Pitchfork's Top 100 Tracks Of 2007

P4K's Top 100 Tracks Of 2007 covers the gamut. We have a few complaints -- "Myriad Harbour," "Mistaken For Strangers," and No Age's "Neck Escaper" way too low-- but there are enough solids to offset the misses. For instance, good to see Magik Markers and Sally Shapiro make showings. Maybe MM could've been stronger. Interesting facts: Kanye, Animal Collective, Jay-Z, Spoon, LCD, and M.I.A are the only folks to show up more than once, unless you include rap guest spots (hey Lil Wayne). If you count Panda Bear as part of his Collective then AC wins out. Animal-wise, there are two different types of "Deer" (and one "Dear"), a bear, a bat, a caribou, a mouse, and an elephant gun. Finally, Mr. and Ms. Indie Rock placed right next to each other in the top 15, cute.

"All My Friends" at #1 is pretty much a no brainer.

Surprised that the National's entry is "Mistaken for Strangers" over "Fake Empire" and Okkervil doesn't get on with "John Allyn" or "Unless it Kicks", rather than "Our Life". Also, Beirut's song should have been "The Penalty."

It's interesting that in the individual lists, Beirut only gets on two lists, "Elephant Gun" with a #21 and "A Sunday Smile" at #19, and yet "Elephant Gun" is the one on the final list.

Surprised Umbrella isn't #1, since they're usually big on closing with the summer anthem (Timberlake/Britney). I like the lists though, but goddamn, who can listen to that much goofy glitchy electronic music? Not everyone's a DJ.

(I still love someone's comment from the Mr. Indie Rock list: "Who the fuck is Jens Lekman?")

Good list, but disappointed to see Sunset Rubdown overlooked. Lots of great tracks on that album. I suspect it'll show up realtively high on the Best Album list.

I still don't get picking The Past is a Grotesque Animal as the top track from Hissing Fauna. Its a good song, but not at all what I think of when I think of one of the best albums of 07. Plus its not like that many people are gonna put a 12 min song in their best of playlist.

Still don't understand the mass appeal of LCD Soundsystem.
Dan Deacon at #30 sort of pisses me off. I know it's sort of a low number but still. Ok, he has fun concerts. I can totally understand going to a show for that reason. But that doesn't mean his music is good.
Also, Fireworks higher than Peacebone doesn't seem right to me.
Otherwise this list is pretty good.

@Elliot - I'm with you on LCD Soundsystem. They're catchy, I guess, but everyone fawns over the guy like he's the second coming of Christ. I don't get it. Seems boring to me.

Dan Deacon, however, is good. Aside from the fact that his shows do rock, Spiderman of the Rings is a good listen. Different, yes - but good songwriting. It's intricate in surprising ways if you really get in and listen to it.

I'm stoked that they put Atlas so high. That is one hell of a good song. Also nice to see Gui Boratto and The Field up there. Minimalist techno, FTW!!

i feel like the people at pitchfork just sit around with all the best albums and then ask themselves "what's like the fourth or third best song from this album?"
and then that's what they used.

Does "All My Friends" sound like James Murphy channeling Bono and cribbing the vocal melody "Where the Streets Have No Name" to anyone else? Man, I hate U2 so much and this song just made me want to throw up.

Also, P4K says it has "an opening line worthy of a great novel". Really?

"That's how it starts // We go back to your house"

Great novel, eh? That's a bit of a fucking stretch... Maybe it's time they put down Catcher In the Rye and started to read above the 4th grade level.

LCD Soundsystem deserves whatever awards they get this year, regardless of how insecure that teenager song made me feel about being a teenager. I still jam to "Get Innocuous" and the corresponding Soulwax Remix on a daily basis.

a lot of haters on LCD Soundsystem. . .

it was a great follow-up to the debut in that it retained all the fun, dance-y tracks, but added some meaning to the lyrics. . .

i've been living with this album since last December, and it's definitely one of the most influential of the year (at least in my world.)

Anybody else find the humor in the backlash they give former heroes The Shins, Arcade Fire, and even The National for becoming popular? Any publication that bases its taste on music in which they can insure the people they hated in high school will NOT be listening to, is not a publication I take very seriously.

Which is why it's always funny to see their token "popular hit they're going to applaud to pretend like their not too off the pretentious deep end" selection in the top ten. "Since You've Been Gone," "Toxic," and one of those highly-successful Justin Timberlake songs I can't currently identify have all made this list before. As for this year, Rihanna and her umbrella, brella, brella, take the spot.

What a joke

I don't know if LCD is the "best" of the year but, out of all the albums that came out this year, I've probably listened to that one more than any other.

