2008 Juno Award Nominations

2008 Juno Award Nominations

And Feist is clearing off mantle space for the hardware. It's pretty much the Leslie and Avril Lavigne show in the just announced nomination list, although we are pulling hard for Wintersleep in the Best New Artist category. Our source for the info is the awesomely domain-named canada.com. (Wherever else would you go for your Juno news?)

Stone Temple Pilots Reuniting 5/17?

Stone Temple Pilots Reuniting 5/17?

"According to HardDrive Radio, the reunited STONE TEMPLE PILOTS will perform at the Rock on the Range on May 17 in Columbus, Ohio." Slash told Billboard the reunion was on, so it's not the if that's news-y, it's the when. Of course, first they'll have to play a couple rounds of Where's Weiland.

The Raveonettes, Dntel Fall Into The GAP

The Raveonettes, Dntel Fall Into The GAP

Gap is launching an online advertising campaign featuring music by the Raveonettes, Dntel, Swizz Beatz, the Blakes and Marie Digby, with each writing a song inspired by a particular color, "in the hopes of stirring up some viral music video mojo among its younger customers." We'll watch for the Raveonettes and Jimmy Tamborello, but if you really want a video to go viral these days you need Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Ed from Live. Even will.i.am knows that.

New Love Is All Stuff Streaming

New Love Is All Stuff Streaming

P4K points the way to some new rough stuff streaming over at Love Is All's MySpace, from the follow-up to Nine Times That Same Song, entitled A Hundred Things That Keep Me Up At Night. There's an untitled (as yet) one, and "New Beginnings (rough)," neither of which seem to be what they were working on when they were being cute in the studio last year. Pretty sure "New Beginnings" has been in their set for awhile now, very sure it bodes well for the new record.

New Heidi Montag Video - "Higher"

Budget was $15,025. $15K for the new breasts and nose, $25 for the bikini. Zing! Seriously, we think this video's been done before.

New Presidents Of The United States Of America -

New Presidents Of The United States Of America - "Mixed Up S.O.B."

Since it's a political sort of day, how about some new music from POTUSA? You loved them for their "Lump" "Peaches" "Kitty" and probably not for much after that, but the band's been cranking 'em out off and on for the past decade and are releasing These Are The Good Times People this March. "Mixed Up S.O.B." is the first single, streaming at MySpace. Probably won't be inspiring "Weird Al" satire ala "Gump" but then, very little could.

The Mountain Goats Write A Super Tuesday Song

The Mountain Goats Write A Super Tuesday Song

Over 80% of primary season's delegates are up for grabs tomorrow. You know how a random sample of random celebs want you to vote. Now it's John Darnielle's turn to plug for the electoral process, with a song custom tailored to tomorrow's big voting day, as solicited by public radio show Weekend America. It's a piano ballad called "Down To The Ark," and while it won't tell you how to vote, it will hint that he thinks you should. Even if he's sort of skeptical of campaigning tactics ("And several post-born babies learned the hard way: Vampires only kiss you if they've sharpened up their fangs").

As for that little map, since you're wondering: the states in purple are those where elections are being held by both parties tomorrow. Super! Thanks for asking.

New Janet Jackson -

New Janet Jackson - "Rock With U" & "LUV"

You can hear two new tunes from Miss Jackson's forthcoming Discipline by heading to her site and clicking on 'Jukebox.' "Rock With U"'s spelled like Prince but carries an updated early '80s disco/dance-pop sheen, while "LUV" sounds more like the now, with R. Kelly cadences and still-questionable spelling. But if it's vocals filtered beyond the point of recognition and dimestore intergalactic sexiness you're after, U won't beat this. Ever.

New Guillemots -

New Guillemots - "Kriss Kross"

Guillemots will make ya ... hit this link and fork over your email addy for a free MP3 of the adventurously titled "Kriss Kross," from the band's forthcoming album Red. The troupe's over-the-top pop won us over a couple years ago, for its emotion and its ambition and its lack of disposable '90s hip hop references (still safe here: note the two "s"s in "Kriss"), so new stuff is good news. This tune, which isn't the first single (that'd be "Get Over It," streaming for a snip at MySpace), starts with some menacing fuzz bass, sirens, and a modal, violin-and-typewriter (both of which they play at shows, btw) melody -- like a criminal drama theme song, almost -- before breaking into Fyfe Dangerfield's trademark exuberance. It krisses and krosses from dark to light, and although it settles into a sort of mundane, major-keyed ride out, it's a satisfying LP peek.

Les Savy Fav Strip Their Way Through

Les Savy Fav Strip Their Way Through "Patty Lee" On Conan

Last night manic street punkers Les Savy Fav got their second big break, bringing the "Patty Lee" dance party to Conan's house. Tim starts as a superhero, but you get a sense of where things are headed when the cape comes off and the hips start gyrating a bit. The sliced bird head, that's still a little wtf. Bonusly, you'll find even more reasons to think Tim Harrington is the coolest man alive: He picks up after himself. What a great guest.

Conan giving a post-performance bow is a sign that they should be back in the future. That shit was deadly squire.

Lewis & Clarke Are Daytrotters

Lewis & Clarke Are Daytrotters

Jack of all trades mountain man Lou Rogai and Rachels et al cellist Eve Miller lay down lovely, woodsy post-folk expansiveness at camp Daytrotter. Then Lou ponders the different types of baby seats earth fathers use on their bikes.

Who Owns A Promo Record?

Who Owns A Promo Record?

Yes, it's an industry article talking about leaks. Using the unintentional leak of Beirut's last one by the Burning Man-bound journo Erik Davis. Again. But this one poses an interesting issue: "At no point do we as music writers enter into anything like a contractual relationship with labels regarding promos," Davis said. "We make no formal agreements with them about the material they send us. If it's my property, I can dispose of it as I see fit, within the boundaries of other laws."

There's an analysis of the First Sale Doctrine and the efficacy of watermarking, but the most interesting bit comes down to the proper function, use, and resalability of those goodies that clog up music writers' inboxes. Either that, or the fact that Erik Davis is going down in history as "that Burning Man/Beirut guy."

Rare Beck Error Card MINT

Rare Beck Error Card MINT

From the PR folks working that terrific Odelay reissue we never got a chance to mention:

The first pressing of the recent Odelay Deluxe Reissue was found to have gone out with unproofed lyrics that were taken from a lyrics website as place holders for layout purposes. Beck apologizes for this unfortunate oversight and is making arrangements for the corrected lyrics to be available gratis via Beck.com. Subsequent pressings of the Odelay Deluxe will also include the corrected lyrics.
Internets are so unreliable. We've been singing the wrong words to "New Pollution" for a dozen years, though ... Why stop now?

Jammin' On The One

Jammin' On The One

Bill Cosby -- "old, unfunny, and, quite possibly, mentally ill" -- has a rap album coming out. It's called State of Emergency. Funny, 'cause we thought Cosby was generally against rap. Or maybe he's just against Ebonics. Reportedly, "[it] will not contain any profane language, nor will it offer any denigrating comments towards women." And, presumably, it won't contain a Clipse cameo. Who is the audience for this?
