Biography: Death Cab For Cutie
You can thank (or blame) Seth Cohen, but Death Cab For Cutie are a band that consistently turns out sincere, thoughtful indie rock in a style their own, and a band like that's not gonna stay a secret. Moving from Barsuk to Atlantic in 2004, the Washington based group made the rare and enviable transformation from adored indie rock act to major label success story, topping the album sales chart with 2008's Narrow Stairs while retaining a core, obsessive fanbase. In May, DCFC became the first and only band ever to guest blog Stereogum, telling us about their previous day jobs and love for Warren G along the way. They're active independently, too: Ben Gibbard's laptop pop project the Postal Service is Sub Pop's best selling album since Nirvana's Bleach, and Chris Walla's turned his own worthy solo album, alongside notable production work on Ben's Postal Service album and Tegan & Sara's The Con. Chris also contributed a b-side to our tribute to Radiohead's OK Computer; have a listen here.

Hey you lovers of vampires and/or mall culture, this one's for you. The Twilight Saga: New Moon OST is the #1 album in America, shortly before the Twilight Saga: New Moon feature film will be the #1 reason to avoid movie theaters in America. Death Cab is on it with "Meet Me On The Equinox," and either because they love Twilight or because they love Hot Topic or because they have to pay the piper for being the featured single from a pretty stacked soundtrack, the band is the only A-list outfit to have been roped into the album's Hot Topic Twilight Tour tie-in. Their engagement was limited to the Hollywood & Highland HT stop, which happened Friday. Now if only somebody brought a camera...

In our continuing Twilight coverage.... For those of you who thought maybe Owl City's Postal Service plagiarism would inspire Ben Gibbard to jam with Jimmy Tamborello on some post-Give Up material forgot he had a vampire movie to promote: The Death Cab singer offered a solo take on The Twilight Saga: New Moon rager "Meet Me On The Equinox" for KROQ. He's in town to perform at the Hollywood & Highland Hot Topic as part of The Twilight Saga: New Moon Talent Tour. Everything ends.

In an interview with EW, Adam Young (aka laptop sensation Owl City) admits his no. 1 single "Fireflies" and the Postal Service in general "are pretty similar," but at the same time claims he's "a lot more of a Death Cab fan." For example, he'd only heard Give Up "a little bit" before people started pointing out the pilfering:
I've become more of a fan having started Owl City, actually. I had some friends in high school that would have it playing in their cars and stuff. It was cool, but it never really caught my ear. It's kind of ironic, looking back at it, because a lot of people do relate the two projects. I can totally see it now, but I didn't really then, for what it's worth.
It's worth a lot, now that you've sold over 100,000 fireflies. There's more. In the form of an unintentional punchline. (Speaking of which, yes, that's real merch pictured above. Real sad merch.)

Master thespian Ben Gibbard brought his Jack Kerouac-celebrating collaboration with Jay Farrar to Los Angeles on a busy Friday which had the pair (along with Death Cab resident beard Nick Harmer) record a session for KCRW before headlining a show at the El Ray with Long Winter main mind John Roderick in the early slot. The kind folks at KCRW allowed our photographer Andrew Youssef to shoot the session, during which Gibbard mentioned he'd be playing a solo set in LA on 11/21 for a benefit organized by Tim Robbins, before AY took in the sold-out El Ray set. More bits: Roderick mentioned a new Long Winters album is on its way soon, and Gibbard reminded everyone they were convened in honor of Kerouac. But you already knew that.
