course Arcade Fire are going to be number 1. Whether you liked Neon Bible or not, you can't deny the repsonse that the album has gotten all year. That's what these lists signify- albums that for one reason or another, have impacted the social consciousness of music for this year. There's is no way lists like these could ever mean anything else because music is entirely subjective. Just because I hear an album one way does not mean someone else hears it like I do. There is no way to creat a uniform set of standards for what makes an album the "best" onto a list like this. It just doesn't make sense.

I'd pick Neon Bible too. It has a maturity that most "indie" acts lack. The album also comes from the same voice while having a completely different feel. They did that cuz everyone ELSE in the world picked OKC as the album of the year, so they wanted to be EDGY!! hahaha...now Ladies n Gentlemen is great shit but...come on...same w/Neon Bible, good stuff, good as those guys could do, impressive, but not better/best compared to their IDOLDS Radiohead...but n e way...how bout that Tigers trade HUH!?!?!

BTW i just realized i havnt seen n e one put Baby 81 in their top lists...SORTA surprising, no?? i'm not a BIG fan of it but it has a few really solid songs and i thought all the mags loved it?
