No ‘Home’ and ‘North American Scum’ at #4??? Really?
3 years ago when Ghost released their first album, they were every critics favourite satanic hard rock band making pop tunes with hooks that no one ever heard of. Now, all of a sudden, they’ve made a good album which keeps to the winning formula on the first while developing the sound just enough to give you something more and practically every critic is turning on them! Maybe it’s because now they’re a satanic hard rock band making pop tunes with hooks that everyone has now heard of!
The hipster ‘I knew it before it was big’ attitude in metal is becoming an epidemic.
Regardless of the order of the albums, I’m just happy this articles exists. I’ve revisited At Dawn after what’s been way too long and it still sounds great. Great work Stereogum.

Eh what? The relevance of The Knife reference was merely because it is my favourite album at the moment and my lack of love for this KV album had sent me back into its loving arms.
After listening to this I have to say the description of Vile from the first paragraph suits this album best, “…bumbled his way through a bunch of songs that never seemed to end.”
I never liked Kurt Vile and after all the praise I thought he had turned a corner but this is painful, I’ll be off listening to Shaking The Habitual while you downvote the shit outta this.
