Is this kind of development in pop music really that surprising? There will always be a huge demographic listening to Top 40 radio pining for something far less urban/electronic. Hell, it’s not a development at all. Americana has always had it’s place on the pop charts outside of Country. Folk music (regardless of how bastardized it is in one’s opinion) will always be commercially viable.
