The Year's Best Selling Music, According To Apple

Ahh, the kidz and their iTunes. Steve Jobs's little corp. that could released rankings (though not figures, that's privileged information) for the best selling albums and singles of 2007. And iPod Nation loves them some Maroon 5, Winehouse, Kanye, and Fergie! MTV brings us news of the iTunes sales charts, noting the results are "so similar to the Billboard albums chart and Hot 100 singles chart, both of which measure sales at traditional retailers (as well as online sales)." The unavoidable conclusion MTV failed to draw? Online purchasers have just as shitty taste as brick-and-mortar buyers!

BEST SELLING ALBUMS
01 Maroon 5 - It Won't Be Soon Before Long
02 Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
03 Kanye West - Graduation
04 Daughtry - Daughtry
05 Colbie Caillat - Coco
06 Linkin Park - Minutes To Midnight
07 Various Artists - High School Musical 2 soundtrack
08 Timbaland - Timbaland Presents: Shock Value
09 John Mayer - Continuum
10 Various Artists - Hairspray soundtrack
The top singles people who spend money on my music liked to buy after the jump.

BEST SELLING SINGLES
01 Fergie - "Big Girls Don't Cry (Personal)"
02 Kanye West - "Stronger"
03 Soulja Boy - "Crank That"
04 Plain White T's - "Hey There Delilah"
05 Gwen Stefani - "The Sweet Escape"
06 Rihanna (Feat. Jay-Z) - "Umbrella"
07 Fergie - "Glamorous"
08 Maroon - "Makes Me Wonder"
09 Timbaland (featuring Keri Hilson & D.O.E.) - "The Way I Are"
10 Akon - "Don't Matter"

Pretty much the same crap you see on VH1 when they play videos.

I purchase off of iTunes and I bought none of those. I don't have a very large record store around where I live so iTunes is a viable substitute. I don't think very many record stores carry Dirty Projectors while iTunes does. Sure I very much miss the packaging, but in my opinion it's better to sacrifice that than the music all together. But I still buy CDs, vinyl too.

Don't make excuses for buying off of itunes, in fear of what hipster trash will say. If you want to do it, just do it. :D

Also, buying music online is better for the environment.

The title of that Timbaland track really bothers me. Even just reading it in my head causes me to frown. Am I the only one feeling this way?

At least this affirms that mainstream country fans haven't become computer literate yet.

I purchase of Itunes, I think they have a great library of music, I however cringe at what OTHER people are buying, hence this awful 'best selling ' list. I feel bad saying this cos of his situation with his mother, but I lost all respect for Kanye when he had his fit about not winning an MTV award. Give me a break.

Despite the fact that any time I heard that damn Timbaland (He's clearly much hipper and edgier than that shoe/boot company that spells their name remarkably similar...) it managed to stay in my head for hours. Also, I'm right there with you Mushababe. High-five to SuperUnison-- good point. When that does happen, Napster help us all. Or HypeMachine or whatever the hell we'll use, I dunno.

Kevin: I'm hoping that wasn't sarcasm. I don't know. I mean, if it were up to me, I would buy only CDs. Not because it's the "musical culturally acceptable" thing to do, but because it's another level of immediacy with the artist. Plus, CDs are shiny, there's no doubt about that. Furthermore, I also conveniently forgot to mention that I illegally download music. So much for consistency in the matter. I like my instant gratification, I guess. Point is, the crap in those charts is simply a testament to popular music tastes and why some people feel compelled to call all of the music that they like "indie" or whatever.

Mushababe: definitely not the only one.

I think I've managed to avoid hearing any one of those songs, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

Was Big Girls Don't Cry really that big of deal? Don't get me wrong, I've been know to listen to a little bit of Fergie but that is THE WORST song of all time.

haha superunison nailed it. how is there no country on this list!?!?!?!

and i'm keeping this anon to say: the new maroon 5 is the shit.

There's no country on this list because I bet a lot of country music listeners still buy CDs and while they are waiting in line at the country store, they buy that little device with a tiny blade that helps them remove the shrink wrap.

Come to think of it, the last thing that I got off iTunes was a Pale Saints album.

I only buy off of iTunes when I can't find mp3s anywhere else. Emusic is where it's at. They don't have everything, but it's indie-centric, so I've downloaded a lot more different albums that I would have from reading reviews and best-sellers lists than I would have otherwise. Oh, and it's drm-free and WAY cheaper. Eat it, iTunes.

Well this is a pretty accurate representation of preteen myspace kids who got ahold of their parents' credit card and went shopping on iTunes.

I don't get the idea of paying for digital music...

maybe that's because I work in a record store but I mean, for about the same price you have way better sound quality and artwork and an actual CD that you can bring with you everywhere.

...Yet all my most favorite artists were still top sellers!

I'm still trying to get over Colbie Caillat's listing being higher than Linkin Park's. I envy tkincher... I haven't been able to avoid hearing "Bubbly" by a long shot...

@Mushababe: The thing that really bugs me about it is that I'm pretty sure in the song he actually says "the way I'm are" instead of "the way I are."
