Wow. What a fantastic album. I was hesitant about a "soft rock" Wilco album, but they nailed it. Just wow.

The album is definitely more mellow than I thought it would be (especially with the new members of the band). That said, it is still pretty damn good. Standouts - "Walkin'" ('cause its got some kick to it), "What Light" and "On and On and On."
Glad they are back, and looking forward to some live shows this summer.
(The Police and Wilco at Bonnaroo is looking better and better.)

I would say that this is what happens when Pink Floyd meets Miles Davis, sprinkled with some folk. I think that Jeff's acoustic romp heavily influenced this cd.
First listen, very good. Probably not their best work but again a sweet turn in their career. Almost liked they combined everything they know into one cd.

I really like this album. Very gentle and healthy sounding. Not the ramshackle lovely weirdoinsanity of A Ghost is Born, but what is.

It all goes down smoothly, which is a little disappointing to me...I always like a Spiders or an Ashes of American Flags to challenge me a little bit. I think I'll grow to like it, though.
I just expected the lineup that released Kicking Television to rock a little harder.

I missed the little listening party, which is fine. I've heard the three "teaser" songs, plus live versions of a few others. After reading the reviews here, I'm really excited for this album. I haven't looked forward to a new release this much in years. I think I'll hold off on listening to the rest of the album until I actually have the CD in my hands, which means I'll have to have some amazing will power once it leaks.

My first impression is that it's not really a cohesive album-statement, which is something we've come to expect from Wilco. It's not as strong in that regard.
I definitely hear a lot of the 70's soft rock comparisons, Wings and Rundgren and whatnot. I even hear a little bit of Randy Newman, circa Little Criminals. The standout for me is "On and On and On"; maybe the best Wilco song put to wax yet.
I feel like this album is gonna have songs that grow big time, and songs that fall by the wayside. Some of it just felt like filler. I'll still buy it, of course. It's Wilco for crissakes.

I hope they gave a shout out to Harry Nilsson in the liner notes - often sounds straight out of the 70's. Early Pink Floyd meets Nilsson with a touch of the Dead. A tad too "jam band" for me but a good album nonetheless.

Wilco has made a record that instantly sounds 30 years old.
It sounds like vinyl even on my Ipod.
"Hate it Here" is so classic.
"What Light" is pretty Dylan.
It doesn't rock as hard as some moments on most Wilco records, but it's still a great album. I mean, lots of great albums don't rock that hard.

Because the influence of members aside from Tweedy is more immediately prevalent on this album than perhaps ever before in the band's career, and absolutely since Jay Bennett's departure.
Nels Cline especially. Remove him from this and you'd have a different album entirely.

There are a few positive comments here, it seems like the album is being universally panned on metafilter.com... what's with all the hate? I'm on my fourth or fifth listen in and the songs are growing slowly but very surely.
It seems like YHF is the only album critics are willing to compare SBS to, which is a shame. Wilco's greatest musical accomplishment isn't how similar they can sound to Radiohead, guys. Didn't ANYONE see them moving in this direction?
Hell is Chrome, Handshake Drugs, etc. So what if it sounds like adult contemporary or soft rock? Is there anything wrong with those genres just because their records aren't reviewed on Pitchfork? And, of course, if a record ventures too far out of the Pitchfork/tinymixtapes/cokemachineglow/stereogum sound palette, theres going to be some backlash. That's another habit i hate about critics: they can't wait to shit all over bands that release one amazing album. They hold it against a band if they can't re-create the same magic that possessed them in the previous album. Except for Radiohead, of course.
