I love Ida with an incredible passion. I have listened to her album at least two or three times a week (and usually more) every week since December. I’ve seen her live three times, front row for each.* I’ve probably listened to “Oh My God” 300 times in the past 300 days.

I have now listened to this version of “Oh My God” three times, and I don’t need to hear it a fourth time. Guuuuuuuuuh.

*Last time, she gave me a prolonged hug- while she was still on stage (at the end of her cover of, naturally, the Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog”). I’ve had a pretty awesome life, but that was one of my best moments ever, hands down.

I like “Jeff Penalty” quite a bit. I don’t love it, but it manages to have a catchiness (if that’s a word; my spell check doesn’t think so) that falls somewhere between THS and W/IFS. To be fair, I’ve seen Franz live four times between those two bands, so I’m clearly predisposed to his music, but I had somehow missed all of his solo work. Obviously, I’m now going to check it out.

I wish they were working on a NiggyTardust! 2. Saul Williams is my favorite rapper… well, ever.

Love it. Fucking love it. I also like that the title is now punctuated. Lord, I can’t wait- I don’t know what it will sound like, but I know that I will almost certainly adore it.

Black Dice is the single worst band I have ever seen live in my entire life. I have not listened to a single one of their songs since, because even thinking about them makes me want to tear my ears off. Fuck Black Dice and their godawful noise.

I respectfully disagree with everyone above- I think that Bonnaroo has better headliners without a doubt, but I prefer Coachella’s lineup top to bottom- but suffice it to say, neither is a slouch. And also, I’m in Jersey and poor, so I’m not going to either one, anyway.

As a big Weezy fan, I thought it was hilarious when he first started playing the guitar and immediately became the worst guitar player of all-time… but now? It’s just sad. This song is sad- this whole side project of his is sad. You’re already the best rapper in the world, Wayne. Stick with that.

The only thing that hurt my head today more than trying to listen to that song was trying to read that comment.

I completely lost it when this aired. I was laughing my ass off, and when I watched it a second time, I laughed my ass off again.

I always love seeing Finn perform. Is he talking? Is he singing? Is he yelling? It just doesn’t matter, because no matter what he’s doing, it’s full of energy and emotion and rock genius.

I’d say “Slapped Actress” is the best thing on that album, but that’s just me.

At this point, does Franz actually like the moustache, or does he only keep it because Hold Steady and W/IFS fans would think less of him if he shaved it?

Saul is the only one of those acts I’ve ever seen live, but he is amazing. He puts more energy- and more thought- into a concert than anyone in hip hop (or spoken word), and perhaps as much as anyone in any genre.

Oh, and as far as albums that we actually know (or at least assume) will be out next year, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kings of Convenience, and the American release of Ida Maria’s “Fortress Round My Heart” are the only three albums I’m definitely legally purchasing. (“Fortress” is so good that I’ll actually pay for it.)

Well, considering it’s an odd year, there’s a good chance we’ll see another White Stripes album, which means there’s a good chance I will have many rock-related orgasms.

Wow… just wow. That’s impressively bad. I think Weezy would be ashamed to see himself on this list.

I’ve been waiting for some new KoC news, and I’m certainly glad that the album is really coming along. I also think that’s a great title for their new album, but that’s just me. Hopefully, once “IS” drops, let’s hope they come back to the US to tour- they are absolutely great live.

Definitely not the best video, but the clip for “Chips Ahoy!” was also straight-up awful… though this one is actually worse. At least the screenshot provided with the article is spectacular- how I love Franz, even though he wasn’t at Hallowmas this year.

Sonofabitch, why would they choose this song as a single? I mean, I know they’ve already used four songs from the album, but why not choose a better, more radio-friendly song like “M79″ or “Walcott”?

Also, what was with that first line sung by Ezra? He sounded like Bjork with a cold.

Wow… I mean, I’m a big Paste fan (and subscriber), and even though they’d fawned over She & Him before, I certainly didn’t see that coming.

Also, Ida Maria at #13? LOVE IT. One of my five favorite albums of the year… and the fact that it hasn’t come to America is straight-up ridiculous. This is not a good list, but that’s definitely a good pick.

Come on, that’s only the third-best VW video this year, behind “Oxford Comma” and “A-Punk”.

0Posted on Nov 18th, 2008 | re: Gummy Awards 2008: Polls Are Open! (171 comments)

Vampire Weekend gets my vote. I don’t care how many blogs love them and how many blogs hate them- their album is spectacular, and that’s all that matters to me. It came out ten months ago, but for me, it still holds up beautifully.

Also, I don’t care if she doesn’t release a new song for ten years, Karen O will always get my vote for indie rock crush… though it’s awfully hard for her to hold off Feist year after year, as she’s been doing for almost half a decade now.

Celebrities- even the ones who make awesome music- make me want to puke. Just play your damn show, take your money, and leave. You want some food and water? Fine. But get over yourselves.

I’d be a lot less concerned with Maya’s cheese choices and more concerned with her wanting two packs of cigarettes in her dressing room. Even if they’re just for her entourage… I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want anyone smoking around my unborn child.

 0Posted on Sep 29th, 2008 | re: VH1's 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs (826 comments)

Aside from only including one song per artist (not including “featurings”) is idiotic, and the one song chosen for each artist is occasionally ridiculous, but those are things I’d expect from VH1. Otherwise… not nearly as awful as I would’ve imagined. I was expecting much, much worse.

How about some Billy Idol love? OK, maybe he’s not worthy of induction, but regardless, his music is (or, at least, was) great, and his first solo album came out in ’82.

While I’m not a fan, LL Cool J’s first single was in ’84, so he’ll be eligible next year.

And I’m sure someone mentions them every year, but no love for the Replacements?