I can think of many reasons to show that its far from perfect, but I could do that with any other album as well. Its as good as any other choice. As someone who left NYC after 8 years living there right before the album came out, there are times that I dare say, parts of that album really did strike an emotional chord. I sound so lame admitting that. Damn it.

I feel quite uncool for saying this, because it's not epic or innovative or a career-changing move or whatever, but for me the best album of the year will be Spoon's Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. On a pure track-by-track basis, it's unbeatable: every song is great.

Knowing that Pitchfork will never in a million years rank this number one, however, I'm hoping to see Person Pitch up there.

Huh...you guys post Jarvis Cocker news yet, no love for 'Running the World', 'Don't Let Him Waste Your Time' or MY fav, 'I Will Kill Again??' i think history might show a 'whoopsy daisy' there;)

OH n go back n listen to track 16 from the Nine Inch Nails cd, 'Zero Sum' it's genius, one of Trent's best ever. For realzies, go listen.

And all these indie bands get TWO mentions, yet not one for the Arctics? (my fav actually might be their bside 'The Bakery.')

N only ONE for most peoples best cd o the year In Rainbows? odd... though you DID win some cred for picking my favorite too, 'All I Need' haha, so i guess THATS good;)

N speaking of RH, no 'Black Swan' from the The Eraser album? That deserves a tsk tsk.

Speaking of black, 'Black Lexus' by Joseph Arthur is a classic.

Oh n lastly, where R the chicks!?!...Rilo/Pipettes/PJ Harvey, Tegan n Sara 'back in your head!!?? ...tss woman haters! :p

And i'm still not convinced miss winehouse is actually female so...

Though i guess i should be thankful that at least you didnt put down that suicide-inspiring '1 2 3' song from Feist hahaha, she was so SHIT on snl, even with SEVEN, yes SEVEN backup singers...i counted, barf. She's like PJ's talentless canadian cousin, with as much edge as a plastic butter knife.

(But i don't mean that in a bad way, winks)

Oh 'n u effers better write about Sarah Slean when she finally puts out a new cd, she's actually a quality canadian songstress:p

What an unbelievably atrocious list. Some of these songs are good, yes, in their own right, but by no means should be on a list of the Top 100 of the year. Just because something gains popularity or is released by an indie band as a single does not mean it is immediately discredited as a song. (And no, including 'Umbrella' in the top 5 does not add a shred of legitimacy or respectability, even though it is a good song.) If Pitchfork was around in the 60's, they would have ripped apart The Beatles simply for having a #1 single.

And what's with all the goddamn dancehall shit? Whoever supplies the x to pitchfork's writers needs to f--king STOP.

Pitchfork Media is killing rock and roll.

Good for Los Campesinos! at #41, but "International Tweexcore Underground" was the song to pick from them, and it should've been around #14.

What the fuck?!

How cynical are you?

Let's put it this way:

If Pitchfork were to ONLY include "indie" bands on the list... If they were to put Arcade Fire, The Shins, etc. in the top 5, you'd cry and bitch that they aren't versatile enough...

When they include songs like "Lip Gloss" and "Umbrella" (both of which are excellent singles), you bitch and moan... Ironically complaining about the LACK of "indie." Accusing Pitchfork of forcing pop songs into the top 10...

Perhaps they just fucking like those songs? Perhaps they don't sit around and deliberate for hours upon hours about whether or not the list is "pop" enough... keep it mind it was derived from the writer's individual lists, which automatically renders your accusations moot.

And Bender... I realize the tone of your accusation was in good humor, but implying that having a few black artists in an "indie" website's top 10 is... ah, fuck it. nevermind.

As for the "backlash," what in the hell are you even talking about? The Arcade Fire and The National both made the list and the reasoning behind each inclusion made sense. Should they have plopped "Boxer" and "Neon Bible" in the no. 1 & 2 positions, like every other publication??

That said, where the hell is "The Magic Position" or "Wild Mountain Nation"? I'm also very disappointed in the Of Montreal track they chose... "Bunny Ain't No Kind of Rider" and "Suffer for Fashion" are both much better.

What are people hearing in that #1 LCD Soundsystem song? My god, it's boring. No chorus, no hooks, the same bangy piano chord over and over and over and over and over. I've listened to it four times now, waiting to hear what makes it so great, and I'm not feeling it at ALL.

And what's with the new fascination with reverb? That #3 song is a big soupy mess.

Maybe I'm just getting old (out of my 20s now!), but damn. More obtuse does not equal better.

'Atlas' sounds like it's going to segue into Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson at any second. oh well.

There's a torrent online at btjunkie.org
