Hannah Hunt (especially the last minute and chorus) is probably the best songwriting they’ve ever done. Rostam’s production is off the charts again. We got a taste with “Diane Young” but what these guys are doing in the studio is really magical. Most of it unfortunately doesn’t translate to live performances well, but the recording aspect reminds me of Revolver-Beatles Era creativity. “Everlasting Arms” is pretty much pop perfection. I can’t provide much criticism, besides maybe I’m not exactly into the “Finger Back” and “Worship You” combo, and the chipmunk vocals on “Ya Hey”. But, the album is still pretty great front to back. These guys are a well tuned pop music machine right now.

This is my least favorite song in their entire catalog :(

I wish they would have done one for Unbelievers instead.

We’re all just mad we didn’t do it first :(

Not even The Real Thing? It’s a top 10 Phoenix song for me, for sure.

Hey! Way to respond! Thanks :) Now that you mention it, it does make sense to have that discussion when considering how other critics and fans will view the work. I kind of marginalized you into what you yourself were talking about how others might react, context wise- and when I re-read the section you focus on Bankrupt! you didn’t actually compare it to Wolfgang much at all. So sorry for that, though I have a feeling a lot of people will- which IMO takes away from the pretty solid group of songs they’ve presented. Anyways, nice review/article- I like the hybrid thing you have going. Definitely one of the better premature evaluations I’ve read.

Well, I like this album a lot more than you do. -And I know this is going against your fundamentals of music criticism, but not all work needs to be compared to previous efforts. Just take Bankrupt! for what it is and don’t worry about whether it is better or worse than Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and the rest of their catalog.

Ezra Koenig is a really funny dude. His twitter is full of gold

Oh, and fuck you for saying Available is a “not great” song, dick!

-1Posted on Apr 10th | re: The 10 Best National Songs (197 comments)

My favorite The National songs are, in no order:

Mr. November
Available
Secret Meeting
Fake Empire
Mistaken For Strangers
Squalor Victoria
ADA
Terrible Love
Afraid of Everyone
Conversation 16
England
Karen

Love that the phrasing in fireproof’s second verse mirrors “Ada”

Everyone’s scared of the sophomore slump

I don’t think I’ve ever agreed with these lists. Favorite Death Cab song, guys? I think mine is ‘Crooked Teeth’

What a fucking whiner. You have more than so so so many people. You asked for everything and got it. I like your music Tyler, but really- get some perspective dude.

Transference is probably the Spoon-iest of all Spoon records…. produced by brit daniel, really tight playing, great pop songs. The record has it all and is basically trashed in this post.

mmh ahh! mmh mmh ahh!

0Posted on Mar 27th | re: Spoon Albums From Worst To Best (109 comments)

Kill The Moonlight will always be the best Spoon album. No question in my mind. My dark horse for #2 though, is Transference- a record a hell of a lot better than the internet gave them credit for. Then I would go Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Gimme Fiction, and Girls Can Tell

I am definitely looking forward to this album. I thought his debut was a bit self indulgent (didn’t care too much for the arrangements and vocal effects), but Retrograde is a really good straightforward pop song and this one is a banger straight out of a boiler room set. This guy is talented for sure.

I love the oriental vibes.

“On Blue Mountain” is like a mix of The Rolling Stone’s “Under My Thumb” and Elvis’ “Suspicious Minds”

So yeah, this band rules.
