Rolling Stone's Top Single Of The Year Is Not "Umbrella"

Sorry Ri, you don't get to claim the top spot this year, even though "Umbrella" will go down as this annum's "Hey Ya"/"Crazy"/big-time pop jam. Rolling Stone's we-love-everything-but-country countdown doesn't even give the Barbados bombshell's syllabic stutterer the #2 slot -- that belongs to ... actually we'll preserve the drama. But not at the top spot, 'cause we're pretty sure that was awarded in a way to give everybody a chance to say "and the winner is ... Hov!" So fine, we said it. At 100, there's bound to be some nice inclusions, so we'll say that up front, and save the bitching for the other side...

10 "Int'l Player's Anthem" - UGK
09 "Boyz" - M.I.A.
08 "Long Walk Home" - Bruce Springsteen
07 "Rehab" - Amy Winehouse
06 "Dough Is What I Got" - Lil Wayne
05 ""Four Winds" - Bright Eyes
04 "D.A.N.C.E." - Justice
03 "Umbrella" - Rihanna
02 "A Few Words In Defense Of Our Country" - Randy Newman
01 "Roc Boys" - Jay-Z
So "Same Girl" makes it and not "Same Dude"? Fine, but Bright Eyes with one of the top 5 singles of the year? (Backing the wrong indie boat on that one.) "Make It Wit Chu" is an old Desert Sessions song so, while not exactly a 2007 tune, we understand and endorse the decision of whoever lobbied for it. Some bones thrown to kids like you! and me! with the exclamatory "You! Me! Dancing!" by Los Campesions!, some Panda Bear, Blitzen Trapper, etc. And then some bones thrown to people they think are like you and me (we stand by CYHSY despite the mostly meh second album but "Satan Said Dance" has no business being here, not even if the list was curated by a blogger mentally stuck in '05 like Andy Richter is in '85 -- oh and Merry Ludachristmas!). And yes, "Umbrella" was bested by Randy Newman's return to Sail Away-style polemicizing. If only Rihanna too had written a New York Times op-ed piece about "Umbrella" this would've all turned out differently. Next year! You better watch your ass Paul Krugman, Krugman, Krugman, eh eh eh...

Sorry but when was that 12 minute long Of Montreal song ever a single? More so than Heimdalsgate? Weird I say... Just plain weird.

This list triggered my gag reflex. #15..... Nuff said.

It's funny how the lists funnel from terrible to right on as the publication goes from mainstream to obscure respectively. Mainstream implies a larger budget which should imply the creme-de-la-creme of the talent pool. Conversely it looks like Ryan Seacrest is resonsible for both the rolling stone and spin best of lists. One was written on a Tuesday and the other a Saturday, again respectively. One is better than the other but still just another day of the week.

I am surprised that Rolling Stone put Vampire Weekend on the list. Not an insult to the band, but to the mag.

I really don't follow what exactly gets released as singles when ... but this makes no sense at all. Several songs on this list aren't even in the top few tracks on their respective albums.

weird... because this list is surprisingly kind of decent. i expected daughtry at #1 or some shit. if anything the list suffers from choosing the wrong song from the artist... "same girl" but no "i'm a flirt"?! "stronger" instead of "the good life"?! "the past is a grotesque animal" instead of... well, ANYTHING else on that album?! I do have to admit that "Roc Boys" was probably my favorite single of the year though. and as much as i love "comfy in nautica", that single came out in 2005. "carrots" or "take pills" would make more sense.

this list is awful. how are you gonna have britney spears and 50 cent in your top 20? to have panda bear in the 70s and of montreal in the top 20 is pretty strange, along with roc boys at #1. the remix with jadakiss and beanie sigel is gonna be crazy. there are some really good songs on there though, t-pain and kid rock are the cream of the crop.

how on earth could anything OTHER than "umbrella" be the single of this year. It seems like this list was mostly compiled at random. Kid Rock? Clap Your Hands? Hey at least it's "diverse," albeit in a totally idiotic way.

Kid Rock? Really? And T-Pain pains me. there, I said it. Anywhere on that list. Bad call, bros.

And wasn't LDN 06?

But that being said, "Lip Gloss" should have been higher.

I love the new M.I.A. album but "Boyz" as a top 10? I guess they haven't actually ever listened to M.I.A., just saw it was the first single.

And they choose Weird fishes over Bodysnatchers? And "Our life is not a movie or maybe" over "unless its kicks"?

And four winds is the 5th best song of the year???? That must make "We are nowhere, and it's now" the best song of all time.

But then they still manage to track down classics like Cherry Bomb, Mistaken for Strangers, Crystal Cat, and All My Friends. I really wish I knew how things worked at the Stone.

Delightful that you yanks are starting to pay attention to the very fine Herman Düne, but that song was released in early 2006, wasn't it?

RS is and has been trying so desperately hard to stay cool and relevant. Too bad its as big of a piece of shit as Spin (which has been a piece of shit since like 2000). What happened to good music mags?

Sidenote- Who else can't WAIT until all these fucking lists are done?

I think everyone is missing a very salient point here.

The fact that Nickleback can still make it anywhere on ANY list is absolutely mindblowing.

Did you know that Nickleback are still the biggest selling modern rock band on earth? Sold nearly 7 million copies of their new record. How insane is that? I didn't even know they still existed.

"Reasonable Doubt" and "The Blueprint" = Jay-Z albums

"American Gangster" = a Gay-Z album

Seriously, I would even consider that crap a step down from Kingdom Come, which says a lot.

On another note: Real Talk > Same Girl

Fuck rihanna. umbrella has 3 syllables and yet she finds a way to extend it to having more syllables than the word has letters. and who the fuck sings about "me and my um-ber-el-la" if i saw some panhandler on the street playing a wooden crate, a harp, and singing that song while waving an umbrella on a cloudless day....welll that might make since to me...but were talking a bunch of mindless fucks actually enjoyed that song?
what the fuck america?
and fuck rolling stone
if this list doesn't make them lose all credibility, then lets back track to there top 100 guitarists of all time list. What bunch of fucking idiots.
