You Love The '80s

Among other releases I didn't get a chance to write about last month: this TOTALLY AWESOME box set, Left Of The Dial. Buy it at Insound and save 10% by entering "stereogum" at checkout (expires 12/12).

Nearly perfect tracklist, but quibble if you want.

Great track listing, poor sequencing. But I guess that's what programmable CD players are for.

Can I lobby this space for another "Other Music Stole My Paycheck" post?
That one turned me on to some shit that's been blowing my mind for the last month or so... Feist, Lo Borges, etc.....
Maybe you will unearth some treasures on your S.F. trip?
Thanks...

So... you're doing cross promotions for Insound? Could you use some kind of secret code for your readers to tip us off for when you're recommending stuff that's actually good versus things you're stealthly advertising?

Insound needs better allies online than that sneaky payola site, Bitchforkmedia

okay, so the cocteau twins track isn't their best. but hey, there's hoodoo gurus' "i want you back"! best pop song since alex chilton's "september gurls".

how can anyone resist this?

That's it, I'm calling BULLSHIT!

This box set is crap -- terrible art work, terrible sequencing, terrible representation of the bands involved.

How much are they paying you?

It's not as impressive as the No Thanks! punk boxed set, but it certainly casts a wider net... which makes sense given its utter lack of focus.

Is there a secret code I can enter to get this for, say, $25??

FYI -- you can use that 10% code on anything in the store, not only the boxed set.

re: Dear Nora,
yes we thought she was adorable.

I have the "No Thanks! 70's Punk Rebellion" set. Personally I think "Left of The Dial" is just as good. PEOPLE!! Stop concentrating on the outer apearance. its what on the cd that counts. you know what they say.... You cant Judge an album by its cover.

Ew. Design is a bad trip that I had in '98. Anyways can someone please PLEASE tell me what the fuck does Ashlee Simpson mean by "you make me want to lala"?!

mostly ok, but wtf: "Rise" as representing p.i.l.? I think "Public Image" would be a better choice. But again, overall a solid set of tracks.

the NO THANKS! set really hit home with me, so i was excited about this one as well. but i only kept it for a couple weeks before selling it back on amazon. as some people have mentioned, the presentation of the set (including the book and its contents) pales in comparison to NO THANKS!, but i won't dwell on that. but i did want to note some shameful OMISSIONS:

where are...

-the b-52s??!?!?!
-talk talk?!?!?!?!
-fugazi?!?!?!?
-mudhoney?!?!!?
-superchunk?!?!?!?!
-let's active?!?!?!
-daniel johnston?!?!?
-the vaselines?!?!?!

and why are these (commercially huge) bands in their place?!?!?!?!

-depeche mode
-red hot chili peppers (though i like the song)
...there are some other questionable calls, but those two are the most blatant.

oh, and using the SAME joy division song on both sets was a baaaaaaaaaaaaad move. lazy. and what's with wasting 9 minutes on a boring bauhaus track?

argh. most of it is great, but the mistakes are BAD.
