Biography: R.E.M.
R.E.M. formed in Athens, Georgia almost three decades ago. In 2008, three of the four original members -- Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, and Mike Mills -- released their fourteenth album Accelerate, did some work with indie filmmaker Vincent Moon, hired an advertising agency to shoot some video clips, and became relevant to a younger audience. Stipe also came out of the closet again. And the band was almost struck by lightning. Last year, Stereogum celebrated the 15th anniversary of R.E.M.'s Automatic For The People with the free on-line covers compilation DriveXV, which included the Wrens, Dr. Dog, Blitzen Trapper, Amanda Palmer (The Dresden Dolls), Sara Quin with Kaki King, and Bodies Of Water, among others.

Bill Berry Reunites With Mike Mills, Peter Buck At 40 Watt • The erstwhile R.E.M. drummer made his first public performance since the 2007 R&R HOF induction, last night in Athens. He joined Mike, Peter, and the Minus 5 on "The Ballad of John and Yoko" and "Hang On Sloopy" and you can watch it.
This October R.E.M. will release Live At The Olympia, a double-disc set capturing 39 songs from the band's five-night Dublin stand of "Working Rehearsals" in preparation for their great return to form, Accelerate. The deluxe version includes a DVD film of the shows by Jeremiah and Vincent Moon (who captured the band for a La Blog session and helmed their "Supernatural Superserious" video). From that live footage comes this take of Accelerate's tone-setting "Living Well Is The Best Revenge," performed here like a band that already knows which song is going to open their next album.

The compilation has an impressive lineup, but the circumstances around it are heartbreaking: Almost a year after his wife Melissa died suddenly, 21 artists have contributed exclusive tracks to Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy to help the former Miracle Legion front man continue making music while he raises his three-year old twin daughters. If you don't remember that classic longstanding New Haven (and, early on, Rough Trade-associated) rock band, you might recall Mulcahy from his other group Polaris, who served as the house band on The Adventures of Pete & Pete. Since then, he's released three solo albums under his own name -- the last full-length was 2005's In Pursuit Of Your Happiness. Anyhow, even if he's new to you, he's clearly written a number of songs that mean something to a number of people, as you'll see via the collection's tracklist.
